I'm So Meta Even This Acronym

    • If we're the Watch Dogs, what do we watch? Do we keep an eye on the "naturally" occuring Irisis, trying to make sure sleepers don't walk in, spirits don't walk out and if possible close them up?

I'll be away for a week btw and thus won't be able to read/post during that time starting tomorrow.

      • Flinty - Thanks for the update, no worries.

I finally have some down time this weekend and will be working a lot on my to-do list to get the game up and running, which includes making my own character, reviewing Legacy conversions, and reviewing character sheets.

I had a few questions for you all. Just wanted to really make sure you are ok with me running my own character. My plan is to treat my PC using the same rules as all other characters, and I will be extra mindful of not meta-gaming. I just have spent over a year trying to find a Mage game to join as a player, and it hasn't worked out, so I would like to have a chance to play.

I was thinking about taking the Retainer merit to have my pet dog, who would represent an important NPC serving my character. I'm thinking a 2- or 3-dot merit would be right to reflect a professionally trained military working dog. Does that sound about right? Looking to use the "trained guard dog" stats on p.121 of the CoD core book. I would like feedback on whether that seems fair.

As far as Obsessions go, I want to remind people that these should essentially be long-term magic-related aspirations. You earn Arcane Beats when you make significant progress towards specific goals. So "Learn how and why the Loci are forming in Denver" is acceptable, but "Spirits" is too vague and "Meet a rank 3 Spirit" is more of a short-term aspiration rather than an Obsession.

Finally, I think I would like to make a few changes to character creation. We are still starting with 5 bonus XP and a cap of Gnosis 2, but I'm giving everyone Gnosis 2 for free. So for most of you, this means you'll get more Merit dots back at character creation. Also, as far as starting equipment goes, you can start with any number of items with Availability equal to your Resources Merit dots, and one or two items with an item rating one dot higher than your Resources. I like using Merits to flesh out characters and give more story hooks for NPCs, to reward players who truly invest in their relationships with NPCs using merits like Mentor or Allies, and to add more background nuance and customization to players.

Let me know if anyone has any problems with these details.

        • As for the dog a 2 point merit would be more than enough, seriously wouldn't even go with 2 point unless he was highly trained and effective. Three dot retainers are for professionals that can assist you in their field of expertise. So 2 for a trained military dog.

My look at Obsessions is that they are magical goals. There can be a short term or long term. If long term you can earn beats along the way and short term is a one shot. If you want to do away with the one shot I am fine with that and I will re-examine my Obsession.

Thanks for the 2 Gnosis and I will gladly take additional merits as I was trying to balance the merits with effectiveness and I fell short on merit points.

          • Also, I am going to officially adopt the house rule that if the ruling Arcanum for your Legacy is already one of your ruling Arcana, you get the optional Arcanum for your Legacy as a new ruling Arcanum.

I am taking my point of view based on this description of Obsessions in the character creation section of the core book:

"Obsessions are like long-term Aspirations, but grant Arcane Beats and Mana when you resolve and make major progress toward them."

Very well I have removed the Obsession that I had and will give a new long term Obsession some thought.

I have added some new merits as follows (Resources 2, increased Professional Training to 2, Safe place 1, and Trained Observer 1) That is another 5 points of merits. I have added the stats for the equipment that I have listed. The only thing that I couldn't find an availability for was the Car, you will need to tell me its availability and if I can afford it.

                The character sheet is here

No problem here...that just means I might pick up a familiar representing my old familiar when I was wolf blooded, as well as status with the local pack.
rwknoll That said...I would like to ask some questions about the Pack? You know so I know more about that part of my character's life. So I can write his physical description. Can you get back to me on that

                  • Due to a lack of activity on their part in the past month and for not responding to PMs or posts, I have decided to remove Ambersand from the group and invite BurritoMage to the group from our waiting list!

Burrito, please post a character concept here and start working on a character. We are using the standard rules for character creation with the following exceptions: start with Gnosis 2 for free (cannot start higher); use 5 bonus XP; and you can start with any number of items with item availability rating equal to your Resource merit in dots, and a select few items at Resources +1.

You're not required to play the character idea you briefly mentioned earlier in this thread (a Thyrsus street artist), but feel free to if that still sounds fun.

Concept: U.S. Army Veteran on a journey of personal and spiritual discovery

                      Shadow Name: Bruiser
John carried a reputation in his U.S. Army unit for being hot-headed but incredibly loyal. He always had his friend’s back, and he never gave up or ran away from a fight. After his injury, John battled with pain and withdrew from the world around him, but his Awakening filled him with a new sense of awe and determination. His Shadow Name is a warning to any who might harm him or his allies: You swing hard, I’ll swing harder.

                      Pre-Awakening:
John was born in the Chicago suburbs, but he didn't live there for long. Because his father actively served in the U.S. Air Force and had several permanent changes of station, their family was relocated multiple times; John remembers living in Illinois, Ohio, Colorado, and even Alaska. John struggled with these transitions, and their moves always caused tension between John's parents, ultimately leading to divorce. He and his mother moved back to Chicago when he was in middle school, and they stayed there until he graduated.

John remained in close contact with his father and admired his dedication to the military, and he joined the Army to help with college tuition. Because he enjoyed working with animals, he decided to pursue a military career as a dog handler. John was deployed twice to Iraq, where his partner Zeus, a smart labrador retriever trained to identify explosives, identified several IEDs before they were activated and saved the lives of dozens of soldiers, including John.

A few months before his second tour was scheduled to end, however, John was injured by an IED and had to be medically evaucated. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures in his arms, neck, and shoulder, requiring extensive surgery and rehabilitation and forcing him into medical retirement from the Army. Zeus similarly became more agitated and skittish after this incident and was retired from service, and John was able to adopt his partner, but he didn't know how to cope with the chronic back and shoulder pain that threatened to envelop his life. John quickly reached a point when he was heavily prescribed narcotics but couldn't find lasting relief.

                      The Awakening:
One day, John's father, who had ultimately settled in the Denver area near the local Air Force base, contacted him and told him that he heard from another airman about a "spiritual healer" who might be able to help John recover. John was immediately skeptical, but every other medical treatment he had tried -- surgery, medications, physical therapy -- hadn't worked. Out of desperation and fighting despair, he flew out to Denver to meet this holistic healer, but something about the rural area and the rugged wilderness began to evoke a change in him that he didn't fully understand. John met with this healer, who claimed that he was injured not just physically but spiritually, and he agreed to a ritualistic "cleansing" that supposedly would help him find "inner peace."

What happened next for John in that private, incense-filled room was his first true spiritual experience, an Astral journey to the Primal Wild. John's eyes were opened by the Moon to both the reflection of Life and the Shadow it casts upon the world. No longer bound by worldly knowledge, arguing with medical professionals about the "mind-body link" rather than the true duality of Life and Spirit, John broke the chains forged around his body and shattered them, and he uttered a Primal roar that formed rune-shaped cracks in the dirt where he stood.

The "holistic healer", who was actually just a guy looking for an easy scam target and equipped with some nice incense and cheap weed, was stunned when John emerged from the cramped shack with a radically different take on life. And at first, John did still experience pain; his Awakening hadn't changed that. But once he had experienced and survived the Ecstatic rush of the Primal Wild, pain was just another sensation that proved he was alive.

                      Post-Awakening:
Unknown to the "spiritual healer" or John, a mage had been closely following and investigating the patients of the "spiritual healer" looking for telltale signs of Awakening, and he quickly found John and introduced him into the Dever Consilium. With his new awarenes of Supernal magic and appreciation for the greater context of his existence, John embarked on a journey of personal transformation and development. He found himself drawn to the doctrine of the Adamantine Arrow, sought training and entrance, and successfully passed his training and testing requirements to earn his way into the Order. Taking the Shadow Name of "Bruiser", he continued with his journal of soul-searching and was initiated into the Legacy of the Perfected Adepts. As a Monk, Bruiser dedicates his waking hours to honing his physical and magical abilities, protecting his cabal and Consilium from danger, and studying the unique oddities of the Shadow in the Denver region.

                      Optional Arcanum: Prime 1
As “Supernal Vision”, but can only be used to examine a living person. Requires an instant activation to use.

As the “Purge Illness” spell. Take an instant action to subtract the Perfected Adept’s dots in Life Arcanum from the severity of any disease in his body. The subject’s bashing wounds also heal faster, and he gains 1/0 armor for the duration of the Attainment effect. Activating this Attainment requires one scene.

                      Optional Arcanum: Prime 3
As “Dispel Magic”, but can only affect spells directly targeting this subject and requires at least one dot in each Arcanum involved in the spell. The Attainment requires an instant action to activate and has a lasting effect.

Gain his Life dots in Potency and assign them between the Perfected Adept’s physical Attributes as extra dots. The affected Attributes cannot be raised above
the subject’s maximum Attribute dots (5 for normal human beings). Each activation requires one scene.

                      Optional Arcanum: Prime 5
As the “Supernal Dispellation” spell, this attainment allows the Perfected Adept to shrug off the effects of any undesirable spell that specifically targets him or includes him as a subject, with no need to possess the specific arcana involved in the spell. • A draft of my character sheet is up, still working on adding some details (including the backstory and Legacy info). Unfortunately I'm not sure I will have much time tonight to actually work on this like I thought I would, having some personal issues come up and I can't spend much time on the computer. Sorry guys.
