Totally understand! Thanks so much for letting me know. Hope all has been well with you these past few years.

    • Kvitebjørn Kong Valemon Second Chances: I have officially opened up the game for recruitment again! If you know of anyone else who you think would like to join, please talk to them and ask them to consider submitting a character concept.

At your convenience, can the two of you please also post character ideas with the following information? And anyone else reading this who would like to submit a character, please provide this same information.

Concept: Summarize your character concept in one phrase or short sentence.
      Sympathetic Name:
      Shadow Name:
      Path:
      Order:
      Legacy:
(If you have one in mind)
      Virtue:
      Vice:

Background: Please provide a brief narrative summary of the character concept, taking into consideration how your background may fit into the greater Mysteries described in the introductory post in this thread. You can also include information about the character's Awakening.

KKV, you are welcome to change as little or as much about Lynx as you like, or you can even submit an entirely brand new character concept if you like.

I don't have a deadline for recruitment, it really depends on how many other people post here and the quality of their submissions. If you two can try to have something posted within the next few days, though, that will help me start to brainstorm some story hooks and Mysteries that might help us get the game started.

        • Legal Name: Hannah Kaczkowski

          Concept: Soccer Mom / Con-Woman

Background: Hannah came from a small town in Illinois and attended the University of Illinois, at Champlain. If she cheated her way through business school, well many of her classmates did the same. After graduation, she worked in a number of less than savory business ventures. Ironically, it wasn’t some scam that landed her in jail. Instead it was going legit. Hannah snagged a position at a drug company, only to find that they had hidden the addictive and dangerous nature of one of their blockbuster products. When Hannah tried to, anonymously, report the situation to the authorities she instead found herself fired and under investigation. Ultimately, she spent 18 months in a federal (minimum security) prison for lying to the FBI.

While awaiting trial, Hannah began working for a cultlike multi-level marketing firm – Pentacle Supply, actual a Silver Ladder front. Hannah’s awakening as a Mastigos formed a mystery play taking part at the same time as her release from prison.

Hannah is now back on the outside. While on the inside her husband (Mat) divorced her, getting custody of the couple’s two kids (Lucy, 10 and Max 8).

I've looked over Lynx a bit the last couple of days, and I'm still a little uncertain which direction to take Lynx. I might play up the spiritual aspect to complement Second Chances, so I'd like some feedback there. Am thinking one dot of Dream merit, and some changes to rotes and praxes. Virtue and vice are also currently undecided. Since we're officially starting at 2 gnosis now, I assume that also means we get 2 praxes?

Concept: Foreign exchange student and (probably) animist. (otherwise something something spiritual caretaker)
            Sympathetic Name: Oscar Dalberg.
            Shadow Name: Lynx
            Path: Thyrsus
            Order: Mysterium
            Legacy: Undecided
            Virtue: Passionate (subject to change)
            Vice: Gluttonous (subject to change)

Background: (short summary of original story, which may be altered be altered, but the gist is there) Born in Norway to ambitious parents; emotionally neglected during large parts of childhood; rebelled as a teenager by running from home, which triggered the beginning of his Mystery Play, a journey into the Primal Wild; however, retreated from the calling due to fear. Mystery Play lingered as Oscar's fear slowly turned to curiosity, and adopted spiritual practises in an attempt to reconnect, but it became an obsession that made him largely withdraw from society. One day, wanderlust struck, and he suggested studying abroad to his parents, who agreed on condition that he take the studies seriously. After applying to universities and colleges around the world, one stood out to him: a college near La Grange. When he landed in the US, his Mystery Play resumed in full force. He journeyed through the Primal Wild, this time without fear, and embraced it as he, once Oscar, now Lynx, arrived to his new home.

Links to greater mysteries: The fluctuating gauntlets of the Brookfield Zoo, and the Uratha and Hallows of the Bemis Woods are the two most natural links to the supernal points of interest in La Grange. From a more earthly perspective, the Rumors Nightclub is something Lynx is very curious about.

            • DrSteve - Interesting character concept, thanks for expressing interest in the game!

I have a few questions looking at the overall character sheet and the background.

              (1) What is Hannah's new relationship with her ex-husband and children now that she has Awakened? Do they still live in the Chicago metro area? Your aspirations suggest that she still sees her children, but I wasn't sure from your background what her new relationships might be with her former family. I also wonder if there is anything else that ties Hannah to Chicago specifically; did she move here after getting out of prison? Do you think she would have known about the Highstorms or other local Mysteries before moving here?

              (2) Regarding skills: I think these all make sense, except I'm thinking Persuasion 5 might be excessive considering the context. 5 dots in a skill implies "absolute mastery of the discipline" per the core book, and you also picked skills that overlapped with both rote and asset skills. You're going to be *the best* at these skills, but I might suggest moving some of your skills around to have a little more utility in other settings. Would it make sense to move Persuasion down to 4 and bump Empathy or Occupt up to 2, or putting 1 dot in Investigation?

              (3) Can you explain to me more about the rationale for Mystery Cult Initiation for an Awakened mage? I have not seen that for PCs except when the merit is being used as a substitute for Order Status for a Nameless Order. Since you have only the free starting dot in Silver Ladder status, unless I'm misunderstanding the MCI merit, the allocation you have picked paints the picture of a mage who is deeply invested as a subordinate member in a cult for Sleepers that is influenced behind the scenes by another théarch, but has not moved to being in a place of influence yet within that cult. I wonder if Mystery Cult Influence (p. 103) is a better option? Alternatively, I think having higher dots in Silver Ladder status could represent a great level of influence over an existing Mystery Cult run by the théarchs. Finally, can you explain your thoughts on how Astral Adept and Shadow Name fit into the Mystery Cult symbolism? I'm not opposed to these choices, but I'm wondering how they relate specifically to the cult involvement. On a related note, what type of symbolism do you think the Shadow Name of Morgana should hold, or what types of spells or Imagos do you think fall within its purview?

Well she is not going to send a goetia to eat her ex-husbands face in the middle of the night. When she went to prison, he divorced her, married a younger woman, took most of the assets and the kids. He's from a political family and is gearing up to run for office. Her shadow name is Morganna, the sorceress who actively worked to bring down Camelot.

The judge gave her some time with her kids but not much, probably one or two weekends a month. She hasn't seen them much and is trying to reconnect. It doesn't help that she's hearing that things out there might want to randomly kill her (no sanctum or safe place merit), so she's worried about being around the kids too much.

She lived in the Chicago area with her family before her arrest, one of the reasons that she's back. She knows about the mysteries that a sleeper would be aware of (kids disappearing) but I can't really see her knowing about the highstorms.

                (2) Regarding skills: I think these all make sense, except I'm thinking Persuasion 5 might be excessive considering the context. 5 dots in a skill implies "absolute mastery of the discipline" per the core book, and you also picked skills that overlapped with both rote and asset skills. Yeah, I was going to ask if could retcon Medicine for Investigation. What do you mean by Occupt? (Occult? Occupational Skill?). I'm not able to find the dot rating equivalents in the Mage 2nd Ed book. Is academics 1 highschool or is it an undergraduate degree? If I accidentally gave her an MBA, then it might be best to drop it a dot and move that dot into Occult.

In agreement about persuasion. It got bumped up a dot because of the mystery cult initiation, but persuasion 4, probably makes more sense for the chronicle (5 being about the level that you get out of jail and announce your run for Congress). Would Empathy or Socialize be the more useful skill to move a dot into?

                (3) Can you explain to me more about the rationale for Mystery Cult Initiation for an Awakened mage? I have not seen that for PCs except when the merit is being used as a substitute for Order Status for a Nameless Order. I'm not sure that mystery cult initiation 5 is still considered a subordinate role. Signs of Sorcery did have some mechanical incentive for a mage to use mystery cult initiation as it can be used as a Yantra (Level/2 rounded up) but that's a bit cheesy for what is already a powerful merit. [Edit - on the other hand, Morgana getting a Yantra bonus for breing a priestess of Avalon. . . ] (Also see how Ars Magica handles Mystery Cults).

That said, I kind of like the idea of somebody that just awakened two weeks ago being in a cult run by another théarch. One of the issues is how to get a dot of striking looks onto the character sheet (part of the riff on suburbia). How about dropping Alternative Identity 1 for Striking Looks 1 [edit - some kind of hedge magic glamour] and swapping out Shadow Name 3 for Resources 2, Mentor 1 as the Mystery Cult 5 benefit. I'm also swapping the * benefit for an Occult specialty in astral realms, making the group more supernatural focused (the skill dot probably needs to remain in persuasion, it is a MLM cult after all). [Edit - changed the name of the group to Avalon Supply to go all in on the Arthurian theme.] That gives us an MLM selling cosmetics and yoga mats [and Renfest supplies] where some of the marketing hype actually brings participants closer to awakening -- basically playing on the theme of consumerism in suburbia.

At some point during play Mystery Cult Initiation can be swapped for Mystery Cult Influence (she'll take over the cult for the other (théarch). (Astral Adept can be used by both awakened and sleepers so it fits in with the idea of cult who's practices actually work). Shadow name becomes a non-mystery cult merit. But um, lets work out in the Signs of Sorcery Investiture Yantra is going to apply. It may be a bit cheesy, but there is a balancing drawback of requiring more involvement than mystery cult influence.

Morgan(n)a is one of the most complicated characters in Arthurian lore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_le_Fay for a Mastigos the name would be some take on a Renaissance-era witch with Arthurian overtones.

In some stories, Mogranna is supposed to have learned magic from Merlin so skill enhancing magic like Enhance Skill would be covered (as would some applications of the time spell that allows the creation of a temporary background). The association with second sight probably covers all Unveiling spells, but at the least should cover Pierce Deception (as well as the one dot spirit and death sight spells). The association with Morgana the Lady of the Lake, and the fact that Excalibur was forged on Avalon in the earliest stories, means that the Prime based crafting abilities should be included (probably all of them as long as they can be done with a witchy flavor).

For Mind magic, a couple of things are obvious. Mind based illusions, mind reading / manipulation, Goetia (at least when featuring either Faeries or Demons) and stat-boosting (numerous stories of various potions). Not covered would be psychic blast and other mental attacks as well as puppet master type spells (don't really appear in Arthurian literature).

For Space it would include basically all the sympathetic magic spells, scrying, dowsing (locate object), wards and effects meant to release physical bonds (such as removing chains or oppening cells) but not the teleportation or extra deminsional spaces.

Now if you wanted to make the situation really twisted - have her ex be a werewofl pack leader. Now you have Arthur and his knights in a complicated relationship with Morgana.

                • Keeping with the Arthurian theme, since her mentor is only *, how about an Obrimos with a shadow name of Vivian (another name for the Lady of the Lake). Gnosis 4, Forces 4, Prime 3, Mind 3, Spirit 2 (many of her Goetia are Angels to Morgana's demons). Probably similarish stats to Morgana but Prs 3, Mnp 2 (so an Obrimos who tries to get things done with force of personality where Morgana is more manipulative). Maybe with Expression 4, Persuasion 3 and Subterfuge 3. She's no slouch in the social department, but Morgana is both slightly better and more professional. The mentor/student relationship is not always one way.

Edit- Actually after thinking about it over night, I"m going to move the bonus skill dot from the mystery cult from Persuasion into Occult and pull a dot from somewhere else to keep persuasion at 4. That's a bit different from a frightened soccer mom who suddenly discovered the supernal but gives somebody who had minimal understanding of the occult (occult 1) ;and who's scared as her life keeps betting more bizarre (occult dots from mystery cult initiation and awakening but not from an organic buy).

I love these additions to the background. Thanks for taking the time to flesh this out. I think they offer a deeper, richer perspective on Hannah/Morganna's personality and history.

As far as the local setting goes, Sleepers would not know anything about the supernatural components of the Highstorm, but in my Awakened Chicago, Sleepers are aware of the very unusual weather patterns and have basically just grown accustomed to "freak weather" events. Most of them probably just take it in stride or even take pride in their ability to live in a city with such weird phenomenon. Their "other" mentality for out-of-towners and tourists is likely accentuated compared to the real world. I imagine that Sleeper cults regarding the weather are particularly common.

Yeah, I was going to ask if could retcon Medicine for Investigation. What do you mean by Occupt? (Occult? Occupational Skill?). I meant Occult, sorry about that. Per Mage p. 208, "Skills with a single dot reflect a cursory training. Two dots is sufficient for professional use. Three is a high level of competency. Four is outstanding, and five is absolute mastery of the discipline." See p. 31 of the Chronicles of Darkness book for additional guidelines about Academics, as well as comments on the fact that someone with no degree but advanced self-training would have higher dots, whereas someone with an advanced degree but little interest in topics outside of their niche may actually have fewer dots.

My expectation of players is that they will help to make the story more engaging and rewarding, and that they will prioritize the shared experience over power-gaming or "cheese." I think your general suggestions and edits make sense, but I'll need more input from you as we play on how to incorporate the Mystery Cult because I am less familiar with Ars Magica and have only recently obtained Signs of Sorcery, so I have more work to do to better understand these mechanics and incorporate them into the story in a meaningful way. I want players to feel powerful and excited about their characters, and in a game of Mage, I am totally fine with characters being "awesome" or exceptional -- but I will provide opportunities for conflict built around the theme that power corrupts and that there are ramifications for your actions.

These are all awesome, and I really dig it. Thanks for being intentional about semiotics. I think Shadow Name is often overused and takes some of the challenge out of incorporating Yantras thoughtfully if the ST and player don't t set boundaries around the merit's use. I just wanted to make sure that you were thinking about when it does and doesn't apply.

Now if you wanted to make the situation really twisted - have her ex be a werewofl pack leader. Now you have Arthur and his knights in a complicated relationship with Morgana.
                    Mmmmm...Now we're talking.

Keeping with the Arthurian theme, since her mentor is only *, how about an Obrimos with a shadow name of Vivian (another name for the Lady of the Lake).

I'll get back to you on the mentor stuff, I need to review the merit and consider how to flesh them out. I actually wonder if it might be an interesting idea to have your mentor be the théarch who is in charge of Avalon Supply. So that would make the Obrimos another Silver Ladder member, and given that your Order Status is so low and her Gnosis and Arcana are so much higher, I'm pretty sure Vivian is definitely not going to view the mentor as bidirectional (even if Morganna, of course, may see it differently).

When you have time, can you find pictures to add for Morganna and Vivian?

                    • DrSteve - Just wanted to say that you’re officially in, in case that wasn’t clear. Looking forward to playing with you!

I have also posted a recruitment post on the RPG.net forums. It seems like they are way more active. Hoping that draws some more interest.

If I am somehow able to access RPG.net from work, I might suggest that we migrate there to play the game. I’ll let you know if I suggest that.

Awesome, glad to hear you are interested! No rush, like I said in the recruiting post, if there is more interest than openings, I’ll be selecting players who have the most interesting ideas and seem like the best fit for the group. Let me know if you have any questions.

All I need from you right now is to update your character sheet so it matches the changes you were thinking of making. If you want to change your background at all as well, consider what changes you want to make and enter those as well. If you can’t make those yet until our other members have entered drafts of their sheets, that’s ok too.

                              • I have a concept in mind, though I might be a bit inactive due to college reasons. Nevertheless, I'll post my character here once I have them all lined up in my head.
