  • [Fan Dark Era] Conquest of Paradise - Age of Exploration

I have an Era idea that I proposed to consider to adding in Dark Eras Companion 2. It would be perfect for tying many different previous official Eras. Even if it will not go in to official books, I think it's great idea even just for fan setting, so I will expanded here, in this topic. It's open project, so any voice or material is welcome.

    From Wikipedia about time period:
Global exploration started with the Portuguese discoveries of the Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, the coast of Africa, and the discovery of the sea route to India in 1498; and, on behalf of the Crown of Castile (Spain), the trans-Atlantic Voyages of Christopher Columbus between 1492 and 1502, and the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1519–1522. These discoveries led to numerous naval expeditions across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans, and land expeditions in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia that continued into the late 19th century, and ended with the exploration of the polar regions in the 20th century.
    Conquest of Paradise
    Spain and Portugal, 1492 – 1580 AD – Mage & Beast Era

The end of XIV and start of XV is time of great journey and adventures leading to uncovering new and strange lands. It’s also time of grand conflicts, sating desires of selfish humans and spread of exotic diseases. All under new naval empires of Spain and Portugal that spread Christian ways to newly discovered Americas and new routes to Asia. Conquistadors are clamming lands for their Kings, Queens and Jesus Christ. Terrifying beasts are hunting oceans of water and nightmares of sailors – and lost cities of uncovered civilizations are there to be found and discovered. Begotten are finding strange legends and monsters of their soul contrasting with local beings of myths and dreams, fighting over sating their Hungers – yet learning their are all Children of the same Dark Mother. Diamond Orders, with just century old Mysterium as their member, are setting sails to finally found their promised Atlantis, just over horizon.

    Conquest of Paradise - Introduction
It’s Anno Domini 1492. On 12th October Christopher Columbus landed with his crew on the San Salvador, starting era of exploration to the New World for Europeans. He previously plead to king of Portugal John II - Perfect Prince - to finance his expedition, but ruler declined few times. Columbus could get to New World only by the support from Catholic Monarchs - Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon – rulers of the joined kingdom that will become Spain in future.

They just ended Reconquista of Muslims states in Iberian Peninsula in January by conquering last free Emirate of Granada. To force unity of new kingdom, Monarchs declare Alhambra Decree in 31st March on Jews to convert to Catholicism or be forced to leave kingdoms. In 1502 the Crown of Castile issued an edict which banned Islam for all people living in Granada. Fulfilling those decrees fall upon Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition (Spanish: Tribunal del Santo Oficio de la Inquisición), commonly known as the Spanish Inquisition (Inquisición española), that was hunting for secret Jews, Muslims and other heretics in the kingdom.

In year 1494, on June 7th, there was signed Treaty of Tordesillas that divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between the Portuguese Empire and the Crown of Castile. It practically split the world in half for Portugal and Spain to conquer. The race to spread their word of Jesus Christ and powers of those two Empires begun.

In 1498, Vasco da Gama returns from India, opening new ways to Orient that Columbus wanted. Year later Amerigo Vespucci for Castile discovers the mouth of the Amazon River and reaches 6°S, in present-day northern Brazil.

In 1513, Jorge Álvares sailing for Portugal, lands off the coast of China, on Nei Lingding Island at the Pearl River Delta, opening sea travel for Europeans without need to go by Ottoman Empire.

In 1521, Hernán Cortés conquers Aztec empire.

In 1522, Portugal commander Ferdinand Magellan that sailed for newly created Spain in 1519, dies in tries first circumnavigation of the Earth. His journey is ended Juan Sebastián Elcano – one of commanders that rebelled against Magellan before his death.

In 1533, Francisco Pizarro finally conquers Peru.

In 1540–42, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado searches for the mythical Seven Cities of Cibola – even when he found only dust and mud, he finds out 1/5 of modern USA territory.

In 1542 or 1543 Fernão Mendes Pinto, Diogo Zeimoto and Cristóvão Borralho for Portugal reach Tanegashima in Japan – opening Country of Cherry Blossoms for Europeans.

This Era ends with Iberian Union of 1580 when Crowns of Portugal and Spain are joined by person of Philip II, stopping the race against two powers as they are for next 60 years one global empire. In the same year Sir Franics Drake completes second circumnavigation of the globe, showing other colonial powers rose to the prominence with famous English Armada ruling overseas…

    Theme: Colonialism
Conquest of Paradise is Dark Era about Colonialism – it’s the policy of a nation seeking to extend or retain its authority over other people or territories. It’s involves unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous peoples. Through modern eyes, colonialism is not considered to be a positive thing. Many people were murdered, raped or harmed in ways we can't imagined in the name of it. However, through the eyes of the colonialists, they were doing good things, like "bringing civilization to the barbarians" or “saving souls of those that did not see the light of Lord”. The Age of Exploration is, without doubt, a colonialism Era.

However, if you are playing in it, you are likely to take the part of the colonialist instead of the occupied citizen. Players are going to deal with the consequences of being a colonialist and taking over another person's homeland in the name of progress and state. Some of them may even start the game as their characters (not the players) think that colonialism is good way of doing things - but when they stumble upon the deeds done in the name of progress, things may start to change inside of them - some may find the strength to challenge the world they live in. Others may break. At any case, dealing with the consequences of colonialism - of your own acts - should be something your character would have to deal with at some point in this Era.

From our perspective colonialism is a very bad thing, but we can't force upon the people of the past ideals which weren't theirs. We may not be perfect, but we are better than who we were, and the only thing we can do is to improve. That is the horror of the Age of Exploration - that acts has consequences, and that while you think of yourself as a descent human being, you are doing some dark things to other people simply because you can't recognize they are bad from your point of view. You have to face your consequences and look in the mirror, even if you don't like what you'll see in there.

The other side of events is also with it’s own struggles. Native populations are divided over if European colonists are good or bad for their communities – or that One God should really be their god. Many indigenous characters try to oppose colonists and have their good reasons to do it - impatiently waiting, the Europeans come to slavery or violence to achieve their goals. But will open war with them is solution? Answering violence with violence to solve this problem? Especially with superior technology of colonists? Maybe there are other ways to stop this madness – like diplomacy or close relationship with members of other side? Indigenous characters in this Era must make decisions and show if they are better than invaders on their lands.

But it’s not limited only to humans. Just like Spain and Portugal want’s to convert Indians to Catholicism - Diamond Orders want to spread as far as they can, as from the times of Alexanders the Great and Roman Empire they stayed in mostly the same territory of Europe and East. Nameless mages, on the other hand, are partially enamored with millennia lore and power ‘Atlanteans’ are bringing with them, as intruders saying ‘they all are heirs to the same One Atlantis’. Other parts of indigenous Awakened are saying those intruders are talking about alien gods and alien myths to sustain their alien magic – and they are bringing alien dangers with them. Even if Orders really want to build ‘better tomorrow for everyone’ – they doing the same mistakes with Nameless as mortals colonial powers to native populations, often showing darker sides of mage culture contacts. From decisions of both Diamond and Nameless future of magic in New World will be shaped.

Beasts, on the other hand, are those people uncovering or embracing their ethnic legacy. By becoming monsters from their forefathers myths and legends, they sustaining traditions of their people, literally becoming their stories – and nightmares. And when there is pressure from invaders on their groups to leave, they move – often to the place where they become outsiders invading another land. Being monster means that you are monster no matter where you are. And they are all, in part, colonists and colonized of human psyche, at the same time.
Mood: Race to Conquer the World
In this Era, Portugal and Spain are literally racing to take as much of the world for themselves and in the name of the Lord. Even if expeditions takes years to finalize – and wars to win – everyone knows that those first on the finishing line are those dealing the cards. Every conquistador, every navigator, every missionary and even every diplomat knows and feels it in his bones. ‘We must be first!’ is subconscious motto every expedition is reciting in their minds. They telling stories only about winners, in the end.

    Orders in XVI century
In XVI century, Orders of mages are looking almost the same as modern Awakened know them. Diamond is finally unified, with Mysterium becoming single Order from Pancryptiates and Keepers of the Word around the Hellenistic world in last century. Seers of Throne are still collection of separated cults but foundations for first Ministry – Hegemony – are laid in Italian city-states. Those unifications and divides of European mages are taken with them overseas, to the New World and discovered strange lands.

In XVI century Awakened culture is stepped in Hermeticism – long-lost esoteric system that many equates with lore of Atlantean Orders themselves. More about this philosophical movement will be later in Conquest of Paradise text. European mages of those times also often used names like Vis for energy in centuries later be known as Mana and Wisdom’s older name – Sophia. Gnosis is constant across centuries as concept and name.

Whatever they say they motives are, at back of their head there is always voice of their Obsessions to seek next Atlantean civilization Ruins. In truth, explorers of this Era found many possible Temples of Time Before, each one raised by different people – but also strangely similar in their designs and usage. It’s from this time that term Time Before comes from – contrasted with many distinguishable sources of those places, clearly not looking as Plato’s Atlantis – European Awakened need to supplement one vision of Perfect City of their forefathers, with many possible variants. Time Before just looked as handy term for that.

    Adamantine Arrow

European Arrows often join as Conquistadors ( Portuguese or Spanish conquistadores meaning "conquerors" ), soldiers and explorers of Spanish and Portuguese Empires, on their voyages to discovered new regions. Conquista let people of any social status to join and look for social promotion, so Arrows hailing from them were very diverse group. Ungula Draconis also looks overseas for new challenges and conflicts they can perfect themselves upon. Defending both Sleeper and Awakened travelers is noble self-imposed duty they cultivate. Talon of the Dragon is first to seek – beside Oaths of protecting their pears or newly found Consilia – for weapons or military outposts in Temples of Time Before.

    Guardians of the Veil

Any kingdom needs it’s spies – Spain and Portugal are not different in it. But Eyes of the Dragon are much more – their entrench themselves in new Renaissance cults in Labyrinth or go for the inner circles with people in power. However, it also means they are not so optimistic in going overseas. Those that do it are ones truly dedicated in policing Awakened over new lore and making sure that newly build outposts of power will be free from Exarchs or Abyssal cults. Most go on to ships by using their Labyrinth contacts and forging official letters to captains they are working in the interests of the crown.

    Mysterium

As single Order, Wings of the Dragon are newest part of Diamond. Unification of Pancryptiates and Keepers of the Word begun in Byzantine Empire in 12th century, but future global Order was still limited to Eastern Roman Empire in that time. It started to change from ruleship of Palaiologoi dynasty on 1261 AD onward – state was going from one crisis to another and Awakened all too much recall the fall of Western Roman Empire from their Time magic visions. Sensing that Byzantium is slowly falling, newly formed Mystagogues started to travel around Eastern world to link two Orders that should be one from the start. In few decades they went more and more West, going over to Europe. When Constantinople finally fall in 1453 AD, last of local Mysterium members went to four sides of the world with remnants of Athenea stores and Alae Draconis became truly global Order. In a decade or two, last caucuses of Pancryptiates and Keepers officially renamed themselves as Mysterium.

Now, after half of century focused on reforming and great travels of Eastern scholars to Europe – lore from Byzantine brothers is reinvigorating Sleepers and Awakened thinkers, transforming Mysterium to more focused Order. After rebuilding, Mystagogues are looking for next great quest to take – and travel to new lands to understand their Supernal legacy is obvious choice. Most Order members join Conquistadors as navigators or scholars, needed in understanding foreign places. Others are becoming parts of trading posts – cover work that let them smuggle Artifacts to Europe.

    Silver Ladder

Tearchs in XV century often times work under guise of Catholic Church, governor offices or trading posts stuff members. Missionaries are especially popular as this role easily gives them reason to travel abroad, instruct the Sleepers about moral responsibility and create new laws for new lands. Easy access to native people – and by this to Nameless mages in their ranks – is very profitable additions. The same as in centuries before, Vox Draconis is spreading it’s Consilium system with them, trying to build coherent society of Awakened – often times enshrouded as Christian mission or settlement.

I want to point out that one of main inspiration for this project where Navio de Tolos, fan created conspiracy made by LostLight - that are Begotten hunting sailors from the time period. I would want them to become 'officially' part of this Era, at least as antagonists to Beasts in those time. May I, LostLight? And if yes - maybe we can expand this 'Liar as fantastic lands' idea in full swing?

Sure! The Navio were designed, after all, to emerge during this Era. Just remember that following their current history, they still don't have their Endowments during this time, as they solve the Map only near its end. They may have alternative kind of Endowments, however, like some variant of the Relic Endowment. That Era, in fact, may see their rise, decline and rise again, as it is represented in them getting access to Relics, losing it as they fall from Conspiracy status, and get that status again as they get their hands on Caminhos.

Should Navio simple be Compact before getting Caminhos Endowment? Difference between Compact and Conspiracy in 1E is having Endowment as a group, yes? In 2E we are not sure how it will be then divide.

As to Rise, Fall, Rise Again and Map Solving - What dates you would see about it? And you mention that Alberto Lisboa made his ship in 15th century - Around what year would that be? Age of Exploration start something around 1492, in the end - leaving Lisboa small time frame for being 15th century Captain.

the reason I suggest the Navio to not be a Compact during the Age of Exploration is that they are a rising power at that point of time. It was the time they ruled the seas, discovered lost lands and searched for new adventures no man has ever seen before. By range and resources, they shouldn't be a compact during that Era, but eventually they had to reinvent themselves to survive the changing times.

Lisboa would probably lay the foundation to the conspiracy near the end of the of the 15th century, or perhaps early 16th (not later than ~1510). Alberto would vanish around 10-20 years after, as he was drawn to the Void never to return (Maria lasted for 10, and that is the longest documented "lifespan" of a King Captain). During that time they are still a compact, reaching a conspiracy status only around ~1560. They survive beyond that Era, reaching a peak of power and influence during the Golden Age of Piracy, until they crush around the ~1720, as they suffer a major hit with the fall of Nassau. They are reduced to a compact during that time, but around 20 years later, Maria solve the Map, and the conspiracy is reborn.

That means that if you take the shorter time frame, they are still a compact, even if one rapidly growing. If you take the longer time frame, you truly have a conspiracy is the making. At any case, the players would have their chance at exploring a rising power, laying the foundation to one of the wildest conspiracies the CofD has ever known.

Third version of Beasts Families – I cleared entry to Beasts situation, moved and expanded converso problems – and repercussions of those on Begotten population. Also cleared Namtaru, as they do not need minorities in their write-up now. Eshmaki are last to go – if you got some ideas on those – I’m all ears.

                Beasts Families in XVI century

XVI century is time of great changes in society. With those, European Begotten must adapt – or need to journey to new lands, hoping for the new start. They also find alien Horrors of those fringe soil and must go to fight or agreement with local monsters. But the greatest problems for Children of Dark Mother are the Catholics Monarchs.

In 31st March Queen Isabella declares Alhambra Decree on Jews to convert to Catholicism in four months or be forced to leave their kingdoms. The so called Marranos ( Jewish converts) only in public changed their faith – in secret many still practiced Judaism. The almost the same story went with Muslim minority under Catholics Monarchs - Treaty of Granada from 1491 guaranteed religious tolerance towards Muslims, for a few years before Islam was outlawed in 1502 in the Kingdom of Castile and 1527 in the Kingdom of Aragon, leading to Spain's Muslim population becoming nominally Christian Moriscos ( Muslim converts). That forces converso (converts to Catholicism ) from Jewish and Muslim religions to adhering to their new state faith or leaving newly forming. Inquisition start their ‘witch hunts’ for those practicing religion of their fathers in secret, looking for any signs of heresy.

This social pressure borne nightmares – and nightmares borne Begotten. Beasts in Spain and Portugal of this Era see rising numbers of Devourings in repressed religious minorities of their kind with Horrors from the myths and legends of their forefathers – Ghouls and Djinn for Muslims or Dybbuk and Behemoth for Jews, to name few. Those new Children of the Dark Mother ( that many Jewish Beasts connect with Lilith ) are actively opposing Inquisition and trying to destroy Catholic Church in their kingdoms. There are even stories about Horrors based on monotheistic dark Angels, Hunger for fighting other Abrahamic faiths in response. Other Begotten are joining ships set to New World, Africa and Orient, to start new life and found others of their kind in the rest of the world. One is sure – it’s interesting times to be a Beast, as say one Chinese curse!

                Anakim

Many Anakim believe the Basajaun to be a tribe of Giants that dwelt in Basque country in the time before recorded history. As the tales come down, these stocky, hairy Anakim had a prodigious Hunger, but sated it entirely on their massive flocks of livestock. They taught useful skills to the mortal newcomers and the non-Beasts of their own tribe, and built hundreds of monuments to their own strange gods that still stand today. Modern Giants often like to speculate that the Basajaun still haunt the remote regions of Basque country, but it’s been centuries since any native Beast has claimed to see one. Jewish Anakim are Old Testament Behemoth. In general Europe they are Giants and Cyclops. In Americas they are Wendigo.

                Eshmaki

In Europe they are popular as Banshee or Dybbuk.

                Makara

Krakens and Sirens – those monsters of the ocean are most palpable for the people of that time. Sailors and sea travelers are most likely to be Devoured by those Nightmares of the Depths. And as more and more people are sailing overseas, Makara are becoming majority in Begotten population. But it’s not only about water - they dwell deep in to secrets and forgotten lore, finding lost civilizations or treasures buried under rocks. Foreign lands have their own share of Makara – various monsters of the lakes or seas, primordial hunters piercing human memories. In Americas they are Ogopogo or Ahuizoti.

                Namtaru

Disease sweeps the world in XVI century, when they brought across the seas, from Old to New World and vice versa. Many die, most will survive with rise of medicine from the times of Black Death. Sick will live, but they also stop being pretty. Pimples, cysts or scars are often view in those populations. It’s not even treated as ugliness in those times. But stories about witches ‘third nipple’ or ‘devils marks’ are starting to spread in population under watchful eye of Inquisition. Namtaru are answer to Nightmares of Revulsion that spreading in the heart of kingdom. On general in Europe they are represented as Basilisk, Chimera or Medusa. In Americas local Namtaru have souls of beings like Chupacabra.

                Ugallu

Exposure is crucial to the Age of Exploration. Not only you must be exposed to the new lands to truly understand living in there – you also must open your mind to go out of your day to day life and look for something more. It’s not coincidence it’s Leonardo Da Vinci, one of greatest minds in those times, was looking for the way to let human to fly. Freethinkers are said to be ‘free as birds’ – and Ugallu really understand what does this mean. But this do not imply that Nightmares of Exposure are not monsters in this Era – contrary, they are the ones more dangerous. In Europe they are Dragons, Harpies or Phoenixes. in Americas they are Thunderbird or Jersay Devil. In India they are Uchchaihshravas ( 7 headed flying horse ) and Airavata ( winged elephant ). In Oceania the Rainbow Serpent represent Ugallu.

Portugal has a Dark Era about exploration in Ancient Bloodlines/Mysteries that could be useful for crossover inspiration. I haven't read it too closely, so I'm afraid I can't comment on it.

Disease sweeps the world in XVI century, when they brought across the seas, from Old to New World and vice versa. Many die, most will survive with rise of medicine from the times of Black Death. Sick will live, but they also stop being pretty. Pimples, cysts or scars are often view in those populations. It’s not even treated as ugliness as nowadays, most of the time. But stories witches ‘third nipple’ or ‘devils marks’ are starting to spread in population. In 1487, King Ferdinand promoted the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition Tribunals in Castille that join similar body in Kingdom of Aragon. In 31 March 1492 the Alhambra Decree (also known as the Edict of Expulsion) is issued in Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon ( Spain ) that forces converso ( Catholics converts ) from Jewish and Muslim religions to adhering to their new state faith or leaving newly formed Spain. Inquisition start their ‘witch hunts’ for those practicing religion of their fathers in secret. Namtaru are answer in those minorities under Nightmares of Revulsion that spreading in the heart of kingdom. Many Jews and Muslims, repressed in life for their faith, are Devoured by the Horrors from the myths of their ancestors – like Ghouls, Djinn or Golem - and sate their Hungers on fighting the Inquisition. On general in Europe Basilisk, Chimera and Medusa are Nightmares of Revulsion. In Americas local Namtaru have souls of Chupacabra.

This Era ends in 1522 with Ferdinand’s Magellan - and finished by Juan Sebastián Elcano - voyage to first circumnavigation of the Earth.

As we are clearly going with Inquisition also - it's not possible to talk about Spain in that time and not going with it - I have next Hunters fan group to include in this Era, if Master LostLight let me. It's his Los Inocentes, so called Black Cabal, hunters inside Inquisition!

yeah, the Innocents should operate during this Era. Remember that the vast majority of the Black Cabal are slashers, and that they, undoubtedly, have interest at "redeeming" foreign "heretics"

"Master" is probably way too much, Wyrd, but thanks XD Always nice to know people like what I write.

                              Good luck with this one!
