  • Sulumor's Shiny New Wardrobe: Fixing Past Edition Fashion Disaster

"We finally have a transformation sequence in Third Edition ! Eat your heart out, Sidereal Martial Artist !"

Exalted isn't immune to Horrid Cloth Syndrome, and with the new Edition coming maybe it time I display my unreasonable displeasure with some of the NPC who are dress most inappropriately, and maybe throw in some photo reference for a replacement costume.
    • Sulumor: AKA Hell-nun/Bondage-nun, get a lot of flack for wearing a Christianity costume in Exalted, but she's a Dune person which mean "Nude All The Time" was all she know pre-Exalted, it's not her fault that Cyan like to give people bad fashion advice. No comment on the nun-bikini, but I really like that nun-hat, I actually don't even realize she was wearing panty when I first look at her due to how mesmerizing that hat looked. Luckily there are other head accessories with similar design. The most obviously choice would be a hijab, since her Past Life wore what seem like a Western wedding costume, it's would be nice that she also choose this as her cloth (it's an Indian bride FYI). If you want to preserve her religious schtick then there is also Japanese and Vietnamese Buddhism nun.
    • The Bull of the North: The Ice-walker seem like a mash-up of many nomadic cultural, and yet their leader (and his sorcerer girlfriend) dress like a homeless DnD hobo reject, it's bad enough that he don't even know his people cultural, but do he really think being a beefcake mean wearing armor with your belly exposed and having a pornstache + mullet combo, urggh, just horrid. I'm an amateur so I will leave this case for those with more experience at preventing fashion horror (giving him Mongolian armor just doesn't feel right for some reason).
    • Mnemon: I.........hate her cloth so much, it's just look so tacky and Barbie-like, I expect a Great House's leader would dress more fabulously. The shoulder pad look very unnecessary, and her cloth don't have enough pattern and accessories which give her a very mundane and plain look. I would suggest a hanbok for her, it's Korean traditional cloth which feature very bright and vibrant color palette, the contrast between the skirt and the shirt would make her pop out more, and the "fluffy" look of the skirt will make her seem very imposing, the only downside is hanbok won't make her giant cow-tits look very noticeable though.
    • The Scarlet Empress: Has the same problem with Mnemon, her default cloth is just too simple for someone like her, and most artist don't bother to make any modifications to it in their artwork. I would suggest an Chinese Empress style for her, since it's look extremely sinister in an Evil-Queen sort of way, and beside, I want to see what sort of crazy stuff artist would put on her head !
    • Demetheus: It's not nice to going shirtless but then wear a long-coat that only reveal 1/2 of that glorious body, I suggest that future artists are only allow to draw him naked from now on. And beside, him going around punching evil folk while naked make more sense why Sulumor take such an interested in him, hellnun seem like she really want a collection of bear heh heh heh.

Meh, my character's wardrobe consists entirely of stuff made with an amulet of infinite resplendence along with the obligatory Ronin Warriors/Sailor Moon style transformation sequence.

I've long had the headcanon that artifact armor need only make a token attempt at covering the vitals and consist of enough metal to justify the mobility penalty to function at full capacity.

Both, really. Skimpy has more place than it "normally" would (after all, if I was a godlike entity with a platonic body i'd show it off, beautiful or ugly), but they're still people, at least at the beginning
So most of them will dress in a mix of Culture, Practicality and Purpose.

Culture is regional, each place has its own style shaped by traditions and geography (mainly the weather). Tropical weather brings less clothing. Cold brings coats and furs.
Practicality is seen on day-to-day clothes as ease of use, on workers of all kinds as proper(ish) apparel. Common folk wear simple clothing, that doesn't get in the way. Nobles show off their power by using impractical clothing that depicts just how much daily work they make others do to afford wearing that. Poachers and Hunters will be covered to protect from the rougher vegetation and nasty insects.

    That's not modesty. It's fashion.

Anyway, about Anja Silverclaw, if she appear again then I hope they choose the design in the No-Moon Caste description instead of the Sex Kitty fur-bikini in Scroll of Exalted.
Different tastes. Your suggestion of hairstyles for the empress is, to me, a long gallery of how to make me wince in displeasure
I also saw a general tendency in the posts here to cover women up more and cover men up less.
I call bullshit on it, just like I call bullshit on any other such broad tendency. Make it *regional*. Westerners and deep easterners are scantily clad when it's hot and humid, and more covered during winter.. Southerners are overly dressed because the sun and sand are bad mofos. Unless they're partying.

That wasn't a fur-bikini. She was just furry and in a regular bikini. Not the same thing at all.

Conveying an image or an affiliation is something; stuff in the manner of uniforms or regalia.

I think in terms of clothing, the term "practical" also refers to the idea that the clothes won't get in the way, get caught or tangled, or fall away at inopportune times.

Although even then, I'm pretty all for the idea of Exalts who adopt clothing that would be impractical for anybody else as a way of showing off their superior agility or strength. The Thousand Correct Actions refers to the idea that Dragon Blooded officers are permitted to dress in basically any manner they wish, and I do like the idea that this leads to some Dynastic commanders in the legions who dress rather distinctively, even outlandishly, for the sake of standing out or indulging their fashion sense or retaining the apparel of some other affiliation (such as wearing a gi), and it doesn't really affect their combat performance or undermine their safety from rear command positions.

But not to use as an excuse for weird fetish gear.

Frankly I think it would be funny if Su's getup was due to her knowing that people consider certain bits proper to cover and other bits proper to leave exposed but can never remember which bits are which because she's new to the whole clothing thing.
