  • How would the Unconquered Sun respond to an Infernal Exalt?

I had this on the backburner, but seeing the 'ask the unconquered sun' thread made me want to write this down.

    Backstory time!

I was wondering about writing an SI in Creation. Then I realized that most people don't want to see boring old me in Exalted. I wouldn't. But the concept of having foreknowledge and understanding of Exalted from the outer perspective is pretty much irresistible to me. So I had an idea. Why not play the mentor role? So, say, instead of me getting an exaltation, it's someone else. Someone, like, say, an Infernal. Or a Solar. Someone that my 'drop in from real world' character could lend guidance to as someone who already knew what their powers were, how they worked, and what they could do. So that was that.

    The infernal in question:

A 14 year old girl thief, who was a street urchin. Frightened. Fearful. Timid. Non-confrontational.... so good at avoiding confrontation, that she's pretty much high stealth, high larceny. Capable of going about her business in absolute darkness, and steal from nearly anywhere. Good with tactics and strategy, willing to set fires and sabotage as a distraction. Well, she was goign about her business.... when she got kidnapped by raiders. Slavers. She got free.... and got caught again. This time, they were angry. They beat her. They hamstrung her. And they threw her into the brig to rot, until they got bored.

In the darkness, crippled, bleeding, and knowing her likely fate, she wept, cursing herself. She should have been faster. She shouldn't have hesitated. She shouldn't have been so careless. She shouldn't have been so afraid. And then, a knock on the door came. A demon entered, bearing an infernal exaltation. And then.... transformation.

The raiders never knew who it was that poisoned their supplies. But after a few days in the mountains with no food and the crippling pain induced by the poison, it didn't matter anymore.

And then, the girl wandered away. Her unwoven coadjucator a silent voice in her head, urging her to go claim her destiny and birthright. But Exaltation doesn't change people... at least, not that fast, and her being a favoured of Cecylene and the Ebon Dragon, she wasn't much in the mood for doing anything. At this point, she meets the SI.... who served as a hard anchor for her, and someone who can tell her wtf is going on.

Here's the thing. Let's say our hypothetical infernal wanders through a celestial gate by accident during Calibration and the Carnival. She wanders the hallways of Yu-shan, wondering at the opulence she's never seen in her years in the back alleys and looking at the gods. She isn't halted.... a combination of ebon dragon charms and a cecylene charm that gives her bonuses against spirits means that the gods around her don't notice her.

That is... until she bumps into someone big and heavy. She crashes to the floor, and looks up to see a giant, golden four-armed man. And the Unconquered Sun looks at her, and realizing something is wrong, decides to focus. And at this point, her disguise is torn apart by the sheer might of Sol Invictus's personal attention, and she meets him face to face, Infernal Exalt meeting the Unconquered Sun for the first time.

What can be the potential fallout and consequences for this first meeting?

Well depending on how cool an awesome the Infernal was maybe the Unconquered Sun would go, "Oh holy shit, I can't believe I just bumped into you here of all places! Seriously, I'm a huge fan! Look, I don't want to come off as rude or anything, but could I bother you for your autograph? Maybe even a selfie? Seriously, you're the best. I can't wait to see the look on Luna's face when I tell her about this!"

Yeah, she's only been out for a few months. She hasn't done anything world shaking yet.

There's not even a full minute of him turning his face toward creation in the last xty hundred years. Your character is a waitress who broke a glass. I'd be surprised if he even broke step acknowledging you.

Huh. That's unfortunate. I at least would imagine him wondering 'is that a solar exaltation, and why is there the taint of Malfeas and the ebon dragon on it?'

I think he's the sort who'd tip the waitress having a bad day with an anecdote about how he once had a job waiting tables and just look at where he is now. Their interaction is of course all about him and aleviating his own doubts about himself and the system. However he's kind of oblivious to the fact that by doing so he's drawing attention to the fact she's broken a glass in front of an extremely influential customer and potentially put her job at risk.

For the general question, I'd be inclined to portray the Unconquered Sun as generally reasonable but with a few things that he can be kind of reactionary about. The Underworld and Yozis are one of those things, theft and transgression upon his Exaltations are another. I would portray a first impression of an Infernal Exalt as being, let's say, in line with what the Yozis intend it to be seen as; an insult and a challenge.

Albeit one that is ideally addressed by way of the Solar Exalted that it is intended to refute.

The Unconquered Sun id really the best of people that we can imagine, at least at his core he is. That he is broken-hearted and stuck playing the games to avoid facing the world doesn't really change that. In the case of this Infernal suddenly showing up in his presence he would be compelled by his very nature to act. In this case his action would almost certainly be his compassion shining through. He would give her some truly uplifting words and then probably summon Lytek and maybe some other gods of healing to address the afflicting that is the infernal corruption of her exaltation, he is still the king of heaven and there are other gods much better suited to healing this girl. Many other gods may demand some form of punishment or vengeance against the infernal but the Unconquered Sun has absolutely no reason to be anything but compassionate in this situation.

I don't think your interpretation is the only valid one, I would totally see a more "rigid" Unconquered Sun being in theme. But I like yours more.

Maybe he would burn away the Infernal taint and transform her into a real Solar Exalted. But he's also really busy playing the Games of Divinity and intriguing/flirting with the other Incarnae, so he might not even notice her unless she was REALLY beautiful or interesting enough in some other way to catch his attention (other than being an Infernal).

Regardless of how nice or not he is, surely he'll be confused and shocked, and want to know what in Creation this girl is; what's happened to the Solar Exaltation he made? Why is it tainted by the Yozis?

I run... Lunars: The Apocalypse! Exalted 3rd edition. Fimbulwinter is upon the world as an Ice Age begins, and only six young Lunar heroes have a chance of saving humanity.

Third Edition is specifically intended to avoid giving any official stance on exactly what kind of person the Sun is, what he’s doing, or how much he’s paying attention.

He is whatever your storyteller wants him to be.
