  • 1001 Wraith NPCs & character concepts

A topic to share characters that could be useful or inspiration for our Wraith chronicles. Every level of detail is welcome. I'll start with this major NPC I wrote this week for an upcoming WtO game:

    1.
    Thomas Börner, Emerald Anacreon
A political mastermind who governs from his church Haunt beyond the northern frontier of the Leipzig Necropolis. For about two centuries now Thomas is the ranking Emerald official here, making him one of Leipzig's longest serving Anacreons. And although power still firmly rests with the Grim Legion, he's undoubtedly the most respected local Hierarch too.
Thomas lived during the first half of the 17th century in what was then the village of Mockau, having since become part of the city. The son of a miller, he followed in his father's footsteps and married a beautiful girl. Unfortunately Thomas came of age during the Thirty Years' War. Although feeling little appetite for leaving his young wife and daughter, the local pastor made a convincing argument. Telling the young man it was his duty to God to protect Lutheranism against the Catholic hordes. In taking up arms for his faith he and his family would earn divine protection.
In his years away from home, fighting under Swedish command, Thomas did feel protected. Never suffering any serious injuries, while he saw countless others perish. When finally being able to return to Mockau he was horrified to learn the pastor's promise had in fact not held up. During Thomas' absence the bubonic plague had ravaged the village. His parents, his wife, his child, they were all gone. Ditched in a mass grave only a few weeks before his return. Thomas felt betrayed by God and the pastor that spoke for Him. The furious soldier went to the church looking to mete out his revenge on the clergyman. Only to discover he had long since been buried as well. Thomas instead screamed at the heavens, cursing God as a storm was brewing. Only moments later the raging blasphemer was struck down by a bolt of lightning.
The Enfant had a Reaper from the Legion of Fate waiting for him. Once the situation was explained, Thomas vehemently refused to be inducted into that particular Legion. Insisting that his death was purely accidental, completely rejecting a higher power like fate or God. After arriving in Stygia, the Emerald Legion took possession of him instead.
A couple of decades later he returned to Leipzig's Shadowlands as a Legionnaire. Part of a Stygian force that was to establish a Necropolis there. Sadly Thomas was unable to find any trace of his family. Which only made him fight that much harder, knowing who to blame. Years of religious strife had left the area a hive of heresy that was to be eradicated. The Legionnaire took particular pleasure in tracking down his former pastor, sending him to the forges.
As the Necropolis grew, Thomas was dismayed to see the local Hierarchy's stance on Heretics softening over time. Multiple Circles of them were left in peace as long they didn't draw too much attention to themselves. This served as the impetus for the ambitious Lemure's long rise through the ranks. Hoping to one day find himself in a position where he could dictate a zero-tolerance policy toward heresy.
Thomas finally achieved the rank of Anacreon in the wake of the Battle of Nations, after his predecessor lost the last of his Fetters. Unfortunately the astounding number of casualties also confirmed the Grim Anacreon as absolute ruler of the Necropolis. The influence any other Legion would have would be negligible at best. Except if one of those other Anacreons were to be a particularly shrewd politician. Exactly what Thomas has developed into over the last couple of centuries. Becoming especially effective in the post-war period. As the Fifth Great Maelstrom left the Leipzig Grim Legion with a far younger and less experienced leader. With all his schemes starting to pay off, it looks like Anacreon Börner might finally get his way.

Image: A well-built figure wearing a wide-brimmed hat and 1630s soldier garb. As to command further respect from the ubiquitous Grim Legion, he always has a sword of Stygian steel buckled to his side. As well as wearing a skeleton mask similar in style to the helmets worn by the Grim military. Under the mask is the face of a man in his early twenties, sporting a moustache and short beard. Thomas' most fetching feature are his compassionate hazel eyes.

Roleplaying Hints: You hate God, in your opinion it's just another guise of Oblivion. He's the entity that's taken everything from you, who you fear and hate. However centuries of politicking have taught not to reveal your true feelings about anything. Everyone should instead have the impression that you're on their side. Which means you rarely give a straight answer to any question. Your soft spot for women and children is the only aspect of your true motives you've been unable to hide entirely.
