  • [Pirates of Pugmire] Callings Access Inconsistency

Something I uncovered in Pirates Preview 1 when my players are doing chargen. ( Already posted in Errata Form, but still need answer for now running game. ) It's an inconsistency on rules about Races access to particular Callings.

Page 9: ‘Bird and lizard characters can take any of the six callings in this book.’

Page 16: ‘The only way to become an alkalist is to be trained by one, so any who want to learn the secrets and knacks must find a teacher. The lizards keep their knowledge close, however, and will not teach any non-lizards alkalist mysteries. Though not quite a religion, the ways of alkalists are something lizards hold as sacred to their people.’

Page 17: ‘This calling is unique to birds and it suits their personalities perfectly, making rimers the center of attention wherever they go.‘

Now, to go into topic, I can easily see it goes both ways. Page 9 states that any Calling can be used by anyone from birds and lizards - and me and my players already thought of it. For example, Rimer based on storytelling sounds fitting to Lizards culture, with all of it basing on storytelling. And Lizards would appreciate Charisma based spellcaster - as without it, all their spellcasters would be Alkalist based on Wisdom or Intelligence. ( By the way, pointing on what spellcasting Attribute Callings in Pirates are doing spells would be godsend! To both Alkalist and Rimer. )

On the other hand, Alkalists are almost religion to Lizards. And it does make sense they would not share their secrets there. Rimers are much less important and unique to Birds culture, contrary to text stating it other way.

Thinking on this dilemma - I probably would let it roll with page 9 take. Any Bird or Lizard can take Alkalist or Rimer - they are both just more prominent in their home cultures. Alkalists are Lizards priests-specialists but can be Calling can be teach to other races - they are just very rare as most races do not appreciate salt the same way Lizards do.

Still, it's only my take on subject - and I would appreciate official gameline take on it, eddyfate.

By the way - Good would be also pointing stance on Birds and Lizards access for Pugmire and Monarchies of Mau Callings. Can Lizards become Arcanists? Can Birds become Ministers? Some clear answer would be good to be stated in sourcebook.

Yup, that's mentioned in errata. It'll be corrected in the final product. Not going to make any official rulings until that's out, because things might change between now and the PDF release. Thanks!

Only mentioning that I playtest for now letting every Race taking every Calling - only those that are 'original culture' ( like Alkalist for Lizards ) is natural - and those that are outside from it ( like cat Rimer would be ) are 'rare individual that trained in exotic arts of original culture'. Will notice if anything unusual will pop-up in play.

Again, no need. The manuscript is going to be going to editing soon, so the playtest phase is closed. This issue was noted in the playtest data, so it'll be handled. Thanks!

I just experiment with rules as they are written now. One player makes Geckos Rimer that seems very fitting looking how Lizards culture is all about storytelling.

There is another thing that I found about Callings in Pirates that should be fixed – and I, unfortunately, not pointed it in Errata form. In spellcasting Callings, there is not pointed “spellcasting ability”, at all!

In Mau corebook, they are marked in spellcasting Secrets – so Given the Voice ( Minister Secret ) point’s it’s Charisma based spells. Mancy points it’s Intelligence based. Nothing like this is in Preview Pirates. I suspect the spellcasting abilities for Callings should be like this:
            • Crusader – Charisma
            • Mystic – Intelligence
            • Alkalist – Intelligence
            • Rimer – Charisma
