  • Alternate Traditions and Technocracy Setting Ideas

Sorry basically I was saying I was tossing an idea In my head where during a chronicle the players bridge the tellurium with an alternate timeline were the world is similar but different and they meet that worlds Technocracy and Traditions.

Fee free to toss ideas on this setting or your own idea of a mirror tellurium with 9 or 10 member traditions/technocracy and a 5/6 member other faction. You can even mix it up and make the Nephandi or maurader faction be the ones with multiple splats.

    Shard Settings

    Alternate Traditions

    Force
    Psychopomps of Elsewhere
Tradition of Technoshamans, they focus on the directionless hypothetical location found within the interaction of humans through the medium of technology. They work to pacify and placate the local spiritual ecosystems of Urban locations as well as the wider ecosystems of humanities subconscious. Sacred songs and shapes invoke the spirits and gods within technology, they are masters of using the unseen world to call upon visible effects. They are said to include spirits, chimera and alien thoughtforms into their ranks.

    Matter
    Kings of the Underworld
The Newest Tradition, they were formed from a union of various crime families from every corner of the world that adhered to strict ancestor worship. Once a thorn in side of the Technocracy and Traditions they filled a vacuum in the Council by absorbing the pragmatic and materialistic remnants of a past tradition of Alchemists known as the Rebis. They combine ruthless avarice, the secret blessings of the ancestors, and the secrets of transmutation all bound into an ancient code of iron. They bolster their ranks with loyal mindless remnants of fallen enforcers, and guided by a ghostly council of ancestors.

    Prime
    Messengers of the Galgalim
A tradition dating back to the secret final days of Moses, Messengers safeguard the secret names and shapes of angels from mortal memory all the while forming and steering the inheritors of the secrets of Moses, Solomon, and Enoch through history. Messengers have steered theurgic research and teachings from King David’s court, to ecstatic rituals of sufi mystics, and the surviving Cathars, and the nascent mormons. While they have evolved theurgy from a number of sources Kabbalah has held their most primal and ancient secrets passed by the burning and inhuman angels. Some burning and bright angelic manifestations serve as supernal guardians of their holy temples and impossibly swift messengers.

    Time
    Prophets of Continuum
Appearing unannounced to the forming Council of Traditions the Prophets of Continuum are an uncanny and paradoxical group of awakened strange impossible devices and alien rituals. The Prophets present themselves as a unified Tradition but internally they are divided into two philosophies concerning their origins. The Pilgrims of Yesterday believe the beginnings of their Tradition lies with an ancient possibly prehuman tradition from the literal dawn of time, some whisper even from a past Universe. The Voyagers of Tomorrow counter this claim with the belief that their esoteric and refined disciplines come from the distant future, perhaps even avoiding the End of Creation by journeying into prehistory to help humanity along a superior path. Regardless the Prophets seem to be a truly ancient Tradition with evidence pointing towards origins entwined with lost utopias of Atlantis, Mu, and Agharta. Before they revealed themselves to the Traditions they numbered in the few, being a collection of hermit sages with several sleeper acolytes in isolated mountain peaks and mist shrouded valleys. Their mystics use ecstatic trances, rare herbs, advanced meditation and medicinal understanding and unknown devices of geomantic and crystalline providence.

    Correspondence
    Numeronomists, Keepers of Pi
The Keepers of Pi have a somewhat complicated history that earned them the ire of many interesting groups. Their many origins are like tributaries into the great river of their current state. Ancient sacred geometry were guided from generation in the shadow by the Prophets of Continuum leading to the education of Imhotep the deified earliest founder of a group of high mathematicians and architects that would instruct, collaborate, war with and ultimately fuse with a faction of the Messengers of Galgalim concentrating on gematria as a lens to discover the sacred name of El within the numbers of Pi, and the Greek Cult of Pythagoras and their attempts to realize the Platohedron.

Within the lifetime of Alexander the Conqueror these disparate groups ultimately became one, minus a solid majority of the gematria faction which could not betray their fellow messengers. By the time the Council of Traditions was formed the group made contact with astronomers and mathematicians in Mesoamerica as well as expanding into India, the Middle East and the Courts of the Ming Dynasty. However the Keepers of Pi nearly fractured when a prominent faction known as the Numeronomists sought to divest themselves of the layers of mysticism and the lens of culture and ego. Ultimately the Numeronomists lost a protracted debate/cold war, maintaining a general cohesion of the group with only the most bitter breaking off to join the Order of Reason or offer their services to the Kings of the Underworld.

By the time of the present the Keepers of Pi pioneered the very soul of the machine using their sacred geometry along with the Psychopomps of Elsewhere to lay the foundations of the Digital Web to presage and tame the coming internet. The Keepers of Pi have long had a practice of conceptualizing spirit beings known as Alchemical Intelligences to help them in the calculations.

    Spirit
    House Tremere
Once there was a great and prideful order drawing from the teachings of Thoth, the secrets of Solomon, and all the faces of Mercury. This Order of Hermes believed themselves to possess the wisest and most powerful magi to walk the Earthly Sphere and beyond. However when joining the great Council of 9 Traditions it was revealed they were inexorably entwined with princes of the bottomless pit by the trustworthy and affable Lord Magus Tremere. The combined might of the Council of 9 Tradition, with Tremere reforming his Tradition under the banner of his own house, brought their hammer of will down upon the traitorous bastards of the once great order of Hermes. The survivors fully embraced a number of infernal pacts solidifying their position as a Tradition of Barabbi. To combat the evil the Nephadic brethren represented the Tremere sacrificed safety and grace and embraced the confiscated grimoires and treatise of Solomon from the caches of their brothers and they became a house of demon tamers and Warlocks. The Tremere hold to a position of sacrifice and profess the Traditions owe a great debt to them. To amass soldiers for their endless nightwar the Tremere bind demons and djinn to will. Their masterpiece are constructs known as Gargoyles, unholy bestial flesh stitched together and transmuted to a stonelike solidity and bound with an Infernal spirit fettered by its true name.

    Entropy
    The Shapers of Orlog, Norns
The old ways were fading into obscurity, pagans and heathens conquered, broken and absorbed by the Christgod and the Muhammadans. The Sisters of Wyrd were a fellowship claiming to be the inheritors of the Norns, believing Ragnorak to have begun they entreated their sisters in the mediterranean masters of the skein and children of the Moirae. Smaller covens and crafts drifted from new and old world centering around the leadership of the Sisters of the Wyrd, ordaining themselves as Shapers of Orlog, these Norns believed inevitability and fate was the gods but even mortal plans when tempered by wisdom and insight could stack causality in their favor. Nothing is quite as fatalistic as it seems, Ragnorak has passed, the future is now. Ancient pacts with the primordial spirits and fae beings means the Norns are not just a Tradition of Awakened Mages, there are prominent and equal members among the fae and umbrood, beings known as true Moirae, and Disir are full fledged Norns.

    Life
    Cartographers of Mystery
One of the later seats of the Council of Traditions the Cartographers of Mystery started as the League of Orphans occupying a temporary seat in the Council. But after a generation a common Tradition formed around a creed of optimism and curiosity. When their time came to claim the seat of life the Cartographers thrived from a loose collection of lost individuals to a fellowship of idealists and adventure bound intellectuals with numbers equaling their fellow Traditions. Something about the Victorian era resulted in a swell of orphans, rising in frequency till an abrupt burst coinciding with the splitting of the atom and a return to previous rate of awakenings. Cartographers use medicines and charms developed from orphans the world over blessing their members with transformations and boons allowing their bodies to adapt any environment whether the chill of the benthic abyss to harrowed winds of the Underworld, and even the impossible Deep Umbra. Uncanny and Bygone beings found everywhere from the Hollow Earth, to the far side of the Moon have joined the Cartographers of Mystery, and they have developed diplomatic relationships with other major supernatural creatures such as the Dead and the Changing Breeds.

    Mind
    Namers of Thought
Once known by different names, the Illuminati, the New World Order, or just the Cabal. The Namers of Thought started as viziers and the shadows behind the throne. With the Ascension War on the Horizon and the Council of Traditions and the Order of Reason drawing lines in the sand, the Tradition that would become the Namers of thought eventually through their lot in with Traditions embracing the freedom and possibilities of the future over the promise of security from quantifying and naming the Creation. This Tradition embedded itself in positions of authority, power and influence. They ingrained themselves in the economy of the world cultivating vast wealth and mega conglomerates, they pulled the strings of politicians and administrations attempting to nudge the global consciousness into directions they favor.

And they inspired and corralled the global unconscious with influence over movies and other media. The Namers of thought vacillated between mysticism and ordered rational understanding. They developed psychological paradigms, psycho histories, and projections for the sleeper world. They have plans to eventually usher in wonder into the world by first backing rational thought and science, and slowly peel back the veil of truth and mystery with layers of planned and organised technological and social breakthroughs. They use cutting edge and theoretical sciences as a paradigm but they also embrace radical notions of mind over matter, hypnotism and control over trends in economics and culture through hyper economics and psychohistory. The Namers supplement their forces sleeper agents, mortals enhanced with layers of psychological reinforcement that can be activated to turn them into superhumanly capable and highly predictable/controllable assets. They also cultivate constructed thought beings known as Tulpa.

    Misc
The Covenant of the Untrod, Orphan’s Union, House Ex Misc, Jesters’ Seat
The rabble of ignorant, illiterate, improvisers, the Orphan’s were originally not welcome among the Traditions, for they were beings without Tradition by their very designation as Orphans. Eventually they were Halfway accepted as their numbers and utility in the Ascension War was recognized as a factor that could not be ignored, if they were not put to use for the Traditions then the Order of Reason would find a purpose for them.

So the Council formed the Covenant of the Untrod, giving a lesser seat to mages aligned to the Traditions but without a recognized Tradition Seat. This was first mockingly referred to as the Jester’s Seat, but with that came a blossoming acceptance of the Jester’s role, the Fool may question the King. So Orphans and minor crafts were permitted, given minimal rights and even less respect but with the caveat that they possessed a greater leeway to question authority and act contrary. Eventually with the eradication of the Hermetics House Ex Miscellanea was adopted as the banner under which Orphans and Crafts could be categorized. But more and more by modern times the Orphans swelled to outnumber the disparate craft mages and the legacy of the original House Ex Misc. And in a desperate move before accepting the Kings of the Underworld in the Seat of Matter the Council uplifted the Jesters’ Seat into an official Tenth Seat not dedicated to a specific Sphere. Several Orphans took pride in the Freedom that came with belonging to the Union of Orphans and growing respect shown them, while others felt the responsibility outweighed the price in freedom that being in a Minor Seat provided.

Ultimately normal sleeper family and friends make up the special members of the Covenant of the Untrod. They have an over all larger number of mortals gathered around them to bolster the consensus away from rigidity.

I really like it. The Kings of the Underworld remind me of the Orzhov Syndicate from Magic the Gathering.

Are you sure you are not interpreting things as specifically western as an assumption when things are actually more global like the Kings of the underworld have Yakuza, Triad and Tongs and the psychopomps of Elsewhere are explicitly a shamanistic tradition formed around the world, the Messengers have deep roots in middle eastern mysticism. The prophets of Contimuum have Mu and Argharta as mentioned headquarters, the Numeronomists have deep roots in oriental mathmaticians and merged with mesoamerican scholars, House Tremere and the Norns are noted as western but have expanded by modern times, the Cartographers of Mystery are from all over the globe being a lodge formed from the people’s of both colonial nations and the colonized people, and the Namers of Thought seemed to be formed from ex members of other traditions, and the covenant of the Untrod are explicitly the orphans and small crafts which are likely to be from various cultures in the minority of society.

So that is two out of 10 given Traditions with explicitly Western starting members and 8 out of ten with deep non western foundations. What would be a more suitable number of explicitly non western traditions, 9 or 10 out of 10?

In this setting the Wu Lung were more prominent then the Akashics but a lot of their paradigm joined both Tradition and Technocracy but with them still forming a solid independent group.

Mu is one of the sunken continent/city legends, like Atlantis or Lemuria. Agharta is a mythical city set in the Hollow Earth mythos.

Aghartha was a city Madame Blavatsky's Theosophists claimed exists in the core of the world, I believes the Sons of Ether claimed to have visited it when they explored Hollow Earth, its a lot of times used with Shangri-la, a bastardization of the City of Shamballah, except Argatha claims demons live below the Earth. Hellboy used a storyline about hellish humanoid legions rising from there.

Mu was another idea for a lost continent, it is like a pacific ocean version of Atlantis. I am rather fond of the Exalted's take of calling it Zen-Mu, which brings to mind the idea of the character mu which could (無) for nothing, or () which is the same character of Wu in Sun Wukong the Monkey King meaning comprehension or in his comprehension of nothing or the void, and Zen being meditation. So Zen-Mu in Exalted, the prototype Home of the Primordials before Creation, could mean something like the meditation of nothing or the meditation of comprehension/enlightenment.

But I am hinting at the ideas from a few really out there conspiracy theorists like the Theosophists and a few others like those who believe the Atlanteans were aliens or future men from mars. But these are western ideas of the past lost to the east, they also hint at eastern lost places like Irem of the Pillars, and Peng Lai the islands of Paradise as well as Aztlan the mythical home of the Mexica before they settled in Tenochtitlan.

                        Guardians of Forever
                        Sphere: Time
This (nominally Technocrat) group is of unknown origins and unknown age. They take it as their endless remit to prevent any form of time travel. This include the standard business of travel into the past to save Lincoln or kick Hitler in the nuts. It also includes attempts to see the future through use of mystic magic or even techno-magic. They are rumored to know the future, but wont share the details... but the aggregate of comments, suggestions, mood, and the like collected on the Guardians by others suggests that humans are approaching extinction. And that the Guardians would prefer that than permit any use or manipulation of the Time sphere.
They rarely get invited to parties.

                          Alternate Technocracy
                          Prime
                          Hermetic Sealers
Hermetic Sealers originated from the refugees of the Order of Hermes who avoided the betrayal, framing and Pogrom by House Tremere, unwilling to take up infernalist but still desiring revenge they agreed to shackle themselves to their once enemies in the Order of Reason. They submitted to a subordinate status first as a sub convention of slave mystics, and eventually accepted to full Convention status, though often the subject of contempt and mistrust. They serve the crucial role of the middle men between mysticism and technology. They help codify and sanitize the confiscated wonders and artifacts seized from the Traditions as well as the other reality deviants. By modern times they help steer the secret occult research organizations of various world governments, and they have learned to bolster technology with their heavily policed use of careful sigils and seals that allow them to intercept Extra Dimensional Entities that disturb sleeper interests such as hauntings and demon possessions. They have deputized Extraordinary Citizens taken from Occult Scholars, and organized religious Exorcists from the Vatican and various Rabbinical traditions.

                          Time
                          Forerunners
The Forerunners evolved from a mystic coalition of seers, oracles and prophets simply known as the Forecasters, drawn from Catholic and Orthodox Scholars, but also representatives from Mystics and Astrologers from India and inheritors of Babylonian Astrology hidden among the Timurid dynasty. By the age of Nostradamus they were making efforts to move from mystic trappings to embrace aspects of mathematical projections from Venetian Alchemists among the Reges Mundi and Keepers of Pi who joined their group. They formed the core planners of the Order of Reason and they are the major group responsible for the Timetable, the scheduled plan of when to introduce certain technologies and scientific, sociological and economic advances to mankind.

They specialize translating and adapting discoveries from the entire Technocracy into an infrastructure of uniform and increasingly reliable technologies and Devices. They are dividing a lot of their manpower between expanding the human frontier into the unknowns of Space, the Sea Floor, and below the Earth’s crust and the shape the malleable minds of the societies and governments of tomorrow’s ultimate congealed shape via their influence of academia. Forerunners specialize in uplifting and improving highly trained Extraordinary Citizens with technology in the form of genetic advancements, cybernetic hardware, and prototype weaponry.

                          Spirit
                          Disciples of Atheios
The cynical enlightened pulling the strings behind religious institutions quickly drove out their less pragmatic and more faithful brethren into their rival Conventions or even the arms of the Traditions. The Disciples of Athieos proclaimed their goal of achieving independence from oppressive mystical and unknown forces by slaying god in the minds of the sleeping masses. They unshackle humanity from superstition and mysticism and make mankind the masters of their fate using the tools of dogma and philosophy.
The Disciples of Atheios split their efforts between steering the mores, sensibilities and taboos of Culture through agents in organized religion and actively battling spirits in the Frontlines of Extradimensional Space and the hidden nests within the material world. They are aided in this endeavor by the specialists among the Sealers. They recruit from a militant branch of Extraordinary Citizens trained and armed to deal with otherworldly threats, camouflage and support as members of government agencies and organized religion.

                          Matter
                          Reges Mundi
Since the founding of the Order of Reason the Kings of the World have brought the lionshare of the resources to the communal warchest as well as holding the majority of influence and leadership second only to the Disciples of Atheios. The Reges started as philosophers, alchemists and members of cults and secret society among the nobility and merchant classes throughout the entire Silk Road, modern Reges Mundi draw from the ruthless, pragmatic and elite enlightened from nearly every country in the world, now less worried about bringing in members with wealthy they now hold deathgrip on the keys to the world and bestow them upon even orphans destitute among the masses if they possess the right philosophy and competence. While the Disciples of Atheios help tame the mind of the Consensus the Reges Mundi specialize in technological foci of Infrastructure and accumulation of resources both material and energy and the workings of bureaucracy, economics and politics. They thus are perhaps the single greatest influence among the wealthy of the world, commanding international banking and conglomerated business. Recently the Kings of the World assimilated several of their old rivals among the Kings of the Underworld who chose not to through their lot with the Traditions. They work with the Forerunners to determine the timetable for advances in fuel and energy research, as well as when to release chemical and metallurgical breakthroughs. Extraordinary Citizens that serve the Kings of the World wield the sword near limitless wealth and influence that may buy.

                          Mind
                          Transapient Order
When the inevitable decisions to seal away mysticism and do away with superstition a number of the more radical philosophers from various major and minor conventions (for this timeline minor conventions refer to smaller crafts which joined the Order of Reason without the numbers and influence to form their own major Convention) joined together to hash out their ultimate endgames and the potential that enlightened science should inevitably provide to the sleepers. Theoretical futures and technologies were parsed from extended discussions and debate with the Forecasters. Theoretical Intelligences were contrived, and alternate states of being and unity were mapped out. A place for unknown and impossible sciences were invested in aspects of the unmapped brain, genome, and future. The Transapient Order evolved advances in genetics, neurology, psychology, sociology and mathematics both in secret isolation from the rest of the conventions as well as in think tanks and research groups with the Forerunners. The Order pioneered clockwork, and then robotics and then the crafting of inhuman intelligences. The Order pursues plans to transcend the limitations of the flesh with genetics, cybernetics or even the mind and society through gestalt consciousness, and the uplifting of animals, plants and artificial lifeforms.
The order uses foci inherent to their newly designed forms, with members developing mutations, implanting their cybernetics, uploading their minds into multiple vessels of flesh or machine or succeeding in mass exoduses into other realms of perception such as the Digital Web, or the Oneiros. The unique Extraordinary Citizens of the Transapient Order are the Theoretical Intelligence constructs often solely existing in Extradimensional Planes, and the Uplifted agents that once existed as simpler forms of life and even inanimate states.

                          Misc
                          The Wardens of Asylum, Bedlamites
Once the Order of Reason would simply euthanize or lobotomized captured or surrendered enlightened that would not submit to Reason and Science. However with the surrender of the Hermetic Sealers they decided to place more acute restrictions upon captured and processed enlightened of a more mystic bent. So Orphans and prisoners of War were put to use in the Ascension War rather than wasting their potential due to crimes of ego or ideology. They experimented with methods of control and processing, complex shackles of the mind and body were devised, some existing purely in the memories of the processed and others as simple as bombs or vessels of poisons that would dissolve and ruin their mind or unleash entropy upon their flesh if not treated with a regular procedure. The success of the Sealers could not be replicated to the same degree without the matter of free will uncontravined. Eventually the Sealers convinced the rest of the major Conventions to codify the Meta Convention of the Wardens of the Asylum, or simply the Asylum to those in the field. They formed a two caste system of Bedlamites, with processed volunteers known as the Shackled, beings who have been processed into a state of madness where their strange rituals and foci are psychologically profiled as an acute psychosis which they are only allowed to indulge in on the field away from sleepers are rarely under laboratory conditions for experimentation and research. The second caste are the Lobotomata, strongly incompatible enlightened are processed thoroughly until they are more docile, tractable or predictable in their reaction to specific stimulus. These beings are often deprived of their wits or senses until needed for security or laboratory experimentation, their senses are restored and triggers are applied to activate and extreme level of metaphysical psychosis. The Extraordinary Citizens among the Wardens of the Asylum are known as Guards or Handlers, they are charged with applying trigger stimuli and managing control functions for the Bedlamites. The other unique Extraodinary Citizens among the Asylum are various Reality Deviants with experimental procedures similar to the Enlightened Bedlamites. They can vary from EDE anchored in cadavers with cerebral explosives, or lunatic mutants subject to the whims of Extradimensional Forces collared with silver muzzles.
