  • Daily Tao:

    If you realize that all things change,
    there is nothing you will try to hold on to.
    If you aren't afraid of dying,
    there is nothing you can't achieve.

    Trying to control the future
    is like trying to take the master carpenter's place.
    When you handle the master carpenter's tools,
    chances are that you'll cut your hand.

    "The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers." -- George Lucas via Princess Leia

    Ever tried to get a fist full of sand? Doesn't work well, huh. Sometimes, people get caught up so much in the activity and trying to strangle the life out of it that they forget to just enjoy the moment. Maybe instead of taking pictures of the food at the fancy restaurant, look at your dinner guest(s) and smile......it'll make them wonder what you're thinking.

      As it acts in the world, the Tao
      is like the bending of a bow.
      The top is bent downward;
      the bottom is bent up.
      It adjusts excess and deficiency
      so that there is perfect balance.
      It takes from what is too much
      and give to what isn't enough.

      Those who try to control,
      who use force to protect their power,
      go against the direction of the Tao.
      They take from those who don't have enough
      and give to those who have far too much.

      The Master can keep giving
      because there is no end to her wealth.
      She acts without expectation,
      succeeds without taking credit,
      and doesn't think that she is better
      than anyone else.

      Emphasis mine. I think we need more of that.

      • Daily Tao:

        Nothing in the world
        is as soft and yielding as water.
        Yet for dissolving the hard and inflexible,
        nothing can surpass it.

        The soft overcomes the hard;
        the gentle overcomes the rigid.
        Everyone knows this is true,
        but few can put it into practice.

        Therefore the Master remains
        serene in the midst of sorrow.
        Evil cannot enter his heart.
        Because he has given up helping,
        he is people's greatest help.

        True words seem paradoxical.

        • Not directly related, but tangentially so... and this was about the best place to make the idle comment. Last Week Tonight did an interview with the Dalai Lama. It was the first time I saw an interview with him of any kind. I have to say, he has much more of a sense of humour than I expected. A thing I can approve of.

            Yeah, I've never trusted a holy man who can't make or take a joke.

              Failure is an opportunity.
              If you blame someone else,
              there is no end to the blame.

              Therefore the Master
              fulfills her own obligations
              and corrects her own mistakes.
              She does what she needs to do
              and demands nothing of others.

                True words aren't eloquent;
                eloquent words aren't true.
                Wise men don't need to prove their point;
                men who need to prove their point aren't wise.

                The Master has no possessions.
                The more he does for others,
                the happier he is.
                The more he gives to others,
                the wealthier he is.

                The Tao nourishes by not forcing.
                By not dominating, the Master leads.

                  The Tao is like a well:
                  used but never used up.
                  It is like the eternal void:
                  filled with infinite possibilities.

                  It is hidden but always present.
                  I don't know who gave birth to it.
                  It is older than God.

                    The Tao doesn't take sides;
                    it gives birth to both good and evil.
                    The Master doesn't take sides;
                    she welcomes both saints and sinners.

                    The Tao is like a bellows:
                    it is empty yet infinitely capable.
                    The more you use it, the more it produces;
                    the more you talk of it, the less you understand.

                    Hold on to the center.

                      The Tao is called the Great Mother:
                      empty yet inexhaustible,
                      it gives birth to infinite worlds.

                      It is always present within you.
                      You can use it any way you want

                        • LOADING SARCASM MODE.................

                          I've been building up the courage to say it, and with so many of these minorities (Trump supporters, Christians, other normative groups) "coming out" as what they are, I think I can do it finally.

                          I am a Caucasian adult male cisgender heteronormative (but some of those transwomen look awfully good) not-quite-athiestistic Taoist Absurdist bear.

                          There! I said it! I feel so much better!

                          SARCASM ROUTINE COMPLETED.
