  • Mage: The Ascension - Rhapsody

    Hello Folks,

So, for the record, I have never played or ran Mage, or even read the book for the record.

One of the players in the Chronicles of Darkness game I run, is a HUGE Mage fan, and with talking to him for a little bit I decided I wanted to take up the challenge of running a Mage game. I ordered Mage 20th and just got it in the mail. While I was waiting for it, I was working on a setting and theme for the story and came up with this. A story that takes place in Haight-Ashbury of San Francisco around 1966 and so, and will deal with the Summer of Love, the weird cults such as the Process Church, the Manson Family, Drugs (LSD and the darker side such a heroine), The Hells Angels, and how it all came crumbling down. I especially want to focus on the drive that led so many people to the area then.

    I read a quote from an article that really sold me on the setting;

"Yet the phenomenon washed over America like a tidal wave, erasing the last dregs of martini sipping Mad Men era types, and ushering in a series of liberations and awakenings that irreversibly changed our way of life."

I have a couple of history books dealing with the setting, but also am inspired by Clive Barker books such as Imagica, and The Great and Secret Show.

One other thing is I plan to have NPCs based of, or being real life figures who had an impact then, except for musicians. Music/Musicians will always be more of a back drop and part of the setting.

I can wait to crack open Mage 20th this weekend, and start working on the mechanics.

I thought I would share on here to get some ideas, or to kind of give updates to where I am going and seeing what you pros think of it.

Sounds great. Any idea what your players are going to be like?

Right now the players who expressed interest in the game that already play in my other games are 1 Mage fanatic, 1 who is familiar, and two who are now reading Mage 20th.

I just have very brief overview/conceptual conversations with them about what they may want to play. Mind you, I told them not to feel they need to play a Hippie at all in the game.

The fanatic (I mean that is an awesome good way), said he was thinking maybe a Yoga instructor who is Akashayana/ Akashic Brotherhood

One of the newer players is thinking about playing a Virtual Adept who believes in the "time is a flat circle" Rust belief system.

The other two are excited, but aren't sure yet. I usually give a heads up to the guys who play in my game a few months in advanced so they can start brainstorming.

BTW skimming through the book I saw the picture of Jim Morrison with the lizard on his shoulder, friggin love it lol.

BTW for the record, I'm not a Hippie, nor saying there is anything wrong with them...except for the music maybe lol

A VA in a 60s setting sounds fascinating. Instead of classic Matrix hackers they look more like computer pioneers, mathematicians, and futurists. Also, given your setting you have a unique opportunity. The VAs only joined the Traditions in 1961, they aren't fully trusted yet. In fact, their probationary period actually ends sometime in 1966, so it might not have happened yet at the start of the game. The VA character might actually have been part of the split and still know people in the Technocracy.

That was actually something he stated, and that's why he got excited for the concept. He said he probably is a heavy pot smoker trying to numb himself with the memories of some of the stuff he did with the Technocracy. It sounds like a really interesting concept.

It would be amusing to play a suburban white collar desk worker who awakens on the spot there. One day, he's just living his life, hoping to find some meaning in it all, and then he walks his regular route through San Francisco and he can suddenly feel the minds of everyone there or something like that.

Yeah, its going to be pretty fun. I find that each game I run I try to go for a certain feel with running it, and with this one I want it to be very mind blowing and almost in a way like Jardowsky was going to do Frank Herberts Dune. I don't know if I can pull it off, but I can try.

Thanks! I hope I can pull it off. I think it will be my biggest challenge as a storyteller I have faced but either way it'll be fun to try.

A 60s era Virtual Adept would probably employ telecommications tech for Correspondence, since Al Gore hasn't invented the Internet yet. Landline phones, radios and radio waves, broadcast towers, television, etc.
