My understanding is that the Exalted developed magic that let you greatly reduce the effective mass of the weapon for the person using it. Thus, stupidly huge weapons allow you to impart a lot more force to the target, which is what gives them their boosted stats.

I've always liked the idea of an Exalted who wields a 'fragment' of a ridiculously huge weapon. They have what looks like an arming sword-sized blade of Orichalcum, but the rest of the enormous weapon is chilling in Elsewhere until it's time for the Giga Drill Breaker or whatever.

That said, I still like surfboard-swords and the imagery of weapons like that, but ultimately it is about the aesthetics of the specific character.

3e's core describes the grand daiklave as six feet long and over a foot wide, which Wikipedia says is about as long as a zweihander but significantly longer. I don't know enough about swords to comment on that, but I'm sure someone will be along presently.
For the sake of completeness: reaver daiklaves are four feet wide and up to a foot long, the original daiklave is 4-6 feet and up to half a foot in width, the slayer khatar is 2-3 feet and the short daiklave is three feet long.

I love the "ridiculously huge" weapon aesthetic. In my current game, only one of the PCs is using a BFS, though. The Dawn Caste Solar has a daiklave, but the rest of the party's weapons are fairly moderate in size. The party's Eclipse Caste does use a huge calligraphy brush with bristles that stick together to become a point, but it's actually the size of a normal spear, so I don't think it counts as an "oversized weapon" so much as an "oversized tool that happens to be the same size as a normal weapon." XD

I have an off topic but related question for Jen...

You always decorate your threads with these great cartoons and illustrations - how long do they take you to produce? Did you do the image on this thread just for the purpose of this discussion?

Yeah, it started with a thread about men (i.e Cearr) wearing skirt in Creation and just kinda become a tradition for me....

Personally, I *hate* drastically oversized weapons. What other characters lug about isn't my concern, though an adversary with a battle surfboard is hard to not think of as compensating for something. I always picture my 3E Twilight's Daiklaive as being of a practical size, like, barely any larger than a mortal sword and sheathed on the hip levels of practical.

I imagine that the upper end of weapons are still not much larger than the average person, so they don't look very disproportionate.

I've played a lot of Dark Souls, so being able to picture not only the proportional ratios of these things, but also them flowing around like silk in combat, is something that I have a very good reference point for.

                            For example:

(One can also see in that first fight how one deals with the issue of confined spaces by just pointing the sword forward)

I have approximate knowledge of many things.

I have another question for those who dislike oversized weapons, do you mean the "Around 6 feet long for Grand weapon while regular one are 4 feet" in the book (if my calculation is correct then the first is only as tall as a grow man while the latter will reach somewhere around your chest and neck), or do you mean something like the axe/hammer in the header picture i.e Waaaaaaaay taller and bigger than the owner.

Since from what I have read on the Internet about Artifact weapon in Exalted (someone describe them as "cartoonishly giant weapons"), those humongous things in the header picture is what on my mind, but the actual size of the weapon in the book is kinda.....underwhelming, I mean, a Daikailve is bigger than a regular sword, but not that big.

I despise oversized weapons, so if I ever do play Exalted, my PCs' artifact weapons will be described as having normal size. Just, you know, made of magical materials with Essence coursing through them. I don't get the appeal of superhuge weapons, and I doubt I ever will.
