  • Sulumor's Shiny New Wardrobe: Fixing Past Edition Fashion Disaster

"We finally have a transformation sequence in Third Edition ! Eat your heart out, Sidereal Martial Artist !"

Exalted isn't immune to Horrid Cloth Syndrome, and with the new Edition coming maybe it time I display my unreasonable displeasure with some of the NPC who are dress most inappropriately, and maybe throw in some photo reference for a replacement costume.
    • Sulumor: AKA Hell-nun/Bondage-nun, get a lot of flack for wearing a Christianity costume in Exalted, but she's a Dune person which mean "Nude All The Time" was all she know pre-Exalted, it's not her fault that Cyan like to give people bad fashion advice. No comment on the nun-bikini, but I really like that nun-hat, I actually don't even realize she was wearing panty when I first look at her due to how mesmerizing that hat looked. Luckily there are other head accessories with similar design. The most obviously choice would be a hijab, since her Past Life wore what seem like a Western wedding costume, it's would be nice that she also choose this as her cloth (it's an Indian bride FYI). If you want to preserve her religious schtick then there is also Japanese and Vietnamese Buddhism nun.
    • The Bull of the North: The Ice-walker seem like a mash-up of many nomadic cultural, and yet their leader (and his sorcerer girlfriend) dress like a homeless DnD hobo reject, it's bad enough that he don't even know his people cultural, but do he really think being a beefcake mean wearing armor with your belly exposed and having a pornstache + mullet combo, urggh, just horrid. I'm an amateur so I will leave this case for those with more experience at preventing fashion horror (giving him Mongolian armor just doesn't feel right for some reason).
    • Mnemon: I.........hate her cloth so much, it's just look so tacky and Barbie-like, I expect a Great House's leader would dress more fabulously. The shoulder pad look very unnecessary, and her cloth don't have enough pattern and accessories which give her a very mundane and plain look. I would suggest a hanbok for her, it's Korean traditional cloth which feature very bright and vibrant color palette, the contrast between the skirt and the shirt would make her pop out more, and the "fluffy" look of the skirt will make her seem very imposing, the only downside is hanbok won't make her giant cow-tits look very noticeable though.
    • The Scarlet Empress: Has the same problem with Mnemon, her default cloth is just too simple for someone like her, and most artist don't bother to make any modifications to it in their artwork. I would suggest an Chinese Empress style for her, since it's look extremely sinister in an Evil-Queen sort of way, and beside, I want to see what sort of crazy stuff artist would put on her head !
    • Demetheus: It's not nice to going shirtless but then wear a long-coat that only reveal 1/2 of that glorious body, I suggest that future artists are only allow to draw him naked from now on. And beside, him going around punching evil folk while naked make more sense why Sulumor take such an interested in him, hellnun seem like she really want a collection of bear heh heh heh.

I would be down with switching Sulumor over to the garb of a Buddhist nun, but I really think she should retain the "twisted religious costume" aesthetic. I think her "hellnun" look was used as visual shorthand for an audience that is mostly familiar with Christian iconography, which makes it lazy, and her overt sexualization is problematic in certain ways. Still, I think it's entirely possible to make a character sexy without objectification, so I also hope that Sulumor retains some sexiness. I've used her to great extent in my own campaign, and she's one of my circle's favorite villains.

Funny story - I actually have no idea how any of those characters dress, and had to look up pictures for all of them.

      Sulumor
Bull of the North, AKA Yurgen Kaneko
      Scarlet Empress
      Demetheus

      Images in spoilers:

I couldn't find one for Mnemon - what does she look like, exactly?

        She looks like this.

Slightly better view on the front cover of MOEP: DB

My personal idea of Sulumor has her, when among her own people, generally going naked in a non-sexy way (people who walk around exposing their skin to sandstorms are rarely sexy... usually because they're dead), her skin having a rough, sandy texture, and sporting two huge shimmering wasp wings. Most of the time though, you'd see her among other people as a sort of wandering preacher, in which case she would be dressed much like a touareg.

Bits and pieces of Exalted setting.

I think the charm that lets her walk around in sunlight only works in Places of Desolation so she probably does have to cover up if she goes in a city.

I thought maybe the Exaltation burned away Sulumor's albinism mutation, but Scroll of Exalts lists her having Sun-Seared as a flaw, so yeah, Transcendent Desert Creature will only get her so far.

Huh. I found those pictures, but I assume that they were of someone else. Well then...

Now that I know enough to make a judgement, I'm with the OP in hoping that there will be better costume designs in the future of Exalted. There are a lot of ways to make an outfit interesting without showing a lot of skin. More than that, though, I sincerely hope that we don't still have the JRPG Protagonist Problem, wherein you can always pick main characters out of a crowd because they're dressed really outlandishly compared to everyone around them. I'd like every character to wear stuff that is reflective of the culture they came from, and would not look especially out of place in the right environment.

Presumably Ligier is nicer than bad old Conky and allows her to roam Malfeas unscorched.

You should probably ignore the flaw. There was a perfectly servicable negative mutation that covered this in CoCD: Wyld, but the Scroll of Heroes just had to... do its own thing. And we all know how well that turned out, what with the Dune People suddenly becoming ugly just because and the Djala being merged with Minikin and getting Enlightened Essence all around.

Her face structure and that pounty lip is enough to make her an alluring seductress me think. Though I can't think of any Evil Buddhism character with cloth that scream EVIL.

Counter-proposal: MORE MOSTLY-NAKED DUDES PLZ. From what I have heard Volfer will not disappoint in this regard.

Freely displayed tits, pecs, and/or ass are the most common and (to my way of thinking) laziest means of making a character stand out*. There are two ways to solve this:
                          1. No naked people.
                          2. Entire populations of naked people, in which the individual naked people aren't highly irregular.

#2 might be the better option for this setting, as long as they don't come from the North.

*The second-most common way is making sure no two pieces of clothing they wear match, and the third-most common is having ridiculous shoulderpads.

What I like about the Dragonblooded cover is that all the sigs have the colour of their aspect except for Memnon that goes "Fuck that, I'm pink and I dare you to question me about it".

The awesome Paragon and his awesome staff, another victim of bad fashion (and botched plastic surgery, not to mention the silly hair-cut). Yeah, I only hate him because of his horrible clothing.
