  • Proposed Crippling Injury: Fatal Certainty

The Exalted are extraordinarily resilient to injury, and do not casually bleed out or suffer from shock and sepsis as the common run of man. Nevertheless, some injuries are so severe that- while not instantly fatal -they are a guarantee of passing on soon.

Fatal Certainty is a 5 health level crippling injury (Exalted p 202), representing massive trauma to a major vital organ, such as the heart, lungs, or visceral systems. While the character can continue acting for the remainder of the scene (albeit with doubled wound penalties), they will die once the scene has concluded. Additionally, all further damage she sustains is treated as Aggravated.

Preventing this death is nearly impossible for even the greatest of Exalted doctors, requiring the immediate application of Charms such as Wound-Cleansing Meditation to arrest for a time, or Wholeness-Restoring Meditation to repair. Often all that can be done is to ease the passage of the dying with a final mouthful of water or wine.

(Because last stands and continuing to fight after the point where a fatal injury has been dealt are like, super common tropes that don't get captured well in the present system)

Kind of like it, would need more mechanical support, perhaps more lenient kill window. Like suffering one level of damage per minute after the scene ends (giving you a few minutes for post combat triage or a neat-o tear jerking death scene)

My concern with Fatal Certainty to health level loss lives around Charms that heal damage becoming a wedge to argue that the character survives so long as XYZ is active- having a fiat 'you die unless you are saved via magics on this tier of Aesculapius-healing' felt safer.

OTOH, now that we've seen Halting the Scarlet Flow and other Lunar regeneration tricks, it's perhaps less of a concern.
