  • Science Fiction Dreaming

Since Science Fiction could be considered to be the dreams of the future, I was thinking that the Deep Dreaming would contain Realms that would correlate to the most popular series in Science Fiction. I was wondering if anyone else had explored a similar idea in their Changeling games? I just think that it would be great for Changelings to be able to travel to a Realm in a galaxy far, far away...

I've definitely used science fiction imagery and sci-fi inspired plots in Changeling. Both versions, actually.

I ran a year long LARP called Millennial Sunrise that was Changeling the Dreaming as a Sci-Fi story. It was heavily inspired by the anime Summer Wars and Post-cyberpunk fiction.

Usually when I'm mashing up Changeling with science fiction it tends to be of the pulp and B-movie variety.

Hm, is there any particular reason not to have science fiction as a defining feature of Changeling? I know that Changeling tends to focus on fantasy, but I would think that horror and science fiction have been as responsible for dreams and nightmares as any form of fantasy. I think that there are just as many children who dream of being Jedi or flying an X-Wing as there are who dream of being knights and facing monsters. And the dreams do not need to be mutually exclusive.

Science fiction is the folk tales and epic sagas of the modern world, whether it is Akira or Star Wars. Why should a Boggun not be able to forge a chimerical lightsaber? Why should there not be chimerical Ewoks and Wookies fighting chimeric Stormtroopers in the forests of Earth?

For me it's just a matter of what the expectations are for that particular game. Everybody has to be on board with kit-bashing the genres or there's going to be some whiplash.

It also depends on who all you're interacting with in the context of the game world. If it's all other Changelings then throwing in some sci-fi probably won't be a big deal unless it's an overwhelming presence. Shit be whimsical like that. You can probably get away with it around Mages as well, since their genre also explicitly includes both fantasy and science fiction. With others though, particularly Vampire, Wraith, Demon, etc. adding sci-fi will make Changeling that much more dissonant, so it's probably best to zero in on more gritty urban fantasy.

              That's what's great about Changeling, it's flexible.

So, what would be the effect of a chimerical blaster or lightsaber? Especially since Changelings can make them do real damage for a scene by 'Calling on the Wyrd'.

I found it quite helpful to rely on my long, happy relationship with science fiction, dark fantasy, and horror for inspiration while I was writing. Just my 2 dross.

Same effect as a gun or a sword, just re-skinned. Don't overcomplicate it.

Well, maybe counting as fire damage. It can get a little complicated if it fits.

Sure, if you want to make lazerbeemz do agg that's not a hard sell. I just like to be mindful of of damage creep.

Lightsabers can cut through tanks. If it comes from the Dreaming, it will have the capabilities assigned to it by the Dreaming. I think a compromise though would be for it to deal 8 lethal damage, but it ignores all soak, artificial or natural, mundane or supernatural, and it destroys any non-magical weapon that it parries or that attempts to parry it.

I was always a little disappointed that way back in the day Changeling didn't do a sourcebook about science fiction and its various incarnations as inspiration for Glamour, dreamers and places in the Dreaming. Classic space opera, Art-Deco pulp, Victorian science fantasy, the Futurism movement, Japanese anime, 1950s chrome-plated scifi, 80s cyberpunk, and so on. How each of the kiths and some of the houses fit into it, new sociopolitical factions, new powers and trinkets, assorted chimera, and other fun things.

What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly. That is the first law of nature.

That does not mean that Changeling fans cannot embrace Horror and Science Fiction within the Dreaming. There should be a chimerical Death Star orbiting the Earth where hundreds of millions of children have dreamed it. There should be chimerical slashers stalking the neighborhoods of America and Freddy should be waiting in your dreams. Chimerical mecha, capable of taking out platoons of tanks, should be waiting for Changeling pilots willing to give them the Glamour to bring them into reality through the Wyrd.
