  • Garou and Poisons/Poisonous Plants

I saw in W20 that weak poisons and strong poisons can deal damage to Garou, between 5 and 10 levels, but apart from that, once the poison has run its course and the Garou's body has regenerated from the damage inflicted by the poison, the Garou is fine. "Like diseases, few poisons or drugs have a noticeable effect on Garou...The only toxins to have a significant effect on werewolves are supernaturally enhanced, and as such deal lethal damage."--W20, p. 258-259

I'm a bit confused by this. I understand they are really tough, very hardy supernatural creatures, but there are poisonous plants out there that can kill even large animals that weigh more than a Garou in Crinos form. For instance, just a mouthful of water hemlock (Cicuta maculata or Cicuta douglasii) can kill a human adult within 1-6 hours of ingesting it. It's also called cowbane because of the cattle that have died after eating it. It is considered by many to be the most poisonous wild plant in North America and can be easily mistaken for some wild edibles, like wild parsnip or wild carrot, unless you know the distinguishing features between these very similar-looking plants. People die from it because it paralyzes their diaphragm and respiratory muscles. How does this not drop and kill a Garou? And how would a poison be supernaturally enhanced?

How does a Garou get riddled with bullets and keep on going? Those shred things like hearts and lungs and diaphragms.
Garou aren't large animals, they are magical regenerating chosen of Gaia.

Garou, especially in alternate forms, regenerate ridiculous amounts of damage, sometimes in seconds. 5-6 levels of lethal (truly crippling injuries) heal in that many rounds (10 seconds-a couple of minutes per round). If the Garou in question can maintain an alternate form, they will suffer little more than a temporary ache from most poisons. The Garou will also be allowed a soak roll vs the damage from the poison (generally). So they will take less initial damage and then heal any remaining in the few rounds following. In Breed forms, things are a bit more complicated, but Garou aren't going to stay in those forms and let themselves die if they can help it. And if they do go down from poison, there is always the Rage roll to recover to save them (even if it does result in Frenzy).

On how they can be enhanced, Rite of Spirit Awakening will do it. There are other ways, but that is generally the easiest. Said Rite will supernaturally enhance mundane aspects of something. So it is really useful with herbs and poisons. System-wise that stuff is left up to the ST generally.

Exactly. It's important to remember Garou aren't even entirely physical either. They are creatures of half-spirit.

As for poison, as idpersona said, the Rite of Spirit Awakening will enhance natural poison's effects. Also, any kind of PENTEX "super-science", magical alchemy, or poison from strange Banes or Fomori would also count as creating a supernaturally enhanced poison.

As well as the supernatural poisons some other creatures use/produce like for example Nagah and Ananasi.

Thank you so much. This was very helpful in helping me understand better what Garou are. I keep thinking of them like people, but they're not. They are supernatural and half spirit.
