It's also odd because, IIRC, in 1st ed it said that some houses don't care what you wear, but other houses are very proud of their element and strongly encourage all their members to wear the house colour as much as possible. And, IIRC, one of the houses most keen on it was Mnemon. So it's weird that Mnemon doesn't wear white (though maybe it's to show that she's so awesome she doesn't have to play by her own rules).
Though also, purple (and yellow, and brown, and grey, and pink) is one of the colours that is acceptable for non-Exalted dynasts to wear as it's not elemental (if I'm remembering this right, I don't have a 1st ed DB book, I've just read it). So you'd think she'd avoid it as a lower-class colour.

    Anyway, as to:

Because her mother didn't hug her, ever. And the way her brother tried to murder her multiple times, often with things like poisoned gifts, probably makes it just a little bit difficult for her to trust others.
Maybe you can play the one person who can melt her icy heart like a bad romantic comedy, good luck with that. Because that woman needs therapy.

    My characters:
Dr Soma Vaidya, viper-totem Lunar and kung-fu doctor
Brother Alazar, Zenith occultist and last survivor of the Black Monastery of Leng
Shadow of Kings, Twilight barbarian scholar, master of lost First Age crafting techniques. Has a lot of clones. Picture by Jen.

In my case I sacrificed my mortal name

As for my read on Mnemon, it's because she wants to be her mother. Everything I have heard and seen about her says she is so used to emotional distance because that's what the Empress gave her; she is the result of a distant parentage, without the benefit of someone to cling to, and a mixture of hero-worship, hatred and resentment.

She's a powerful sorceress, like her mother. She's beautiful, like her mother, she's an Earth Aspect, like her mother, she likes to be known by a color as a metonym to her name, like her mother, she can't even comfortably think about anyone else sitting the Scarlet throne except herself.

This all speaks of a person who very simply is a little girl who wants one thing in the whole world, is crying out for attention from a parent she will never receive, and resents her for ignoring her, for not measuring up, and honestly, can't let go of her hero, so she wants to become the distant, untouchable, bulletproof figure the Empress was, and whom she was likely infuriated to find out was nothing more than a construction.

But that's just my two cents.

Mnemon doesn't want to be her mother. The Scarlet Empress was the mistress of the Realm: ten thousand squabbling children squabbling and factioning and feuding and playing games against each other while she ruled distantly. Her reign was based on division and careful harnessing of conflict.

Mnemon doesn't want that. Mnemon wants the entire Realm to be molded in her image, to be the House of Mnemon: ten thousand inferiors crawling at her feet, clay in her fingertips, and she, mistress unconquested, sorceress supreme, having squashed all her siblings.

Mnemon looks like she wants to be the Empress, but the Empress was utilitarian. Mnemon is much more... megalomaniacal.

Bits and pieces of Exalted setting.

In that case she wants to be more, to surpass her, to prove her superiority to her once and for all, to throw off the yoke of the woman she will always be compared to.

After all, her mother can acknowledge her then from a chain at the foot of Mnemon's throne.

I love that image. Going to have to use it.

That said...The Purple thing might also be because she is using a hearth stone to keep herself young (Stuck bodily at something like 16?) Not to mention not all house colors could the element color, House Mnemon might be Purple and Gold.

Man you can really read in some Kiryuuin Satsuki/Kiryuuin Ragyuu (Kill la Kill) parallels with Mnemnon and Her Redness.

Well she certainly picked the most hideous shade of purple to wear. And, again, that dress fits her horrendously. I'm sure many of the other Dynasts make fun of her for it. I'm sure mothers tell their daughters, "You don't want to look like Mnemon, do you?"

She's Earth-Aspected, she should ditch the purple dress for some flowing white silk chiffon. Make the crown darker and more severe (to project power), use food dyes to enhance the red of her hair. Get up in some really high heels to literally tower over her lessers. She could be really fierce and commanding but, at present, her character design really phones it in. Her purple dress makes me sad and angry. I hate it.
You are now and forever my nemesis. Her dress is amazing. The White-Jade crown a work of beauty. Had I the resources or personal skill to do so I would go as Mnemon for halloween or cosplay as her for every convention.
Your ideas make her into some sort of Disney character. No part of chiffon makes anyone look powerful, ever. You are wrong and should feel bad about how wrong you are.

Flowing, translucent, buoyant silk chiffon? Oh sweetie, let us sit down and watch the "Johnny Chiffon-y" season of Project Runway, shall we? But, really, that purple dress just looks so uncomfortable. It has all the shape of a trash bag filled with meat.

I love the idea of her White-Jade Crown, I just have never liked any of its depictions so far.

Unlike Mnemon, Satsuki actually cares about her younger sister.

Glad I'm not the only one who hate Mnemon's dres. Her shoulderpad's design is just meh, her chest area is a big blob of purple, that "crotch" protection piece that attach to her big belt just shred her image as a powerful Exalted to pieces.

It's not that her dress are too ugly, more like it's too bland and mediocre for someone like Mnemon, or maybe that magic explosion cause her sense of fashion to deteriorate like a zombie, no, like the Lover !

Just to point out, it isn't a dress. It's a Jade reinforced breastplate with some cloth added onto it. So yeah, it looks a bit frumpy, but that's because it's combat ready battle armor, and it probably has a much higher soak than a white silk chiffon dress would. Ultimately Mnemon is the kind of person who would rather be frumpy and alive than fierce and demanding but dead.

So someone tried to pretty up a breastplate by adding purple cloth to it? Oh man ... that makes my heart hurt.
