  • On Squires and pre-Shattering Commoners.

Are Squires considered to be nobles (as in, officially part of the nobility)? Are they considered to be lords? C20 (page 62) explains that all lords of Households hold title of minimum Knight and are almost all at least a Baron. When Seif was ennobled, he became a knight. Does this mean any kith could become attain the rank of Squire/Esquire even before the Shattering (if, albeit, under extreme difficulty)?

If we can compare them to real world nobility, Squires are people who were being groomed to become members of the nobility. After a training period of roughly 10 years, they would be granted Knighthood, which was the lowest rank of nobility back in those days.

So simply put, a Squire is not technically a noble at the time, but they will eventually become one after a suitable period of service.
