  • Roleplaying Zeus or Hades as your totem.

I am trying to think of some good inspiration for having a Greek god as a totem. What would it be like to be a permanent worshipper and what would your responsibilities be like? Also, what abilities might you gain?

For starters, the original worshipers of Zeus saw the god primarily as a weather deity. They built him altars and monuments on mountaintops as close to the sky as possible. Offerings of wine were made in hopes that Zeus would bring rain in times of drought. An oracle for Zeus interpreted the sounds of wind in the branches of sacred oak trees as messages from Zeus.

Dedicating tall structures in high places to the Glory of the mighty Zeus and giving offerings of sacrificial animals, cakes, and wine (depending on where in Greece you were) seemed to be the thing to do.

Zeus was also supposed to be a champion of justice and tradition, particularly the rights of hospitality. These must be a big thing for Zeus worshipers.
(The respect from host to guest. The host must be hospitable to the guest and provide him/her with food, drink, bath and gifts when they leave. It is not polite to ask questions until the guest has finished the meal provided to them. The respect from guest to host. The guest must be courteous to the host and not be a burden. The guest should also provide a gift if they have one)

Animals sacred to Zeus were the Eagle and the bull. Plants sacred to Zeus were the Holm Oak and Olive tree.

Looking at the Scion book. Awareness, Command, Integrity, Presence, Politics, & Thrown were under his purview. In Mage these would probably be Alertness, Awareness, Intimidation, Leadership, Politics, & Athletics

As for Hades, he was honored in burial rites wherein there was mourning and the deceased was given coin so he or she could go to the river Styx and pay the ferryman for passage to the lands of the dead, and in necromantic ceremonies involving communion with the ghosts of the dead. Supposedly, ghosts were attracted by offerings of blood from sacrificed animals or contacted through psychedelic trips to the underworld near (or in) caves (gates to the underworld). Worshipers also pounded the ground with their fists so that Hades could hear their prayers.

Apparently, black animals (usually sheep) were common sacrifices to Hades and he vehemently rejects human sacrifice. Blood sacrifices were dripped into a pit in the ground as the person making the offering averted their face.

While stern, unyielding, and without pity, he was still considered to be a champion of Justice.
He was the god of the underworld and also of the wealth that comes from under the Earth.

Scion has his Abilities as Academics, Command, Occult, Presence, Stealth, Thrown In Mage these would probably be Alertness, Awareness, Intimidation, Leadership, Academics, Occult, Esoterica, & Stealth.

What is your Paradigm and how does your character see them? In the Umbra you could just as readily meet the most Homer of Zeuses or the far more Proper Jupiter or even a Kirby Space God. So is your character of a lost order that's handed things down? a reconstructionist?

Hollow One, with a blend of Hermetic and Dream Speaker for a paradigm. He wants to be a Necromancer and he wants to be a bridge between the living and dead.

Does he live in his mother's basement?

That's not honoring Zeus, it's competing with him for women!

I guess the original Hades cult would be apt, though you'll probably have to come up with a lot of the specifics and update it as you please. There isn't as much material on the topic as there could be but you can find useful tidbits here and there online.

One main advantage for you is that your regular summoning of the spirits of the dead can also count as your obligation to Hades (although these should probably have some sort of schedule)

Lol, he lives in what is outwardly a condemned 12 story apartment building. It's his cabal's chantry.

Maybe you could look for a path to the Greek underworld and try for Achilles style invulnerability with the River Styx, get some spirits to give you the water of Lethe, or maybe acquire something like Hades Cap of Invisibility, or his cornucopia, or maybe one of his treasure keys.

So he's generally a reconstructionist. He has to piece together his Gods from the stories he he has and what he thinks makes sense. Rather than going with origional looks I'd try to see how Zeus and Hades might be incorporated into modern things. Entering the underworld via elevator for example.

F-15s as his sacred eagles, delivering thunderbolts in the form of Sidewinder missiles and a Vulcan gatling gun?

Make sure to use Mind/Prime rotes to keep people ignoring the building and its occupants. Since you guys are Hollow Ones, throw in some Entropy to make them simply look the other way by chance.
