  • How do you handle converting from humanity to a path in game/mechanics?

In our current Sabbat game we are planning to have an epilogue session where the players will spend XP, and most likely convert to a path due to having low humanity.

Now I know of the mechanical rules, needing humanity lower than 4, having conscious and self – control of 1 and having to roll a difficulty depending on your humanity and then you start at one dot. Now I have some questions mechanical and game wise that I could use help with.

    1) Getting self-control and conscious down to 1. I know with botched humanity (conscious diff 8) you lose a point in conscious, but I don’t think I have come across anything that would make you lose a point of self-control or does a botched frenzy roll do that? TBH I am thinking about waving this rule aside.
    2) Do players need to spend xp to get their path rating higher, or is there a way that can happen when they convert so they don’t start at one?
    3) Are any of you aware of any source material that has templates of NPCs who could be used to teach these paths. I really want to have it roleplay intensive when the players have their characters convert and having NPC examples would help a ton. I am almost thinking something like the monastery from Giovanni Chronicles 2.

Thank you ahead of time and any examples of how you have handled it would be appreciated.

    3) "Efrain Sortano will teach the Path of Metamorphosis and can impart the basics of the Path of the Feral Heart. Zadkiel ben Aron teaches his own interpretation of the Path of Night but can also teach the rudiments of other paths." Page 105, Mexico by Night. Considering the Pale Riders Pack (I follow you guys on Youtube, great stuff) is in Mexico swinging by Mexico should be fairly easy. Assuming hey don't all get killed by the Infernalists. ; )

Thanks for watching! Yeah the odds are stacked against them. I'll crack open Mexico City by Night and take a look. Thanks for the info!

You don't need to lose self-control, if the path has as virtue. So conviction and self-control path only need to lose this pesky conscience.

Not being familiar with your group or style, I probably would not have the conversion happen in the introduction itself, but a bit down the road. Not too long, but I'd use the epilogue and first few sessions to allow/force them in play to drop Humanity some to more risky levels. The intent being to allow the player to experience the potential dangers of being lost or loosing control to the Beast, but also to experience finding potential mentors/priests, (which will help give those NPCs importance). I personally, if I where the player, would rather build into going into a path and raising it rather than sort of having it handed to me. It would feel like more of an achievement.

I agree 100 percent. Just a FYI an epilogue is after something so when I say that I mean the end of our story. We are currently 9 sessions in and the players have been through some trials

Oh, sorry. I was thinking you meant it a bit poetically for the end of their mortal life transitioning into the game.

No need to be sorry, but yeah it will be kind of a good way to end the story. I'm pretty excited for it.

ChristopherZacher The best thing I can offer is to look into the dark ages; 20th Anniversary Dark Ages, it's on page 112.
                    Basically speaking -
                    1) Sin on Purpose and choose to lose a Virtue instead of (Humanity) Any virtue that needs to change to go to the new road must drop to 1
                    2) Sin on Purpose to drop (Humanity) to 1
                    3) Get a "Moment of Truth" for the new road and fight the beast trying to take over. If they succeed, they get one dot in the new virtues and one in the new road.
Failure means Wassail, and the PC Character is lost.

I'd recommend reading the book for how it deals with roads in general, the actual mechanics behind the above, and how mentors can help reduce the XP cost of buying the road up
