  • Changeling 2039: An altered Resurgence War Setting

    Basically this is an alternate history of the WoD. It diverges from the standard WoD history in 1878 when a Fiona Sidhe Prince, Aneurin Caron ap Elwyn, one of the few remaining Fiona Sidhe that survived since the Shattering, was rescued from an attack from members of the recently founded Technocracy. Aneurin who had been depressed for decades was brought out of his Banal state by the rescue and the companionship of the young American Hermetics who saved him. (In our world these House Luxor Hermetics weren't welcomed to visit England and thus never rescued Aneurin.)

    Going to America with his new allies Aneurin, a powerful Fae Magician, started to teach the local American Changelings many arts they had lost. By 1920, all the Arts in the 20th Anniversary CtD book were well known in North America. The Presence of Aneurin brought out a new thoughtfulness on how the Changelings governed themselves, Anarchist Collectives replaced the old Royal courts. This unleashed strange forces in the Dreaming.

    Aneurin Caron ap Elwyn, because of his connections to House Luxor became allied with both the Order of Hermes and the Sons of Ether. He started musing young scientists spurned by the Technocracy. By the 1950's this led to a young scholar coming at the question of fusion power generation from an odd angle. His experiments, in spite of Technocracy interference showed great promise. By 1965 his fusors has achieved Breakeven! Well before the Oil Shocks several major research programs where working on commercial fusion reactors.

    Aneurin, in his studies, foresaw the Resurgence, and its cost. He resolved that the feckless royal fools that betrayed the Commoners and their sworn duties wouldn't have an easy victory. So he sought allies and prepared a vast working.

    Several events aided the Prince. First, with the Commoner Changelings largely dropping courts as a system of organization, and patents of nobility being largely forgotten, the Dreaming no longer hungered for True Kings. The old order was less bitter in the Long 1960s, less scared of change. Among other things this turned the 1968 Presidential election about one percent toward the Democrats, which was much more than Nixon's victory margin. Humphrey became president and sought to build bridges with the forces of change without dumping middle America. The Democrats continued to embrace the cultural changes but did not dump the Unions or the working man. Second, the Fae arts that the Prince returned to the Changelings brought them a new connection with the Dreaming. This led to a reduced preference of the Dreaming for Noble rule. Third, the revitalization of the Counsel of the Nine Traditions gave the Prince new allies with rich insights that gave his charms added force and subtlety.

    When the Moon Landing occurred and the Trods were opened the Prince had already prepared the paths. The Arcadian Sidhe were diverted into a realm were Time flowed at the rate of one second to one hour relative to outside time. Thus a day in this realm was close to ten years on the Earth. The Arcadian Sidhe did escape the trap, after seventy years of Earth time.

    The world they found was different....

    Basically the Arcadian Sidhe are returning to a world were they aren't as powerful, relative to the Commoners, as in 1969. The lack of the Arcadian Sidhe has had several effects. First, there's more Glamour and less Banality. The Arcadian Sidhe found that the Dreams of the world they landed in didn't suit them or their needs. They ravaged those who's dreams seemed threatening to them. Mainly those of the Working class mortals they interacted with. Coming from the political world of the 14th century, dreams that favored democracy, social justice, material social progress, and individual human rights, scared them for the same reasons they would have confused and scared 14th century humans. Without the Arcadian Sidhe, or the Oil shocks (the Fusors of Aneurin's protégée meant that OPEC never got off the ground as most of the oil producing nations were terrified of losing their market more quickly by making oil more expensive) the basic compromise between Capitalism and Democracy in the West wasn't changed. Unions, Social Welfare, and stable living conditions for the working class, remained high priorities in all mainstream political parties. The Center-Left remained overwhelmingly dominant.

    Well before the Space Program, Aneurin had set up new forces to promote democracy in many lands. Although the Syndicate came to loathe Wolf Ladejinsky the Prince pulled strings to promote his ideas and his highly effective land reforms. Because Aneurin promoted Ladejinsky's mission in Vietnam, the South Vietnamese government embraced the Land Reforms they fought in our history. As in our history, were Ladejinsky style land reforms occurred, the Viet Cong were driven out by the local farmers. Only in this world these reforms came in 1963 not 1972, so the Vietnam war fizzled out before it became important outside of France and Vietnam.

    ​Ladejinsky's triumph in Vietnam made his style of Land Reform fashionable among the powerful. Much like Norman Borlang's Green Revolution, Ladejinsky's ideas were the received wisdom. In fact Ladejinsky was popular enough that he was able to aide Borlaug. In our world Borlaug was kept out of Africa, between Ladejinsky's championing Borlaug, and the simple fact that the African nations themselves were more powerful without the economic crisis forced on them by the oil shocks, Borlaug was allowed to bring the Green Revolution to Africa. By the 1990s Africa was in full swing industrialization and democratization.

    Because the Oil Shocks and the right-wing betrayals of the working classes never happened, neither the visions of the Counsel of the Nine Traditions nor those of the Technocracy have been rejected. The wonders of Spaceflight bred a renewed mysticism and a new utopianism, but a utopianism made more pragmatic but a canny awareness of the failures of the USSR and Mao's China.

    ​Also, since the Arcadian Sidhe used so much Glamour to sustain dreams utterly alien in the late 20th century and to force those dreams to the fore, they, in a way, imposed a combination of Ravaging and Rhapsody on the Autumn World weakening it. The Dreaming allowed this because it favored the "Rightful Kings." Without the Dreaming's full favor the Arcadian Sidhe couldn't do this again. So they would be able to force their Dream. They'll need to fit themselves to this world.

    The world of 2039 looks like the Jetsons, well more restrained, but the Jazz music is as lively and fun.;-)

      Character creation in this setting has some changes.

      First, add two to any PC's or NPC's Glamour. This represents both the less Banal nature of this world of 2039 allowing the Commoners and Autumn Sidhe to develop Glamour pools more easily and recent arrival of the Arcadian Sidhe in the Autumn world.

      Second add ten freebie points to all characters. The reason is basically the same. The Commoners got to develop more of themselves and the Arcadian Sidhe haven't lost it yet.

      Third High Glamour Changelings age more slowly in the Autumn world in this setting. If a Changeling's Glamour is higher than their Banality, subtract their Banality from their Glamour. Then subtract this number from ten. This gives you how many years they age a decade. Thus id a PC's or NPC's Banality is five and their Glamour is Nine, that means you subtract four from ten to get six. This means that this Changeling ages only six years for every ten they live. If a Wilder discovered their fae nature in 1989 at the age of 14, in 2039 they'd be 64 years old but they would look like they were 44 and in fact they'd be physiologically 44 years old. The Merit Fearie Eternity is unchanged, but still a bargain.

      Fourth, when testing any commoner's or Autumn Sidhe's willpower to resist Banality or Bedlam, add three to their dice pool. This represents the fact that the Changelings are stronger in this world.

      Fifth give the Arcadian Sidhe and any Arcadian Commoners with them five Arts and Seven Realms. This represents the simple fact they've just come from Arcadia and have more magic skills because it is easier to learn fae magic there.

      Sixth, the Arcadian Sidhe can take Temporal Sense as a skill. This skill is found on page 74 of Nobles the Shinning Host. I'll post the whole skill later.

        The basic events driving this setting is the return of the Arcadian Sidhe. As in the normal game they'd be unable to understand that the Commoners A) have rights, B) don't need the Arcadian Sidhe or their hierarchies, and C) look down on the Arcadian Sidhe as the creeps that ran out on them and left them to die. No the Arcadian Sidhe want to return to their former status, wealth, lands, and privileges.....NOW!!!

        However, the Dreaming isn't as favorable to them as it was. Seventy years of changes went toward a far more egalitarian world. Sure much of the Dreaming favors the Arcadian Sidhe, but nowhere nearly as strongly as before and with nothing like the former unanimity. In other words, this fight isn't fixed. The Arcadian Sidhe, who were actually far more powerful than the Commoners, it was only their disorientation that slowed them down, now face Commoners far better equipped to fight and win.

          Feel free to comment and kibitz.

          ​I'll add a couple of new Kiths to this setting. Jongleurs chimeras based on show people that have, like the Wolpertinger, become full Changelings, and Lutin French Changelings with an affinity for light, that were driven out of existence in the Resurgence wars on our Earth, but recovered and thrive in this world.

            The French teacher in me can't resist, the correct spelling would be Lutin. 😉 But nitpicking aside, it's a really cool concept and some fun potential.

                For French Canada/Quebec I was aware of it as I'm French Canada living in Ottawa, Ontario, but I did not know about Detroit. However, since Detroit/Windsor was the location of the 4th city of the Nouvelle-France, it makes sense.

                it's actually pretty and, and good give us some fun scenario and story sends around a Lutin freehold (or several) in Detroit.

                Now the big question that remains: Did they made it to Louisiana?

                  Beyond my knowledge. Does that swamp tree goblin thing that Kolchak fights in "The Spanish Moss Murders," one Père Malfait , have any existence in folklore beyond being a name given to the devil?

                    Some notes on the other supernaturals in the WoD.

                    Vampires

                    The world of 2039 is a pure misery for Vamps. Wide spread democratization and industrialization creates a world with fewer corners for them to hide dead bodies in. The Sabbat and the Anarchs are particularly bitter. Vampires are stuck maintaining the Masquerade or else. The world the Vamps live in is the dark underbelly of this Jetsons/Star Trek world, but too much light and air gets in for their comfort. Take the Homeless problem. There are plenty of descent shelters and practical housing programs in this world. Those sleeping rough are a vanishingly small number of people and their problems are taken seriously. No easy blood points there.

                    Elder Vampires are mainly in shock or fury and neonates spend most of their time navigating the fallout. Vampires are weaker than they've been in centuries.

                    Werewolves and Fera

                    The Weaver is seen as more of an issue than the Wyrm in this world. New technologies are generally ecofriendly or people are working on how to clean up the mess. Thanks to Vertical Farming and similar tech, most food is grown very near the people who eat it. Biotechnology makes sewage treatment plants far safer and more effective. Rivers are cleaner, the seas are healthier, clean air is the norm, outside of cities, the world looks pristine. Vertical farming also means rural populations are far smaller and less politically important. Wilderness has grown to take up the evacuated space.

                    The Fera including the Garou like the turn things have taken. They'll likely stay out of the Resurgence wars.

                    Mages

                    Mages are fairly quiet in this world. The Traditions are busy working behind the scenes fitting into the cracks in the technocratic paradigm and widening them. The Void Engineers and the other tech centered conventions are busy with the solar system and the beginnings of interstellar flight (the Sons of Ether brilliantly rattled everyone's cages by letting the secret of fTL travel out early and the Hermetics and Virtual Adepts made sure it couldn't be put back into hiding). The NWO is mainly focused on keeping the Syndicate in line and is still bitter with them over Pentex. The Crafts feel secure in their shadows.

                    Wraiths

                    The generally quieter world of 2039 has fewer Wraiths and less disturbance of the dead. Wraiths are less of an influence in this world and, because people got to lead less painful lives, there are simply fewer Wraiths as well. Specters are even less common, both in raw numbers and in proportion to the wraith population as a whole.

                    Demons and Hunters

                    The Demons haven't shown up. The world clearly isn't messed up enough for them to do so. Similarly, whatever called forth the Hunters hasn't been moved to action either.

                      This go a little to smoothly for my liking, and not a fan of a universal boost of Changelings but I understand why you want to go that way. What would happen then if the Antes Awaken? Even Utopia would be shaken and disjarred.

                        Once the Resurgence War starts things will get dark. Much of the light (on the surface at least) is because there was no Resurgence War.

                        Moreover, because the sides are better matched, this Resurgence War will be nastier and more bitter.

                          I mean it sounds really stacked against the returning Sidhe. And by this settings logic why weren't all the Sidhe even in the normal setting having such a boost in character gen, after all every Arcadian Sidhe is arriving to the world as if they are fresh from Arcadia.

                            Do remember that although the Dreaming doesn't exclusively favor the Arcadian Sidhe, it still prefers them somewhat. Add to that the treasures and the alliances with the native American Fae. The Arcadians are still scary powerful.

                              Good point, I forgot about the Nunnehi alliance, though I wonder if it would change considering its a few more generations since the bloody 1800's history Commoners had stealing glades.
