Luck isn't on Strife's side. Even with Fate guiding his hands to the most likely places, he finds nothing hidden. The chanting and singing continues outside.

How many shadows should be moving on the floor? There's five of you, right?

Unbound, hopelessly tracing the stone, nearly trips as his foot catches something cut into the floor. Everyone feels something like a chime in their Periphery- magic was at play just now.

One of the stone slabs fits loosely into the floor, and it slides easily along a carved track once you know where to look. A stroke of luck from Khvarenah's magic. Unbound, and anyone who follows him, climbs down into the passageway. The priests will certainly notice the open trapdoor if one of them enters the archive. Does someone stay outside to stand guard? Urbi could, although she doesn't have thumbs to reopen the trapdoor if you close it. She cautions you: "Be very careful. You're entering a dangerous situation, even with magic to hide you."

The passageway is mud brick walls and a packed earth floor, not the fine stone of the temple. Maybe it wasn't included in the floorplan. It's cold as soon as you drop down into it, and cramped- you almost need to crouch. The only light is a hazy square from the open tile. From where you stand, it looks like the passage goes westward about 15 yards before opening up into a larger space.

Yep and yep. +1 AB for Charmed, 11 in the pot.

Woland roll a Clash of Wills with Mind, +1 for your spell's Duration. Something is pressing up against your Incognito Presence on the group.

Everyone, be sure to state whether you're in the passageway or outside. There's still a -2 Poor Light penalty in the archive, which increases to -3 in the passageway.

Strife: Death Scribe of Anpu - The Hand of Death – His Lords Warrior
Path: Moros | Darshanas: Vajrastra | Great Cult: Weret-Hekau
Mage Sight: Peripheral | Spells Controlled (0/3): | Conditions: Charmed, Informed, Inspired.
      Spells Cast On Him:
      Health: LOOOOOOO | Willpower: 5/6 | Hekau: 9/12 (3)

Gear: Crafting Gear (+2), Mace (Dedicated Magic Tool), 4 Javelins (In back sheath), Medical Supplies
      Death Sacraments, Fate Sacraments.

As they are discussing who will stay in the room Strife will cast a spell that will wedge the door shut. When moving back to the group he will count the shadows out of habit.

If he sees and extra shadow he will address it

Raising his hands in a none threatening manner "Looks like we will not need to go into the tunnel after all, as the one we are searching for is here. Show yourself as we will not harm you as long as you mean us no harm. Can someone deaden the sound so that we may talk without alerting the priests." he will wait for them to reveal himself.

OR if there is no extra shadow he will continue.

"Urbi you go with them I can stay up here as cloak the entrance or bar them from entering this room for a while. I can solidify the shadows in this area around the door and cause it to jam the door shut. or simply deepen the shadows in this room to conceal the trap door. But you all need to go so that I can cast the spell."

As the others disappear beneath he will continue to look around the room.

Rolling perception to see count the shadows on the floor I will use the Last application of Quantum Flux to negate the low light condition penalties.

      Perception: 5d10h8 3 = Success

Rote Imago: Shadow Crafting (Death •••)
      Dice Pool: 3 (Gnosis) + 3 (Arcane) +1 (Yantras) = 7 dice pool.
Reaches: Free Reaches: 3, Reaches used: 3 (1 to move to instant casting, 1 to change spell to Advanced Duration, 1 to change spell to Advanced Scale.)
Yantras used: (Dedicated Magic Tool: Ornate Mace, -2 Paradox, +1 Path Tool).

      Results: Shadow Craft: 7d10h8 3 = Success
Hekau Cost: X (X Reduce Nemesis dice, 1 Spell Requirements, 1 Improvised Spell)
      Willpower Cost: X

      Ending Spell Factors:
      Potency: 1
      Duration: 1 week (Primary)
      Scale: 1 large wedge
      Range: Touch
      Casting Time: 1 turn.
Desired Effect: use the shadows near the door to form a wedge and wedge the door shut from the inside. Since the shadow form to the object before solidifying the bottom of the wedge is form fitting to the floor and should match the texture creating a especially stationary wedge. The wedge has a durability of 2.

        Unbound: Greek Binder of Daevas
Mage Sight: Peripheral | Conditions: Informed| Spells: none
        Health: OOOOOOO | Willpower: 8/8 | Mana: 9/12
Unbound feels the pressure on his spell, a gut-wrenching sensation of being looked at by someone... or something. Focusing every effort on upholding the magic, he hopes that it will be enough, and they will be able to continue unnoticed.

Clash of Wills. Spending a point of Willpower to boost the pool by +3. Unless it's evident that there is something in the shadows and that something sees them, Unbound will hush Strife, not wanting to take any chances.

IF there is a person looking at them and the Incognito Presence fails,he, too, adresses the being with a harsh tone: "Come out, Shadow. We have business to discuss." As he does this, helays his right hand on the hilt of his sword, slowly and steadily to not attract attention. Ifpossible without alerting the Shadow, he will also try to close in on it,one step at a time.

IF however there is no Shadow or it looks past them, Unbound nods to Strife and descends underground, as first in the line. Just to be sure, with a small gesture he conjures some simple magic on everyone in the group (including Strife), but the effect is staggering - he immediately sees, hears and smells everything around him, like painted on a canvas, and presumes everyone else does too.

Casting The Outward and Inward Eye
Ritual, Touch, Advanced Duration (an hour), Advanced Scale (5 subjects), Standard Potency
        Reach: 2 free, 0 over
Factors: Duration (primary) -0, Potency -0, Scale -0
        Yantras: High Speech +2, Order Tool +1, Sacrament +1 = 4
Nemesis: 0 from Reach, 0 from other sources, -0 from Mana/Tool.
        Spellcasting: Gnosis 3 + Arche 2 + Yantras 4 = 9 Casting roll.

It was just a trick of the light in the archive. When Strife looks more closely, he realizes there's no one up here but the sorcerers and Urbi, who is sitting on the floor listening carefully to the action below. It's probably wise to stand guard. With the door stuck shut with solid shadow, you'll have warning at least.

Unbound, and anyone else down in the tunnel, isn't so lucky. The Shadows have supernaturally keen senses in their own lair, even when Ra is ascendant and night is ending.

Everyone feels the cold chill of magic in their Periphery. Hands rest on hilts. A few paces down the tunnel from Unbound, the darkness ripples like the wake of a ship- and now there is a young man, half-starved, standing on the ceiling and looking up at you from his head hanging down at the floor. His eyes shine like a cat's.

"No further." He sounds no older than a boy, but as confident as a man. Thin and bony and so hungry. The darkness that cloaks him flows when he speaks. This dark tunnel feels like standing in a shallow stream.

"The master sleeps. Why are you here?"

(The voice of Cruelty lurks in Unbound's ear: "weak. kill this one.")

Unbound's demon offers him a chance to satisfy his Vice, as per his first Attainment. +1 bonus Willpower above your normal limit (and Guilty) if you accept, take Inspired (Negotiating) if you resist.

Any spells to affect the lowercase-s shadows down in the tunnel with magic require a Clash using Gnosis+Death.

Remember you can always use Mage Sight!

            Imhotep, scribe-physician of Anubis
Sorcerous Sight: Peripheral | Conditions: Charmed, Informed, Steadfast(?), Team Player, Dead Certain | Spells: none
            Health: OOOOOOO | Willpower: 5/6 | Hekau: 6/11 (2)
Gear: Writing utensils [Academics, Enigmas] (+1), Matter & Life Sacraments

            Urbi, emissary of Anubis (???)
            Conditions: Familiar, Resonant, Open, Fettered
            Corpus: OOOOOO | Health: OOOOOO | Willpower: 8/8 | Essence: 6/15

Imhotep opens his sight to the magical energies of this place and its inhabitants, pauses, then turns his attention to mundane sences.

"We are travellers to the Red Land, oh Shadow, coming to ask your master if he's willing to help guard our caravan - or to lend your help in guarding it, as the matter stands. If any of you demand a payment, I'm ready to part with as much of my blood as you will need."

He feels his limbs stiffen as he wills hekau out of his flesh.

Activating Mage Sight (Death, Life), taking a look to ascertain the youth'es (?) nature, then deactivating again.

Making a polite impression: Pre 2 + Socialize 2 (or is it Persuasion? no difference anyway) + WP 3 = 7d10h8 1 resolving Informed

Scouring Pattern for -1 Dex, gaining 3 Hekau.

For a second, Unbound was actually inclined to put this creature out of its misery and grasped the hilt of his weapon a little tighter. Imhotep's voice, however, pulled him out of Cruelty's influence.

"To hell with you. I don't take orders from you" Only after he finished the sentence did he realize that his lips were moving. Nobody have seen it, though - the pitch-black darkness had its uses, after all.

"This is no Shadow, merely a grain of sand on its sandals. We can negotiate a price, but only after you prove you are actually worth all those stories. So lead us to this 'master' of yours, lest you will be gutted like a pig!" Unbound was enraged at this man's impertinence, but also more than a little unnerved by the fact that he was able to sneak up on them like that.

Imhotep sees truly. His enhanced senses alone can't overcome how dark this place is, but he picks some details out in the light of the trapdoor.

With Life, he sees that the only living things in this place are the sorcerers. Points of warm, pulsing light in the darkness.

With Death, he recognizes the curse of those who walk after death, sometimes called "the ones who can't stop." This wretched creature has no soul, but the shattered remains of his sheut have clotted and spread to take its place. The shadows that surround this thing are moving like flowing blood. There is an animating intelligence behind the darkness circling their feet. The shadows are part of him. His corpse cannot contain his sheut.

There's a separate phenomenon here. He can't see it clearly, but all along the walls and deeper down the tunnel, he feels something heavy pulling down into the earth. It's akin to the Anchors that keep a ghost from passing on, but different in kind. As a Moros, he sees Death and Matter at once, and he sees that the heaviest points are marked by carved notches.

The Shadow listens to Imhotep's appeal, possibly with interest, but his face doesn't react like a human's would. But apparently there's enough humanity there to rise to Unbound's taunt.

                "No, Greek."

Everyone feels magic in their Periphery. Down in the tunnel, the Shadow bends backward and clutches the ceiling like a spider as the shaft of light grows as thin and faint as a pinhole. You can see nothing, but you feel the darkness itself become cold and heavy, like thick fog. Its voice is not coming from anywhere in particular.

"The master lies in henet, as he has since your soldiers came to Hibis. And yet, true to his word, the black blood on the sphinx is still fresh. Remember, weret-hekau, that we are as faithful as Sutekh even in death. We can bargain if you come as guests, but not as burglars."

"We know the Red Land well. The western desert is the road to Duat, and we have wandered back and forth between the worlds with Sutekh's blessing. We can stand on your bow, chosen of Djehuty, and spear Apep when he swims close. If you know your destination, we can help you reach it and return to the world of life."

After some preliminary negotiation, he offers these terms:
                • Greater Request: Retainer 3 for the Term. Will assist in combat and act as secondary actor in travel rolls.
                • 2 Medial Costs: Someone in the caravan must offer blood freely at the end of each night, 2 Lethal damage. Each sorcerer must maintain a blessing on the Shadow for the Term.
                • Medial Term: You must return to Hibis by Day 28, the end of the Aquarius cycle.
                • Medial Forfeiture: If you do not meet the terms, the Shadow will capture one of the caravan for sufficient blood as they return to Hibis alone.

Instead of Poor Light, everyone in the tunnel has Blinded (-5 to rolls requiring vision, including Scrutiny/Revelation.)

The Death/Matter mystery is Opacity 3. Poor vision penalties apply to Scrutiny/Revelation.

With his x-success, Imhotep has an insight into negotiation: you could reduce the blood cost to 1 Lethal damage per night if one of you casts an appealing permanent spell on the Shadow before leaving for the Red Land, and a second permanent spell when you return.

Shadow and death, this tunnel fairly reeked of miscreation. Yet was it not a miscreated star that now carved its bleeding path through his fate?

The terms of the bargain are somewhat worrying when communicated though. Speaking to his companions, though he assumed anything he said would be overheard, and glancing down the tunnel from time to time he said,

"It may be my magic would not be wanted given what it may bring forth. Should it be to this 'master' to judge, or shall we make our own best offer?"

"Offer what you will, and we will weigh it against a feather. But a gravely poisoned blessing would be a violation of terms."

Time shows Khvarenah what is about to happen. If he keeps his Sight open, he can catch any tricks or surprise attacks a moment before they happen.

Space gives him an idea of the dimensions of this place, despite the darkness. This low tunnel is about 20 yards long, and opens up into a wide, deep square chamber directly beneath the holy sanctuary of the temple proper.

The "heavy" carvings that Imhotep observed are visible under Fate as well, but only on the walls of the square chamber ahead. Some faded boon animates them, like a web of lines drawn with chalk that has nearly eroded with time and neglect. The blessing is magic, resembling the Ruling practice of Fate, but not the kind that sorcerers like you practice. It has been here for centuries, since the Hibis temple was constructed, surely. The only thing close to a maker's signature is the vague fluttering suggestion of a golden falcon, the details long since lost to history.

He also didn't like the offer made by thestranger. That is a lot of blood, and he'd rather not have some undead monster sucking it from his (or anyone else's) neck. To grease the negotiation he pierced the man's brain for some personal details, hoping this will help push the right buttons. Aware that these... things are listening to them he crushed some dried herbs in his hand and made a circle out of them, inside of which it'd be possible for the group to talk without audible words.

Khvarenah peers into the immediate future. Offering these dark creatures a Time working in place of a longer blessing (from him) would lead to good things. Of course, it's anyone's guess whether they would like the results. People have complicated relationships with diviners.

Unbound opens his true eyes. Cruelty lurks in his Mind's eye, a mote behind his brow, chastised for now. He can't see the whole area clearly, but the only waking mind he senses besides the three sorcerers is the lone Shadow, which is mere inches away. Nothing else, not even dreamers.

With Space, he sees the same information Khvarenah saw.

With Spirit, he sees that the tunnel is Resonant with darkness itself in a way that mundane shadowy places are not. It doesn't look like any spirits have come from their hidden places, though.

He draws a circle of sage. The Shadow speaks. "Why do you ward yourself, Greek? Do you think we cannot see you in the dark? Why do you come through our door and insult our hospitality? Guests have nothing to fear from us, only thieves."

His flowing mind does not cross the circle. And hearing his voice is enough to sense and read his psyche.

He thirsts. Pervading everything else, you feel a hunger deeper than anything you've ever felt, even the drive for ever-greater Gnosis. All his thoughts and actions are ultimately driven by bloodthirst, even if it's delayed. His reason is enslaved to his appetite. He must feed.

The Shadow isn't good with people (Social tertiary, 6 dots), but he thinks deeply (Mental primary, 9 dots). He is Cautious to a fault, but prone to Zealous outbursts for his gods and masters.

He is dearly devoted to his master. He has been in henet for years now, far too long. He urgently seeks a way to lift the mysterious curse laid on his master.

He has heard rumors of the sha, beast of his patron god Sutekh/Set, seen in the desert lately. He considers it a sign and wants one brought back to lift the curse. In pursuit of this, he has mesmerized the priest Mitry to acquire one from a traveler.

Finally, he wants to hunt and kill some creature that bedevils him. Visions of a shadowy bird with a golden beak and eyes, something like the strigoi of Greek legend. Maybe Alexander's armies brought something with them.

I beg your pardon for my ignorance, but it seems to me that this place and your master are most ancient. It seems the way of things that much is often buried by the ever flowing sand of time. Is there any such thing you or your master have lost which you dearly seek to regain? I do not say that I can, but depending on the nature of such things I might be able to render assistance.

I may have something that is worth more than blood and sorcery to them, but the reaction may be excited. I will make the offer if you are ready for what might come.

I'm not yet skilled enough to close wounds and replenish lost blood with sorcery, but I can make our bodies recover from wounds faster.

                              What is it?

Imhotep recalls that henet refers to the mouth of the pelican, ferrying the dead safely to the afterlife. The undead do not sleep, they die, sometimes for months or years on end when they starve. But they always return, eventually, when fed blood again. They use henet to refer to this temporary death. This Shadow seems unusually worried, by Unbound's reading, like there's something abnormal about this time.

Khvarenah manages to stir the Shadow's dead heart. Blessing his Fate probably helped. The boy speaks slowly and carefully, wherever he's lurking:

"The master fell into henet when the Greeks came to Hibis. Among their soldiers were men who could see the blood that mortals ignore. Tomb robbers. They plundered the temple and stole our reliquary, even the Scroll, before we drove them off. Even the master was laid low in the fighting. Since that night, the master will not wake. If we recovered the Scroll of Going Forth By Night, perhaps Lord Sutekh could be persuaded to lift his curse."
