She's mean because she knows her fashion game is absolute shit and has deemed fit to take out her frustration on everyone around her.

I do, but most people today aren't members of culturally distinct and politically important noble families.

That world's Victor was Sugar Baby Whitman*. And Frederick Steiner, who ended up calling himself Victor instead of Anastasius.

With the caveat of being able to change the House of their family according to political needs. Like that couple with the "Legion" made entirely of pleasure slaves thinking of defecting to Cynis (which IIRC is the wife's house).

Realm society is matriachal (and mothers don't need a maturity test), so it's fair to say there are probably DBs who take their wife's name because their kids are (probably) going to be in the wife's house (especially if there are tensions between the two houses). But on the whole, I agree they usually keep their own name.

Honestly, as a Spaniard the whole "wife takes the name of the husband" thing always was more confusing to me :P.

In the end the two characters kind of fell for each other a bit though (despite being a Solar, we managed to persuade her that the Immaculate texts were not infallible, which was tricky enough let me tell you) and became pretty intimate and it seemed like the problem had been solved.
That's a pretty tall order. She's perfectly aware of the truth behind the Immaculate texts already, she even had a private chat with one of the Sidereals who wrote them!

While it shouldn't be news to you that the Smoke Jaguars are long gone*, the Nova Cats are hovering around joining them, in that the Spirit Cats in the Clan Protectorate (located in some former FWL territory, next to the Wolf Empire) are all that's left after the main branch backed the wrong horse in the Draconis Combine civil war.

Assuming they're both Dragonblood. Dragonblood always beats mortal, it's just if they're both DBs or both mortals then it's the mother's family.
Hence Cynis Denovah Avaku's kids are Cynis not Mnemon, because his wife is a mortal.
Also, while I think you are right that it does say the guys take their wive's names, I can't think of a single example where this actually happens. What actually seems to be the case is that everyone keeps their own name, but the kids get the mother's name (or the DB's name if there is just one) and are in her House.
