  • What's a realistic reaction to superheroes?

Like, say, a gigantic portal opens up in the Indian ocean today. It's somehow breaching both the air and the water... yet nothing seeps through. Its like there's a filter letting only solid objects through (the water currents don't intemix). And then, bunch of flying people go through.

It's the justice league (From Justice league unlimited). Slightly different here, more international and all. But still, it's them. Really recognizably them. So they come up to us, saying that a mad scientist had been planning to invade a defenseless earth with no superheroes to fight off his legions of clones and robots. So we're saved! Only that the portal's kinda permanent. They're working on it, but it'll take a year for the dimensional perturbations to stabilize enough such that they can even begin trying to close it.

So how would our world react?

    Stupidly.

But hopefully the heroes would, you know, do something about climate change, or some other big issues before closing the portal.

Yeah, really bad reactions all around. They would have been smartest to just lay low and not mention it, doing a public announcement would be like handing a world-changing truth to a bunch of people who react poorly to having their view of the world changed. We'd also wage war with each other over control of the portal. And blame them for it.

It's literally a giant portal it can't be hidden, and it's already seen on the internet

It's a portal to more resources. Anyone who gains control of it (and nearby you have India, China, the Middle East, and Australia) is basically going to become tremendously rich and get rid of a lot of serious modern day problems.

It's not something they have to put in a box and take to a fortress. Just like an island, it's something they can claim control of.

It's a gigantic bottleneck to an already occupied world with technology likely more advanced than us, with an army of superhumans living inside.

That will be for whoever crosses it to figure out for themselves. Our governments are not omniscient, they know there's a portal, and aren't going to trust the word of people claiming to be superheroes.

Even without crossing it, material waste, like hazardous materials we just bury in other countries right now, can be solved without having to personally cross through.

But a technologically advanced world on the other side is just more of a reward for whoever claims the portal.

                *raises eyebrow*

A person is there. He looks like superman. He flies like superman. He has superstrength like superman. And... you're going to attack? I mean, at the very least, you know that there's some freaky shit going on on the other side of the portal. Bumrushing in to do shit like dumping nuclear waste or invasion seems like really fucking dumb thing to do.

Would I (or likely nofather) attack?

                  No.

                  Would somebody?

                  Probably.

                    Yes. But who?

I think a relatively realistic reaction to the revelation that the world depicted in Justice League Unlimited actually exists, exactly as depicted by the show, would probably be an attempt by TimeWarner to revive the show and write episodes where Supes flies through the new portal with free gold for their board of directors.

Or possibly, on the other side of the portal, the superheroes realizing that everything bad that ever happened to them in their lives, their very existence, was something we wrote to entertain ourselves, and having some sort of mental breakdown.

                        But who?

                        …America?
Anyone who wanted, or didn't like someone else getting. Whether that's resources, technology, or simply 'space.' China's building islands solely so they can claim more territory while spying freely on every technologically advanced country as it is, why would they stop? The wealthiest and most powerful organizations in the world all want more.

Governments make decisions that a sane or reasonable individual wouldn't make. You don't even need a government to do it, just get some people together. Literally as you started this thread there was an attack on an American embassy in Baghdad, a city American forces has bombed hundreds of times and not even that long ago (as old as Vampire the Masquerade). There's a lot of history there but America is far from the only country that would do something aggressive about something as hugely significant as a portal.

I don't think it would lead to any world peace. I'd go crazy, I love DC Comics, I have a Batman symbol on my wedding ring. And 'realistically' if you played them straight, the Justice League would know better than to just make a public appearance like that, with Martian Manhunter and Aquaman perhaps shooing ships away while some stealth technology was used to shield the portal from view, or just block it. But this isn't the world of comics, if it was we wouldn't need comics to inspire us.

And if you think "it would be a dumb thing to do" would stop humans - any humans at all - you obviously need to bone up on your history and/or current events.

People have been doing patently absurd things for all of recorded history, and it's safe to assume we were making moronic decisions long before then, too. To take just one example from history off the top of my head, see the search for El Dorado.

Yes, but in this case, the 'dumb thing to do' would serve to get immediate reprisals. Either with Aquaman sinking the ships doing the shit, Superman stopping them, or Green Lantern just grabbing the nuclear waste and giving it back.

edit: Humans can do a lot of stupid shit. But when the stupid shit involves getting kicked in the nads by superhumans, that might change.

Again, you underestimate the stupidity of the human race.

OF COURSE it would be a terrible idea. People - especially governments, who are accustomed to vastly overestimating their ability to impose their will on the world - would still do it. Especially if there's even the chance of profit should the plan work.
