It's one of the symbols used by the Egyptian god Typhon. Typhon was often syncretized with Set. Both were associated with winds and storms, which is one reason the symbol looks similar to the symbol often used to represent hurricanes on weather maps. "Typhon" is, after all, where we get "typhoon."

Is it historical? All the representations of this symbol I'm turning up are, as the description in your link indicates, based on the weather map symbol for hurricanes, to adapt for the astronomical body named after Typhon.

Not that it matters for the Ministry design, of course. I'm just curious.

Um, no offense, but this is pretty much totally wrong.

              1) Typhon was a Greek (not Egyptian) mythological monster. The Greeks identified him with Set, just as they identified other Egyptian gods with their own deities.

              2) The word “typhoon” is generally agreed to come from either the Hindi “tufan” or the Chinese “tai fung.” The similarity to “Typhon” is a coincidence.

Although, to be perfectly fair, the Setites as a clan have always been a giant heap of pop-culture anachronisms. (Set wasn’t even particularly associated with snakes until Robert E. Howard.)

That Typhon symbol is a modern one, yeah, created to symbolize the centaur (planetoid with a particular type of orbit) named Typhon; the symbol is based on a stylized hurricane. The Ministry presumably co-opted it and added the eye in the middle.

It may also represent the mysticism of the clan. It is only a triangle off from looking like the old Clan Tremere symbol.

It is also the symbol of the Mad God Leviathan in Armageddon RPG.
