  • W20 core rules adapted by CB20

    Hey guys,

I have a problem with the changing breeds rules. This isn't a new problem, it always existed. But I guess our group will now - after changing too much editions over the last years - settle down with W20 and CB20. So I would like to do it as consistent as I can.

So how do you guys handle the Changing Breeds rules? Do they expand the core rules or do they overwrite them?
Here's a few examples: I have an Ananasi in my group. When Ananasi step sideways do they need an reflective surface? The ananasi rules doesn't say so but on the other hand I always though the Changing Breeds stat only the differences with the core rules.
If an Ananasi spends blood to get more actions (with Blood Pump) is she restricted in the same manner as Garou by DEX and WITS?

I guess you get the point. How do you handle this in your group?

Stew Wilson covered this in the KS, unless otherwise stated assume it's the core rules from w20...i.e. the apis and grondr don't have their bite and claw rules listed...so assume the same as a garou....sane would go for side stepping. Unless it says you don't need a reflective surface, you do.

If you're going by the breedbook, they shift into Crawlerling form and scuttle through the gauntlet's webs that way to reform on the other side.

And the difficulty was reverse from the Garou, right?

What doesn't kill you, makes you... stranger.

              Annnnnnd... I'm back.

Hypothetical question: Since the breedbooks to the CB Rev. to the CB20 there are more and more gifts that just references to the W20 corebook.
So If there is ever an Ananasi gift which requires to roll gauntlet - that said, I'm not really sure there is any, I don't know them all, especially not the CB20 ones - do I also reverse the DC?
Or better: would you reverse it as a GM?

That probably depends on the nature of the Gift.

They are none afaik, but the rite of summoning needs you to roll gnosis with Gauntlet as difficulty when you try to summon spirits into the real world. I'd leave that difficulty unchanged though, since the one you're trying to pull into the material world is not you but a regular spirit for whom the gauntlet works normally.

Does this hold true for Backgrounds as well? I'm most curious about Pure Breed and Ancestors.

The idea that CB20 supplements the rules and if something is not expressly forbidden, like a Background, it is used by each Changing Breed.

The CB20 books tell you, if I recall right, if specific backgrounds are not applicable to a specific Breed. Unless mentioned in that manner, a Breed can have them.

Though, without some of the pieces, one wonders how they work out. Pure Breed depends on a tribal look in W20, for example, but lots of the Fera that don't have tribes as such, so how it's supposed to apply to, say, Mokole streams is a bit of a mystery.

This is where I was a bit thrown as well figuring out how Pure Breed works for Gurahl. I could see where, it isn't restricted, but it is of so little import to the Tribes and Breed that it was never cultivated.
