  • Gauging Interest for a Homebrew Setting

    The Gem is Perfection.

    As a crystal grows,
    so must we all.

    The Gem scatters light
    in infinte hues.
    The Spectrum shares One source.

    As form follows function
    so must we serve function
    and perfect all forms,
    as the Immaculate wills.

    - Fractal prayer

    Setting:

    Gemma Mundi, once called Earth.

It's the year 11019 of the Spectrum Calendar, and many millennia since the Order of Fractal Perfection rose to power.

Their god, The Immaculate Gem, called the Shardmother by some, is power made manifest.

The power of the Immaculate is everywhere. Crystals filled with pure energy and potential grow like wildflowers. Creatures made of living crystal live alongside those of flesh and bone, and are by turns a natural hazard and a resource to be harvested.

Technology and magic exists side by side, blending into each other until one and the same. Cybernetics and psychics, magic, monsters and mechas.

The night is ruled by vampires and creatures of the dark.

The wild by shapeshifters and beasts beyond description.

The fringes of society by those who wield forbidden magics.

The world is ruled by The Order.

    Who Will Rule You?
    __________________________

    Major setting factions:

The Order of Fractal Perfection - A transhuman empire that spans the globe. Ruling through power and populism, they accept all sentient beings, provided they serve the Order. Service can mean glory to some, and indentured servitude to others.

The Arma Noctis - A confederation of the Undead, from differing lineages, existing in defiance of the Immaculate Code. Unliving beings who serve the Order are considered Anathema to them.

The Flux Initiative - A group of pseudo revolutionaries that push against the control imposed by the Immaculate Code and the Order. Considered terrorists by the Order and general public, membership is largely kept secret. The Order inspects its personnel often for hidden Flux agents. Ironically, like the Order itself, the Initiative welcomes most sentient beings of like mind.

The Army of 10,000 Dragons - A coalition of Were-Creatures, magic users and strange sentient beasts who revere the Shardmother, yet reject the Order as power-mad despots who pervert the worship of their god. Often treated as rogues, or as simple beasts by the Order, the Army is mysterious in its activities, and it's leader, if one exists at all, remains a secret. The Army, whose worship of the Shardmother emphasizes life and growth, often clash violently with the Arma Noctis

    Sub-factions:

    The Order of Fractal Perfection

The Shining - The bureaucratic wing of the Order. Judges, Priests, public security officers and high ranking military minds comprise the Shining Facet.

The Dyad - The most common Facet for average members of the Order. Largely treated as the laity, the Dyad make up most of the citizenry under control of the Order.

The Adamant - The fighting force of the Order's military. The Adamant Facet have conquered nations, ended wars and redefined global military power.

The Solid - The Order's Facet for infrastructure and resource management. Since the abolition of currency by the Order, the Solid have acted as everything from city planners to agricultural experts.

Liquid Crystal - The Facet of Change. Liquid Crystal members focus on Refining themselves and others, redesigning and shifting both physical form and function in service to the greater will of the Order. Crystals grow and change, as is the will of the Shardmother.

Blades of The Immaculate - The elite force of assassins, executioners and living weapons dedicated to "purifying" the enemies of the Order.

    Arma Noctis

The House of Rubies - A collection of vampiric lineages obsessed with undead supremacy. Their doctrine is the core of the Arma Noctis.

The House of Shadow - A House of vampiric lineages who act as spies, lorekeepers and assassins for the Arma Noctis. Often used as sleeper agents hidden among the Order.

The House of Prisms - A semi-heretical House of vampiric mystics, tricksters and magicians who worship darker aspects of the Shardmother in search of greater "truths".

The House of Beasts - The field operatives and more feral members of the Arma Noctis. Their control over animal life, and of their own forms, is nearly unrivaled among the Undead. A fair few lineages belong to this House, and their strength is often in their diversity as much as their dominion over beasts both living and dead.

The House of Rising - An alliance of the Risen Dead, loyal to the Arma Noctis, but vocal in their disagreement with certain bits of the common doctrine. Drinkers of breath and emotion as much as blood, the House of Rising raises less enmity between themselves and other factions than most Houses.

    Flux Initiative

Code Cells - Information brokers, spies, moles and cryptics, Code Cells are the secret batteries that power the Initiative.

Shifting Cells - Facilitators, illegal merchants, envoys, messengers and more. Shifting Cells wear many hats, all of them contraband.

Stem Cells - The main functionary Cells of the Initiative. Stems recruit, disseminate and support. Above all, they keep fighting, even if in secret. Most Flux members were part of a Stem Cell at one point, if they aren't still, many moving toward more specialized Cells after proving loyalty in their membership.

    10,000 Dragons

The Legion of Hidden Dragons - Keepers of Lore, hoarders of treasures both material and ephemeral. Hidden Dragons are fierce defenders, when they can be found, which is rare indeed.

The Legion of Dragon Blossoms - The passive defense forces of the wild lands. Chrysform and fleshly life are held as equally sacred to them, and Harvesters or hunters seeking Chrysform prey are sometimes met with the fierce judgement of these wild children of the Shardmother.

The Legion of Dragon's Breath - The offensive force of the 10,000. The Dragons Breath are warriors, powerhouses of destruction, and masters of asymmetrical warfare dedicated to eliminating the Shardmother's enemies.

20th Anniversary World of Darkness mechanics would be the standard, with bits from previous editions to flesh things out. Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Mage: The Ascension would be the primary player splats.
Sorcerers, Numina users, Bygones, Kuei-Jin/Risen, and the Changing Breeds are all possible as well, within reason, and all characters are subject to final approval by the ST.

Note: Gender and sexuality are treated differently on Gemma Mundi than rl Earth. The cis-heteronormative is almost gone. Transgender, non-binary and gay people of all kinds live openly and without issue, mostly.

I say 'mostly' because of the Immaculate Code, the doctrine which the Order acts according to and enforces. Are you pansexual/bi and non-binary/agender? You might be "encouraged" to live as a straight/gay man/woman. Are you cisgender/trans? The Order might determine you should transition/detransition, "in the interest of Fractal Utility and Perfection".

Bodily autonomy is a privilege, not a right, in the Order. The determination is made by The Shining, according to the Code's Doctrine of Perfection. Many Initiative members have joined in simple defiance of this Doctrine.

Wow, I've gotta say, this setting sounds really interesting. I'd love to play a werewolf in it. Here's hoping more people take note.

I'm glad you find it interesting! I'm very open to potential players, so feel free to message me for more information or, better yet, for a link to the setting as it's being built on Discord.

Interesting, so is this an alternate history of Earth?

            We I mean Future?

So it’s still say on a planet?

It is a time for great deeds!

It's very much a future Earth, with an alternate/divergent history. Technology and magic make exploring the universe an option, but the primary setting is the future Earth, called Gemna Mundi for longer than many inhabitants could ever guess.

Thanks for asking, Eldagusto! Great question.

Feel free to keep the questions and comments coming. Setting still under construction.

Ask for the Discord link to watch this being built and participate yourself!
