  • Requesting a reading suggestion, Rmnc 3 Kingdoms

    Heya folks, I'm strongly considering taking up the epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, partially to get out of my own myth canon and partially for inspiration for the more political sections of my game. Does anyone have a favorite edition or translation they can suggest? Knowing its reputatiin I'd favor readable and enjoyable, and possibly concise, over accuracy.

    Bonus points, a favorite edition/translation for Journey to the West?

    Thanks!

    I always go Unabridged and these are the editions I have

    You can read them online too http://threekingdoms.com/download.htm

    I also got A Dream of Red Mansions and Outlaws of the Marsh by this publisher.

    This will probably not pop up immediately because of the Links.

    It is a time for great deeds!

      I own the 2-book 'Complete and Unabridged' version translated by Moss Roberts.

      If you actually go through with reading it I must offer a warning - it's pretty dry reading. I read 'Romance' and 'Water Margin' while I was at university and it was pretty much the same for both of them. The original authors, I'd be better off calling them "compilers", were hardly what you'd call a novelist.

      Moving on, try taking what is written with a grain of salt. Maybe 40% or so of "Romance..." is just fiction and not based on any real events.

      For a different experience, have you considered the Sangokushi manga?

      --> https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=30690

      --> http://bato.to/comic/_/comics/sangokushi-r2533

      It covers the same things, with the additional bonus of being fully illustrated (albeit in a very old style.)

      Another manga also comes to mind, this one not as old: http://bato.to/comic/_/comics/the-ravages-of-time-r1920

          To me, the hardest thing about reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms was just keeping track of the various names that all refer to the same person. Every character seems to have like 4 names and the usage depends on their relationship with the other party in any given piece of dialogue. This is exacerbated by several strategy meetings where two or three characters in the room will refer to dozens of other characters "in the field."
