    [Skin-Thieves] Jack the Ripper

Yeah, I broke the rule that Skin-Thieves steal animal shapes; I feel this is enough of a scary... thing... that it is justified.

    Virtue: Thorough

Cleanse this world of human filth.

Conditions: Delusion ("This world is a den of whores, and needs to be cleansed.")

    Numina
Innocuous: Any Perception roll to notice "Jack" takes a -2 penalty.
Regenerate: Spend 1 Essence as a Reflexive action to heal 1 Bashing or Lethal (Bashing takes priority).

    Equipment
    Knife (Damage: +0, Initiative: -1, Strength: 1, Size: 1)

    Skin-Thief Template: Human Prey

"Jack" is somewhat of an oddity among Skin-Thieves; namely, his "totem animal" is human beings. More specifically, they are what he refers to as "human filth"; those he perceives as drunkards, prostitutes, and druggies are all subject to his wrath (and, as far as he's concerned, are nothing more than beasts).

    Thieving Aspect:
Vicious Skintaker (-1): "Jack"'s ritual only works if the person whose skin he's stealing is messily mutilated; at least a few of the victim's internal organs must be removed and hidden.
    Talisman Aspect:
Talisman (0): "Jack" needs to wear the soiled garments of his latest victim; while he is allowed to clean and patch the outer garments, any undergarments must be left as soiled as they were when he took them off the corpse.
    Skinchanger Aspects (Positive):
Bare Necessities (1): "Jack" is left wearing his talisman when he transforms; however, he can change while in his other form. He still needs to be wearing his victim's garments when he shifts back.

Fast Healing (2): "Jack" has some natural biokinetic talent, which is enough to keep his true form up and walking at the tender age of 144; when he's in a body that's a good deal less decrepit, he can devote his efforts to simply healing faster.

Increased Essence (2): The Ripper has been around the block for a good while; long enough to figure out how to make the most of his "Animal Magnetism".

Long Life (0): Jack the Ripper has Long Life at the two-dot level; however, given that he is already 144 years old, this is merely included for flavor, rather than for any mechanical benefit.

Skillful Change (1): "Jack" only needs to slip on his victim's garments to change - the actual "action" of changing form is negligible.

Spirit Affinity (4): Jack The Ripper possesses the Regenerate Numina, representing a focused application of his healing capabilities.

Strong Instincts (1): "Jack" hasn't learned many new tricks over the years, because he's never had to. Whenever he changes into his other form, he uses his victim's Attributes, Skills, and Specialities in place of his own; the only exceptions are his Intelligence and any skills his victim had no ranks in. He can spend 1 Willpower to instead use the better of his Victim's Attributes and Skills or his own, and has access to both his own Specialities and those of his former victim; this benefit lasts as long as he is in his victim's form.

Sweet Voiced Fiend (1): "Jack" hasn't gotten this far by being noticeably odd; he reduces penalties to Persuasion and Subterfuge (as well as to voice-related Expression rolls) by 2.
    Skinchanger Aspects (Negative):
Restricted Change (-1): "Jack" can only change forms at night, and only while drunk.

Tell (-1): Regardless of the form he takes, and regardless of how he scrubs and cleans, the blood of his murders follow him around. The cuffs and hems of any clothing that "Jack" wears become gradually more bloodstained the longer he wears them. If the shirt was perfectly clean when he put it on, there will be stains by the end of the scene.
    Aspects Developed Over Time (12xp):

Scentless Transformation (1): "Jack" learned that dogs and other animals gave away his presence more often than not; he didn't smell right. It took him a few years, but he finally figured out how to scrub his scent out of his victims' clothing without removing theirs.

Sense of Familiarity (2): It's a noticed psychological phenomenon; people don't notice people "below" them in the social hierarchy, except as vague faces and sort-of names. It took some time, but "Jack" learned to weaponize this tendency. No-one notices him unless he wants them to.

Spirit Affinity (+1): Over the years, Jack the Ripper learned how to simply pass beneath notice; as such, he "naturally" developed the Innocuous Numina.
Unique Power (Bathing in Human Sewage):
Jack the Ripper possesses the unique capability of literal identity theft; whenever he prepares a victim's clothing to be his Talisman, he may spend 1 Willpower dot to "rob" that person's identity. This grants him the following benefits:
    1. Alternate Identity ••• ([Victim's Name]).
    2. Subterfuge Speciality in ([Victim's Name]).
    3. Interdisciplinary Speciality ([Victim's Name]).
    4. He has full access to the victim's memories.
    5. He gets the ability to apply his Eidetic Memory to his victim's memories.
    6. He never has to roll Subterfuge to impersonate his victim unless he would take penalties due to intimate familiarity.
    7. He picks up to [Subterfuge + Wits] questions that could be answered by the user of a Supernatural Advantage, and chooses the answers to those questions; anyone who uses a Supernatural Advantage to ask those questions gets those answers instead of the truth. They do not get a Clash of Wills to oppose this power unless they also have some Advantage that allows them to automatically detect lies.
    8. He may spend 1 Willpower Reflexively to change the answer of one of the questions he's lying to through 7; he may increase the cost by 1 Essence to change the answers of up to 3 questions.
This enhanced disguise only lasts for about a month before starting to tatter; after one month, "Jack" loses benefits 3, 5, and 8 from the above list, and reduces his Alternate Identity to two dots. In addition, he has to roll Subterfuge to impersonate his victim if he would take any penalties to his rolls due to familiarity. Finally, pick [Wits] questions he provided answers for due to 7, and discard them.

After the second month, he reduces the Alternate Identity to one dot, and loses all the other benefits of this power; these scraps of an identity last for one more month before dissipating entirely.

If "Jack" were to ever teach his skin-thieving method to another person, he could theoretically teach them "Bathing In Human Sewage" as well; it would cost the other character a total of 10 XP. Bathing in Human Sewage was developed over time to fit "Jack"'s needs, and so may not give its full advantages to anyone else who learns it; the user does not gain any Merits they lack the prerequisites for, and obviously get no benefit from 5 unless they have the Eidetic Memory merit.

He's short-statted because of aging; I used the Mirrors aging rules to trade a dot of Physical stats for a few dots of social merits.

Any other thoughts on Saucy Jack?

His stats seem off for some reason... Looks like you spent 5/4/2 dots originally (instead of 5/4/3), and you added what looks like 2 dots of Stats (1 Mental and 1 Social) to experience purchases? Why did you short Physicals a dot originally?

EDIT: Ahhh... Small Framed is probably the reason... Missed it on first read through.

While those questions might not be ones you're interested/capable of answering, I think the easiest one is: Why do you think he stopped killing in London when he did?

As for skins he's stolen, I'd appreciate some very contemporary victims. Interesting examples of what he might define as filth, which may violate our (more forgiving?) standards of morality. Like I wouldn't be surprised if he killed say, a prostitute, since people unfortunately vilify them anyway, but why would he kill the devout mother of two who does philanthropic work? The elderly gentleman who plays a charming game of chess with anyone who visits him in the park? Could be fun stuff.
    You know, finding this again:

His "main" prey are the homeless and prostitutes, and there are tons of unexplained murders in England. He probably left London when it became too heated for him; he likes the attention, of course, but there's such a thing as too much of a good thing. But he could have wandered England for a while, or maybe he could've gone overseas to, say, India for a while. Who knows? He probably wouldn't remember at this point.

    From his point of view:

That mother of two is a filthy papist Catholic. She shows her legs and arms in public like a whore, and shows none of the proper docility. Why, she doesn't even have a husband! Nothing but filth.
That "gentleman" is a known homosexual; it's appalling that nothing is done about him!
That pastor touches children, that man over there is impolite and slovenly; that young lady is practically naked and is working to seduce that young man (who lacks a trade; such lazy filth.)

He came from a culture with very strict morals, few of which make sense to us. Like, what's wrong with wearing shorts? And he was an extremist even back then; where others would sniff, he would murder and butcher and leave organs lying around as "edifying lessons".

Oh, and I apparently forgot to post how long Jack the Ripper's "Talismans" last - he has to renew once every three months at the longest; he usually renews after one or two months unless he's lying low.

It's amazing how well you blend into the statistical background when you've been part of it for over a century.

Thank you! Any particular examples of skins he's stolen you want?

Remember, his definition of "human filth" applies to almost everyone these days, simply because of moral drift.

Amazing job on this one, I really like it. I'm tempted to use him in a 2e Mage game, depending on how the London Consilium looks.

She's my standard example - or will be. Vicky actually happens to be an American studying abroad in England (mainly because I came up with that GSAT aspiration, and I'm sticking with it).

So, one night Vicky here was walking along when this little old man just comes up and stabs her in the side. A little butchering later, Saucy Jacky's got a new disguise.

By default, his Attributes and skills are replaced by the following:

    Attributes:
    Strength ••
    Stamina •••
    Dexterity ••

    Intelligence •••
    Wits ••

He retains all of his Merits, but is otherwise a spitting image of Vicky. If he spends 1 Willpower when taking Vicky's shape, his Attributes and Skills look more like:

    Attributes:
    Strength ••
    Stamina •••
    Dexterity •••

    Intelligence •••
    Wits ••••
    Resolve •••

A small boost, but a noticeable one; he has the best portions of both people, as it were.

Let's say he spends 1 Willpower Dot when dismembering her to trigger Bathing in Human Sewage; he gets a nice group of benefits, mostly in the form of the Alternate Identity (Vickie "Victim" McVictimson) ••• merit and a (Vickie "Victim" McVictimson) speciality for Subterfuge. Amusingly, he has a better chance of acing/passing the GSATs than she does. Less amusingly, he can fox 7 questions coming from Supernatural sources.

He chooses a pretty standard set:

Is your character telling the truth? Yes.
Is your character supernatural or otherwise not human? No.
What is your character hiding? Nothing; everything's in the open.
Is your character going to attack? No.
What is your character's attention most focused on? Nothing in particular.
What does your character want right now? To be left alone.
What does your character know about killing? Nothing she didn't see on the TV.

If he needs to change those answers at a later date, spending 1 Willpower reflexively does it just dandy.

Also, as a general note, only people who know Vickie intimately notice anything is wrong, or the gaps in Saucy Jacky's act; heck, with a Wits+Subterfuge roll, he can cover up any odd behaviour (like heading out to dig in the garden at 3 AM, or slipping a Mickey Finn in a colleague's drink before their "disappearance").

    I did a quick revision.

I shifted a dot of Intelligence to Wits, added 12xp (using 2e costs) worth of extra Aspects he's picked up over the years, and I improved Bathing in Human Sewage (both because it was kinda naff before, and because now he can sneak up on someone with supernatural senses without setting of sirens.)

Ideally, Saucy Jacky here should be played more for paranoia than as a straightforward monster; he could be played as a particularly potent Slasher if you want to go that direction.

Actually, that might be interesting; a Slasher Compact, maybe called Jack's Boys, made up of copycat killers. I see it being made up of a bunch of Charmers, Legends, and Chameleons, as well as their Scourge equivalents.

I don't see it intersecting with the Hunt Club too much; their ultimate "goal" is to perfect their murder methods and "transcend" to the same "apex" status as Jack the Ripper. After all, his kill count is, by now, several hundred people (if you go by his age and the fact that he needs to kill someone once every one or two months to keep his shapeshifting....) by conservative estimates.

We're just lucky he hasn't chosen an apprentice. Yet.

If you want to make him an unusually powerful Slasher, I suggest giving him the benefits and drawbacks of being a GMC Chameleon, and replacing his dot of "Supernatural Tolerance" with Nightmare. In this case, the Tell he takes because of his Telltale Sign Frailty matches the Tell for his shape-shifting.

Unlike a normal Boogeyman, he replaces Not of your World with Profane Prejudice targeted towards "human filth".
