  • what was the point of the psychopomps job?

so..apparently the lack of constant challenge by the avatar was a bad thing.. yet the ixoi found out that" with psychopomps running out they needed to look onto themselves for moral direction"

also what does"directed the avatars to mages " even means given the setting? people are born with avatars. everyone has one. you don't gain an avatar by awakening it merely well...awakens lol

Due to the appearance of the Entelechy, resonating forward and backward through time, psychopomps manifested.

People are born with Avatars regardless, but the purpose of the psychopomps was either to specifically guide the proper Avatars to people who would one day Awaken as mages (which, considering they manifested partly because of a Time ripple, might make their job easier) or they generally guided Avatars to all humans, whether or not they'd Awaken.

Given that, for the purposes of Mage, the specifics of un-Awakened Avatars are generally irrelevant (they're not Awake enough to be able to converse or do magic), it's not inaccurate to just say that psychopomps directed Avatars to mages.

Psychopomps matched the personalities of the Avatar with the mage so well that the net effect was somewhat counter-productive: the Avatar wanted what the mage wanted, so the Avatar's voice was indistinguishable from the mage's own. Mages forgot they had an Avatar entirely, q.v. the "Fount" in Dark Ages: Mage. As a result, they fell to hubris and the acquisition of mundane power rather than enlightenment.

By the Renaissance, psychopomps were becoming less frequent, Avatars were left to find their own mages, and as a result were not as well-matched to the mage. They could confront the mage and argue with them, forcing them to question their own decisions. In the case of a strong Avatar, they might drag the mage proverbially kicking and screaming to enlightenment.

Psychopomps' role was to guide the "right" Avatar to the right person. They were not responsible for the existence of Avatars, merely the proper matching of personalities.

Think of psychopomps like an optimized dating service: It's their job to find the perfect match. Without a dating service people might still fall in love, and it might be a good match or a bad one, but never the perfect matches the dating service could arrange.

I thought I saw somewhere on Revised a sidebar saying that the sleeping avatars create the Consensus, so it may not be so useless, but Im not 100% sure, I'll need to check it out

From Ascension: "The Entelechy was the summoning rite prophesied by the Psychopomps. The Khwaja al-Akbar was more than the massed Avatars of the refugees. It was an emanation from the future — a future when Ascension had been achieved and the Cycle of Creation, including the Sphere of Telos, was realized. But as soon as it touched the imperfect Consensus, it fragmented across the past and future. Partaking of a fraction of the supreme intelligence, these fragments manifested as the Psychopomps who would contact the Ixoi’s ancestors and guide mages for millennia to come."

So it's a rite that summoned an emanation from an Ascended future. The emanation - the Khwaja al-Akbar - is what gave rise to the Batini.

basically an ancient entity that was summoned by the batini in the 5 century bc it could not exist in the world however. it shattered and its remnants radiated backwards and forward in time(more or less 2000 years to be precise)

right i know all that but what does right person mean? my point is,a baby has no personality. unless they are capable of very powerful divination of course. plus people's personas can and do change.
also(while not explicitly stated) it's heavily implied that the stronger the avatar the stronger the propability of awakening anyway. which is why the vast majority of sleepers are said to possess tiny (rating 0) avatars
