  • Performance or Expression?

So some forms of performance require considerable athletic/acrobatic skill like Gymnastics, Ballet, and Figure Skating. What skill do you need to roll for these?

Athletics for all of them. Only regular dancing (not ballet, which is insanely physically intense) goes under Expression. Everything that is more physically intense than dancing should go under Athletics.
Unless you're asking about the Performance skill in WoD, in which case I have no idea.

What Tessie said. As for Performance skill in WoD (in which case you're in the wrong forum!) remember that Expression is a talent and Performance is a skill, so it's up to you as ST to decide what comes from raw talent and what comes from practice.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Tessie here. What Skill you use in an athletic performance is going to depend on the intent of the performance. Are you displaying athletic prowess like in the case of an Olympic figure skating competition? Then you roll Athletics, maybe with Presence if showmanship is an important scoring metric. Are you merely using the sport as a medium for artistic expression, like in a Disney on Ice performance? Then you roll Expression, probably with Strength or Dexterity.

Normally it would be the attribute not the skill used that would change.
If you still feel that doesn't fit you can require two separate rolls, athletics to see if they physically pull off the maneuver and expression to see if they made it look good.
(If they only make the second roll you have an 'I meant to do that' moment)

I have to agree with Charlaquin here. Though I would say that even in an Olympic competition if you are doing it to show off the beauty and artistry of a routine then it would still be Expressions, even in physically demanding sports.

One of the most show off:y sports in the Olympics, acrobatics, is listed under Athletics in the book, though.

I agree with 2ptTakrill. It's better to have a sport or an art linked to a single Skill and swap the Attribute if you are going to perform your sport/art differently. That way you don't have to train two different Skills (upper case S) in order to improve a single skill (lower case s) or have to buy multiple specialties or the Interdisciplinary Specialty Merit when you're practicing the cores of your sport/art.
