  • What If? Overwatch (Blizzard) Canon

Because I felt the need to complete the DCU and Marvel reimagining, and I know squat about Image. That, and the game already has a Gothic Horror event that happens every Halloween, so...

What if the reason Overwatch's technology seems so much like magic was that...it was. Magic and advanced technology draw on the same laws of the universe in the CofD, so the world of Overwatch being what happens after humanity powers through the elementary sections of occult physics isn't that far fetched. That, and if you're someone who crawls through the lore a lot, you quickly realize that the supposed utopia...really isn't. See: Vishkar, and them reacting to discovering no evidence of wrongdoing by a competitor being to blow up their building rather than lose a construction bid.

So, random theories on what various Overwatch Heroes are through a CofD lens?

    My personal picks:

Tracer: Hungry Sin-Eater. Yeah, no lucky time-shift here, that accident left her very dead and joined with a geist personifying the risk of fatal accidents in stunts, giving her the distinct easy-going attitude.

Symmetra: Obrimos Seer of the Throne trying very hard to convince herself she was recruited by the right side despite eying a phone number to the local thearchs' recruitment center.

Roadhog: Hunter in Darkness Rahu, living embodiment trying to protect what's left of his home somehow. Sometimes not as effectively as he'd like.

Widowmaker: Centimanus Tammuz made from the remains of Amelie Lacroix, and having some strong Residual Memories. It's not even that she wants to be evil, it's that she has no idea how other to be than an assassin. If she ever leaves Talon she'll be a good Pariah.

EDIT: Realized that, given what she was made for, Tammuz fits Widowmaker more than Galateid. She is no one's companion, as evinced by that "Under the Mistletoe" highlight (she pulls it out to hang over her head...then punches the cameraman out in disgust).

Others (ie, Talon, because bad guys are cool):

Doomfist: Abnormally humanitarian Ivory Claw with a distinct Fetish containing a Strength spirit.

Reaper: Deviant, Nemesis with a focus on his past as the thing he hates, considered a Devout due to his friendship with Moira.

Sombra: Autumn Court Wizened who joined up with Talon to protect herself from her Keeper, on her way to becoming a Goblin Queen due to her abuse of Goblin Contracts to hide her identity and get everywhere in computer systems.

Moira: Mysterium Thrysus-turned-Scelestus, chasing a Mystery that stats the Abyss and Supernal are the same thing through different lenses.

Likes aside, gotta give you credit for always coming up with creative and unexpected translations from one setting to the CotD, Leliel. Kudos, really.

If Sombra isn't an Unchained, I'll eat one of my hats.

I'd go that route for Zenyatta as well, to be fair.

Bastion probably too, if one with some GM hidden programming it needs to deal with, but for Orisa I'd pick the easy route and make her a Promethean

EDIT: Also, for reasons I can't exactly explain, the idea of Brigitte as a Created made by Torbjorn that takes on knightly themes for her Pilgrimage seems quite cool to me. Plus Pharah as an Ugallu Nemesis

Bastion's themes are all Promethean, though.

Zenyatta's...hard to pin. He's somewhere between Mage and Promethean.

Brigitte is all Obrimos. As for Pharah....

Well. Justice rains from above. Good thing I brought an umbrella.

Mmm, you do have a point on Bastion. It has all the elements.

Zen's tough, but I'd place him between Demon and Mage instead. Though if we keep him as a robot while translating him to CotD, I do think that the story hooks and implications of AIs becoming Mages are full of potential.

Brigitte is a perfect Obrimos, it's just that I can't shake the version of her as a Promethan off my mind. Any thoughts for Torb and Reinhardt?

Hard to not argue Reinhardt as an Obrimos as well, particularly as an Arrow, or an Elodoth Talon. Torb....No idea.

                  Aw, thanks.

Torb is obviously a Wizened. No matter how he got his powers, he's a Wizened. That much Dwarf in one place turned him into a Wizened.

Also, some of the hero Heroes:

Soldier: 76: A member of VALKYRIE's successor (his genetic treatments weren't enough to push him beyond human - another reason Reaper resents him to no end), turned Pariah, turned "solo operator" (big Swiss quotation marks around that phrase - he gets his tech somewhere).

Jesse McCree: Tempted to make him a Blood Talon after all the fan-concept of him being a werewolf, but I'll go with his lack of any wolf-theming and make him an Inguma Predator who leans a bit into the Ugallu part of his family ("It's high noon" may as well be his hunting cry, the last thing his prey ever hears before feeling the bullets impact).

Mercy: An Obrimos Libertine, actually, though she's a specialist in Life magic. She's all about Techne and turning magical theory into nanotech fact. Which implies that in the CofD, she really is a mad scientist who has a complicated time with ethics, and a genuinely good person. Mages be complicated, yo.

The Shimada Bros: Lineage of Offspring or possibly Proximi; Hanzo relies on his abilities and archery exclusively, while Genji was saved by Mercy hacking the God-Machine's own medical tech to catch his soul before it left his body (as shown in his Blackwatch skin, his mods aren't actually all that extensive).

Mei: The First Unchained Herself come to wreck vengeance upon the world A Lion-Headed Arisen who's gone seriously native, to the point where it's not obvious what her Guild is; she does not care about the Judges any more. Snowball is actually her faithful Sadikh's brain inna jar inna cute exterior.

Hmm...would D.Va be Hunter, Changeling, Mage, or if she really is that cheerful in the CofD, Charmer Slasher?

Too many answers that are compelling.

But the dynamics of her mechanics actually vaguely point towards something like a werewolf or demon, and a demon in particular would ride that balance interestingly.

Funnily enough you could say it's the mechanical aspect of her that is her Cover, with it even being destroyed when Going Loud.

                            Bloodline: The Stygians
Ordo Dracul Mysteries: Mystery of Smoke, Revised Mystery of Živa
Mage The Awakening: Spell Quick Reference (single page and landscape for computer screens)

Inverted Demon as a template? Awesome.
