  • Horror Chronicle Inspiration, Please Add

I've been working on a list of horror trends. Mostly things that make people feel uneasy without going too far into body horror and torture.
    • The Uncanny Valley
      • Dolls
      • Mannequins
      • Mascot Costumes
      • Animatronics
      • Masks
      • Scarecrows
      • Statues
      • Poor CGI (i.e. 90's/2000's CGI.
    • The Unsettling
      • Plastic Surgery (Facial)
      • Clowns
      • Overly Friendly People
    • Nothing
      • Darkness
      • Feeling of someone behind you
      • Silence
      • Alone
    • Animals
      • Spiders
      • Wolves
      • Cats
      • Coyotes
      • Dogs
      • Reptiles
What would you add as a Horror Trope or something that just scared you.

To Animals I would probably add sharks and jellyfish, while under either Nothing or The Unsettling could go objects in strange/unexpected places (ie, a door in the middle of an empty field, or a knife in a nursery room, or an elaborately locked box that contains only a single strand of hair).

Betrayal and the breakdown of trust, both in people and in general expectations. Something is out of place and no one around you seems to acknowledge anything is wrong. The world has changed around you in unfair ways. Your closest loved ones' behavior suddenly alters. The floor falls out from under you and what you previously thought was safe and reliable has revealed itself to be something you do not understand.

Dissonance and confusing signals. Ominous intensity and specificity during a routine action. Danger that is matter-of-fact and silent. A place that is cold in the height of summer.

Aside from some excellent examples above, being unable to ask for help even when a large group of people are around or worse, asking for help and being ignored for whatever reason. I think it can be used in a setting with a “masquerade” quite well—most bystanders won’t believe in the supernatural, won’t have the means to help, or might be unwilling to help what they see as a monster if they’re human (or think they’re helping a “delusional” human that’s “raving” about a supernatural monster by getting them into a hospital/mental hospital. Not knowing who you can trust, if anyone.

Also natural disasters or sudden accidents can make you feel small or like you have no control over anything.

Certain sounds (disaster alerts on TVs/phones, sirens, TV static) or music that’s off-key or in minor key when it’s usually in a major key. People crying or screaming. Animals that SOUND like people crying or screaming. People laughing when they shouldn’t be.
