Smelling ozone, his weather senses honed from years at sea Ethan raises one of his punch knives into the air to receive the coming lightning strike. With an effort he wills a cable of flexing water to connect the steel of the raised blade to the blade in his other hand, which he drags through the pooling water he is leaving behind, hoping to send a nasty surprise to his pursuers. Grunting with the effort and the pain of the strike, he pushes through, forcing his muscles to move past their painful spasming, continuing to race down the street.

1 mote spent for the use of water aspect (8/13 personal, 21/31 peripheral, 3 of 13 personal are committed)

The lightning leaves Ethan slightly scorched.

Leaving the pooling water and hopefully any risk of shock behind him, Ethan spots BanFiz pass by one street over, and sees West Sparrow's magnificent slide down the temple ahead of him. Determined to keep pace with his allies and reunite with his fleeing soldiers he picks up the pace, pumping his legs ever harder, looking for the moment he can signal the Mizuchi to cover their retreat.

The gunslinger pauses atop the shrine, surveying for West Sparrow. Only a few heartbeats pass before he spots the fleeing Solar's glowing anima disappearing around the corner of a building, but West Sparrow doesn't waste them, growing the gap between himself and his pursuer. The gunslinger leaps after him, cutting across rooftops to narrow the distance.

Jolted back to semi-consciousness by the slide to the ground, the Exalt stirs on West Sparrow's shoulder. He digs into a pocket, pulling out a scrap of cloth, and presses it into the Solar's hand, "Don't . . . let . . . them . . . take . . . it." he wheezes.

The captain and the dandy set a dogged pace behind Ethan, pushing the Terrestrial hard with seeming inexhaustible endurance.

          Everyone gets 5 motes back.

The gunslinger is spending a mote on Monkey Leap Technique and 5 motes on the Athletics Excellency.
          Chasing: 15d10x7 3

The captain is spending 5 motes on the Athletics Excellency
          Chasing: 13d10x7 13

The brawler is spending 5 motes on the Athletics Excellency
          Chasing: 11d10x7 8

This puts the Abyssals at 38 successes to your 29 successes. They are gaining on you, primarily due to that huge number of 10s the captain just rolled.

BanFiz seeing Ethan is losing ground redoubles his effort. "I'm getting to old for this," he mutters to himself. He knows though if Ethan needs help he needs to be in position to give it.

West Sparrow instinctively takes the proffered scrap of cloth, quickly shoves it in a pocket, and just as quickly grabs the old man's hands again, before the Exalt slides off his back. Knowing that his glowing anima banner is going to make stealth difficult, if not impossible, West Sparrow opts for speed and directness instead, Pushing himself, he continues his sprint down the streets toward the docks, muttering to himself "I hope that captain character shows up soon; not much help to run to his ship if I can't pick it out from all the other ships...."
Dex 4 +Ath 3 + stunt 2 = 10 base dice. Spending 3 motes on lightening speed to get one auto success and to reroll 5s and 6s until they fail to appear. Still have Graceful Crane Stance turned on (as it lasts a whole scene) but I'm not going to pour any more motes into maintaining monkey leap technique. Running to the Docks, Still: 10d10x7 5 Reroll of 5s/6s for Running to the Docks, Still roll: 3d10x7 1 6 dice successes, plus the auto success, for a total of 7 successes.

Feet pounding pavement on the way down to the quayside, Ethan wished it didn't feel quite so familiar. He found the Mizuchi easily in the waters below, a shining beacon of gleaming metal with roaring guns speaking out against the invaders. His practiced eye could see his marines swiftly swimming across the open water and climbing back aboard. Moments after the first made it aboard, the ship adjusted gracefully and the Mizuchi's screws shifted water towards the docks.

Glancing back at the Abyssals closing the gap behind him, and knowing he was dead last of his own party of makeshift allies, he put his crew's tried and true plan into action.

"Look there!" Ethan bellowed back over his shoulder, pointing dramatically to the sea. "You've more than one ship missing or burning to the waterline thanks to my crew. Soon you may have no way off the island, and still you pursue a revered elder and well intentioned passerby?" Even as he ran, the Mizuchi's captain laughed uproariously, slapping his thighs, his banner anima growing brighter and brighter with each slap. "And my crew calls me crazy!"

Still running Ethan waves his glowing arms overhead, indicating the Abyssals behind him to the sharp eyes of his first mate. Even at this distance Ethan could practically hear the curses the man was sure to be spewing alongside orders to their crew.

4 presence, 3 manipulation, 2 stunt = 9 dice + spending 6 peripheral motes (burning aura) for 3 successes with Glowing Coal Radiance
                8/13 personal, 16/31 peripheral
                9d10x7+3 = 8

The gunslinger crisscrosses the street behind West Sparrow, leaping from rooftop to rooftop as he tries to get within range of the Solar. The two other Abyssals, feet pounding upon the cobblestones, continue their pursuit of Ethan, though the scowl upon the captain's features deepens as he mentions their lost ships.

Out in the harbor, however, things aren't going quite as well as Ethan portrayed them. Between the Mizuchi's fire and the pounding of the harbor cannon from the fort above, the enemy ships have taken losses, but most of the docked ships are ablaze and the fire is spreading to some of the waterfront buildings. As Ethan watches, a figure on the deck of one of the ships conjures shards of bone from thin air, which hurtle with great speed and force into the side of the Mizuchi, some embedding themselves into the jade-steel hull.

For those not counting, this is roll 3 of 6.

                  Everyone gets 5 motes back.

I forgot to take some dice off the gunslinger's roll last time, so I'll just take that off now. The gunslinger is going to spend another mote on Monkey Leap Technique and three motes on the Athletics Excellency.
                  Chasing: 11d10x7 9

The captain will spend 4 motes on the Athletics Excellency.
                  Chasing: 12d10x7 4

The brawler will spend 4 motes on the Athletics Excellency.
                  Chasing: 9d10x7 8

That puts the Abyssals at 59 successes to your 53 successes. I finally remembered to add in the successes from AJ's forgotten stunt dice, which helped make the Abyssals lead a little smaller.

Knowing the time for desperate action has come, Ethan churns his legs harder than he has in, well, days, but it still feels too hard. He yearns for the calming presence of the ocean around him and the Mizuchi's decks underfoot rather than the tough stone.

As he and the Mizuchi close, both drawing ever nearer the quay, he calls out his orders. The distance is great, but he trusts the sailors to hear them through the ongoing fight and stormy weather, as they have many times before. Regardless, he adds a little extra emphasis using the peculiar bond they share, their prey draws near.

                    "Open fire!"

3 motes (peripheral) for Feeding Frenzy Call (I'd argue it applies, I'm just asking for ranged support here. How many dice would I add? Or any? I rolled without)
                    2d10x7, plus reroll a 6: 0
                    10 personal

                    • Seeing the scene of carnage they have run to Banfiz thinks to himself. "This is starting to look like we may have made matters worse." Since they are close enough to the docks he begins to plan resuming his attack while he continues to race to the ship.

                      • West Sparrow watches as one of the ships fires up towards where he hopes his companions last were, or rather where the pursuers of his companions were. Taking the shot as evidence of Ethan's ownership, West continues running down the docks, heading toward where the ship looks like it is going to come to a stop.
Dex 4 +Ath 3 + stunt 2 = 10 base dice. Spending 3 motes on lightening speed to get one auto success and to reroll 5s and 6s until they fail to appear. Still have Graceful Crane Stance turned on (as it lasts a whole scene) Also spending 2 motes on Athletic excellency. Total dice is 12. More running to the docks: 12d10x7 8 Reroll of 5s and 6s: reroll of dice from last roll: 2d10x7 0 So 8 success plus the one auto success is 9 total successes.

                        • The Mizuchi cuts through the water, pivoting to bring a full broadside to bear. The dragon cannons roar, lances of fire streaming up into the city to wash across the streets behind Ethan. The Abyssals split up to avoid the barrage, crashing through buildings to use as cover, trying to keep up their pursuit.

The gunslinger cuts across the roof of a corner building, angling to get ahead of West Sparrow and cut off his escape.

Roll 4 of 6. Everyone gets 5 motes back.

The captain spends 5 motes on not getting blown up.
                          Chasing: 8d10x7 2

This puts the Abyssals at 70 successes to your 69 successes.

                          • Banfiz Is in awe of the flames he see's arching to the other street. Realizing he wont have time to aim takes a vial out of his pocket to throw when he next sees an opponent, Theres bound to be some fire he can throw it in. Just in case he sties a slow match to the vial.

                            • West Sparrow tightens his grip on the old man, and keeps his eyes on the rooftops. Spotting the gunslinger, West quickly decides the docks are not the best way to get to the ship. Straightening his back and rolling his shoulders, he changes his direction, aiming himself in the straight line that is the shortest distance between him and it, disregarding the minor inconvenience the lack of solid surfaces might provide. "Come on, old man, hold on just a little longer. Help is nearly within reach."

Still have Graceful Crane Stance turned on (as it lasts a whole scene). Also spending 3 motes on Feather Foot Style, to run across fluid surfaces--this charm is mute, so even though I'm spending 6 motes this turn, I'm not going to move up the anima banner ladder. Running across the bay toward the ship: 10d10x7 4 Reroll of 5/6s for running to the ship: 2d10x7 1 4+1+1 auto = 6 total success

                              • The warmth of the shots flying over his head is a familiar comfort to Ethan, and he settles into make the final sprint to the Mizuchi, trusting his privateers to cover him and his companions. He spares one last glance in the last direction he saw each of his companions, ready to help them to the relative safety of the ship across the water, though he suspects they are more than capable of making their way across the bay.
