  • The Emerald Lotus Tournament-Signups!

Pretty soon, a new edition of Exalted will be coming out. I sometimes have some troubles mastering new crunch, and back when we did the Burn Legend Tournament on the forums it gave me a really good feel for how the system worked. I'm hoping to do something similar here. A bit of fun, a bit of learning new combat tactics and seeing how they work out against each other.

If you want in, make me a character. You Will Need:
    • One paragraph of backstory, including the sort of fighting style you want this character to have!
    • One paragraph of visual character description. Please don't bother with reference images, you can give me those if you win!
    • Don't worry about stats: you'll do those once 3E actually drops, right now I just wanna set up tournament brackets.
So here's how this thing is gonna go.
    • Mortals only. I'm trying to get a feel for how combat tactics in the new system work without the magic. No charms/sorcery, please.
    • Also, no artifacts.
    • You'll be fighting on a raised stone dais, square-shaped, about fifty feet across, surrounded by a cheering crowd. Not much scenery for stunt fodder here.
    • You may have up to two weapons.
      • Paired weapons (hookswords, smashfists, iron boots, bow and arrows, etc) only count as one weapon.
      • If you're using arrows or small thrown weapons, you may have up to six shots worth of arrows/knives/chakrams/needles/whatever before you run out of ammo.
    • You may wear whatever armor you see fit.
    • You may use whatever fighting style and whatever combat tactics (including poison, drugs, etc) you like, as long as it's available to mortals.
      • Poison/drugs count as one of your two weapon choices, though!
    • No pets. You fight alone.
    • Your character must have a reason to be in the city of Wisdom Anointed As a Sapphire in An Teng, and to want to participate in a local martial arts school's monthly tournament.
    • You lose a match, you're out. You win, you advance.
    • If you kill your opponent before Round 3, you need to use the social system to persuade an NPC referee that it was accidental or be disqualified. I wanna learn the new the social system too!
      • For Round 3 and any further rounds, lethal matches are allowed.
    • Contestants will have one day of healing downtime between matches. If you've got injuries you can't heal in a day...tough luck going into the next match!

Finalists (how many is gonna depend on how many finalists we actually have) will get quick character portraits from me, and if their creators wish they will show up briefly as contestants in the Emerald Lotus Tournament in God-Kicking Boot. The winner gets to actually have a brief fight scene depicted in the comic, either against Boot or another major character.

If you're interested, sign up. Signups close once 3E drops, at which point I'll put up a bracket and the contestants will fight for my amusement (probably by IM or something and then we'll post the combat here, for the sake of speed). Combats will be adjudicated by myself or by another neutral party. If somebody drops out, their opponent gets a free pass up to the next match.

Sounds interesting, hopefully I'll be able to find time to participate.

Should we PM you with our characters?

Very neat idea, here. ^_^ And very cool of you to put such a prize on the line. I'll have to think of a character to pitch into this.

I presume "mutation" Merits* are kosher, should one wish to play a beastfolk or some approximation of a Wyld mutant, godblood, sorcerously enchanted mortal, etc.? If so, would natural weapons or natural venom/poison count against the weapon choice limit?

      * For reference, below are the Merits that Holden has so far teased in here (noting that there are more than 30 others in the book). Presuming no cuts were forced in layout, of course.

No, but I’ll cherry-pick a few, since the thread hasn’t had anything juicy in a while. Let’s see——

      Random excerpts:

      Ambidextrous
      Artifact
      Boundless Endurance
      Command
      Demesne
      Direction Sense
      Followers
      Hideous

      Manse
      Mentor
      Pain Resistance
      Retainers
      Tempered by the Elements
      Claws/Fangs/Hooves/Horns
      Extra Limbs
      Poisoned Body
      Subtlety
      Thaumaturgist
      Venomous

That leaves 30 more to discover when the book comes out. At least, in Chapter Four… heh heh heh.

This sounds very interesting. Although I probably won't use her directly, I actually made up a mortal martial artist (when she used weapons, it was two swords) in preparation for my backstory for Ex3 back in 2013 (Her adventures were my NaNo that year). Of course, as it was backstory, by "zero year" she's in her early 80's, so for this tournament, I might want to create an identical granddaughter...

Need to think about this in a little more detail.

Sounds interesting. I'm probably going to watch, but I don't think I'll be submitting a character.

Upon some thought, I've decided I'll leave applications open until a week after 3e drops. Give people who get the rules and wanna test out an idea that inspires them a chance to get in on this.

In terms of weapons..I've been thinking of this in context of a martial arts tournament, so I didn't consider natural weapons like claws or teeth or venomous spit...I don't want this whole thing to be beast men, but I don't wanna outlaw them completely? I think I'm gonna have to count natural attacks beyond basic human ability as one of your weapon choices. Stone Boot's stone boots count, after all, even though they're her prosthetic feet and she can't walk without them.

By "3e drops", do you mean for backers or officially? Because there could be some time between those, given that backer proofreading feedback is to be gathered and implemented.

For the backers. Once I have that PDF, I want to get to playing Exalted with it as soon as humanly possible! Changes after the backer PDF drops are mostly gonna be minor editing, clarifying, and indexing issues. I doubt implementation of those changes is going to seriously impact mortal combat at this late juncture.

I honestly didn't even consider that people might not have it once the backer PDF is out. I figured once that PDF drops, it's gonna be leaked all over the internet inside of ten minutes and everyone who wants them is gonna have the rules they need to build a character.

So with End of Summer looking like a real possibility for the arrival of Exalted, I thought I'd finish up my entry as best I can with not actually having the book yet:

Itzal Altani - Emissary of Five Shadowed Mountain Style

Itzal Altani is the granddaughter of a dynast-born mortal who fled to the threshold and changed her name when her family made a fatal political blunder. Over time, Altani’s grandmother Kala eventually settled at a village in the summer mountains and focused her considerable martial arts training into forming her own martial art - Five Shadowed Mountain style, so named because it borrowed (and was therefore a “shadow”) of five different styles.* When Kala decided the style was ready, she taught it to her children, and then her grandchildren. Altani’s uncle, the current grandmaster of the school and the style, has sent out pairs of Kala’s grandchildren to test the style against other martial arts by entering tournaments throughout creation. So Altani and her cousin Kirat were sent to the Southwest, taking jobs mostly as guild caravan guards and other traveling escorts, though Altani would rather have just lived off the land. Now they find themselves in the city of Wisdom Anointed as a Sapphire. Altani won the coin toss, and so she will be entering this tournament while Kirat watches from the sidelines. She hopes he will keep his flirtations to a minimum, as she doesn’t expect to be in any condition to pull his ass out of a fight with an angry husband when the tournament is over.

                    * - Officially, Five Shadowed Mountain style is a bit of a blend between Snake, Ebon Shadow, Steel Devil, White Reaper and Five Dragon, but for purposes of testing the rules, I’ll be happy to consider it a Snake variant that uses Kama instead of Hook Swords.

Altani is slightly above average height and has a well defined, wirey tone, with lightly tanned skin, brown yes, and dark brown hair that she keeps in a high ponytail, almost like a top-knot. She usually wears a blue-green sleeveless wrap shirt over loose black trousers that are gathered at the ankle, and simple black slippers when she’s not wearing boots for travel. For combat in the ring, she adds a simple leather back and breast -kind of armor and leather bracers. She doesn't need to bind her chest much before a match, being notably under-endowed in that area, though not quite to the point where she's easily mistaken for a boy.

                    I'm a Woman, I'm a GM. Of course I'm Evil.

Yeah, shield counts as one weapon. I figure the guys who gave us 2.5 and the "shields are a weapon with high defense and a shield bash stat line" probably gave us shields as weapons in 3e. People wanna play Captain America, after all, and I wanna play my guy with two shields so he can backhand two people at once.

                            Total: 12 - and counting!

Let me know as more combatants show themselves.
