  • Siren: The Surfacing (nWoD Abandoned Fangame Resurrection)

Hello everyone, I've been lurking on these forums and the RPG.net forums abit and loved how ideas for fangames were blossoming at these places, so if it's ok, I've been hoping to bring an idea up that's not entirely my own. Kind of going with the other thread I've made about continuing abandoned fanmade games, I've gotten the "oks" from the three closest creators of this fangame.

Simply put, this fangame had alot of work put into it, and yet it suddenly cut off in 2014. There's just so much work in this that it'd be a waste to not finish it. That, and perhaps how other people might like the ideas this could bring. So I present to you all, Siren the Surfacing. I'll post the thread here, and there's a round up post of ideas as the second to last post in the thread, but for those not wanting to read all that, I'll post a shortened version after the link.

I must note that Theme and Mood are the impressions I got from it and that I added abit of extra text purely for appearance, but everything is as it appeared in the thread. Siren is based off of mermaid mythos and stories, and as far as I know of the thread, your mermaid form doesn't have to have a fish tail. You can be like Octodad in that form if you want. :3

    Siren the Drowning
Do you remember the day you heard that beautiful noise? You’ve never recalled from where you’ve heard it, but it always had that twinge of nostalgia to it, like it was there your whole life and just now you’re hearing it. Night after night, you hear it at the same time. 8PM sharp. And each night you can swear that you can begin to hear where it’s coming from.

However, since the new factory has moved in and polluting the river, the song has become abit twisted. It added a pitch of sorrow of where there was joy. A twinge of pain where there was bliss. The song has become corrupted, like nails on a chalkboard, but still you hear it. It calls you to the lake. Just walk right in. Become one with the music. Dive your head underwater and breathe for the first time.

You are now another voice within the Song, that treads the boundaries of civilization and nature, that tries to unite them in harmony in spite that the harmony can never be. Welcome to the world of Sirens. It’s better down where it’s wetter indeed.

    Theme: Irreconcilable Balance
The world is just one great big ecosystem where everything gives to another to thrive, no matter how someone else put it. However, mankind has made many advances which set them apart from nature, with the power to tear it away as well. Nature just as well is untamable, and can tear apart what mankind creates with a simple natural disaster. Just as land and sea remain separate and tear into each other equally, so to do civilization and nature tear into each other. This is simply the natural order of things, as boundaries between the two must be upheld. Those that don’t uphold either wish to destroy nature, help nature reclaim itself, or simply drown it all down under the Deluge to truly become one...and annihlate all life as we knowit.

Mood: Survival The life of a Siren is usually a fight to survive, to continue being able to exist as they do. For most Sirens, they fight to keep a peace of mind, to cling to their relationships alive and keep up their connections between Civilization and Nature. Even the Abyssal Currents cling to some notion of the above to keep themselves sane. And a Siren who wishes to avoid the encompassing future of the Deluge must work against that to keep everything they love alive.

Keeping the old alive isn’t the only meaning of Survival for a Siren. A Siren can also adapt and change. She may make new connections of her own, and to replace the old where they don’t apply anymore. A Siren who fails to adapt and survive falls into sterility and decay, eventually becoming a Banshee who can only vocalize woe and despair.

    Inherent Axis: Waters
Each Siren embraces an archetype close to their nature that embodies how they’ll become. When they surface in the Deluge, the prospective Siren finds herself within the Waters that the Archetype she fits best in and thus points out the Opuses she's capable of working.
Polaria: The Waters of Frozen Hearts. They’re associated with the dark and unexplored depths and the succubi whose icy song lead sailors to their doom. They have affinity for the Opuses of Darkness, Death and Freeze.
Vaporia: The Waters of Formless Auroras. These Sirens embody the ideals akin to a wandering troubadour, those who appear in lives to help or hinder before disappearing like the breeze. They have affinity for the Opuses of Wind, Sky and Pressure.
Tropicana: The Waters of Bright Passions. They are the Sirens who are celebrants of life, giving power and love and working to gain them in turn. They have affinity for the Opuses of Light, Passion and Temper.
Gardenia: The Waters of Tectonic Movements. Tempered like the Monsoon season, these Sirens seek to keep the waters flowing and the earth turning, upholding natural law as they should. They have affinity for the Opuses of Earth, Animal and Growth.
Freshwater: The Waters of Sapient Breaths. All fresh water in the world attributes to this Water, and it being the water closest to humanity, so too are these sirens equally close. They have affinity for the Opuses of Technology, Human and Fate.
Discordia: The Waters of Brewing Ruin. These waters drew in the damaged of humanity, be they those that hurt others or those wracked by the despair of their life. They're more drawn to the Abyssal Currents and they have affinity for the Opuses of Blood, Taint and Chaos.

A group of Sirens working together could be known as Shoals, like Changeling Motleys or Vampire Coteries.

    Outside Axis: Currents
If the Ocean is what a Siren is a part of, then it’s the Current that declares what she follows. The Celestial Oceans are as such.
Conflict: The Raging Current that fights for the oceans of the world.
Harmony: The Current of Goodwill seeks to enact harmony where she may, bringing land and sea together without destroying them in the process.
Healing: The Healing Waters heals man and beast alike.
Wisdom: The Drops of Knowledge seek to find such wherever they look.
Buoyancy: The Winding Current bobs all over the place, seeking to act through deceit and trickery.

Although the Five Currents are common for Sirens, the ocean still heralds untold depths. And like the depths, some things should be kept in them. These are known as the Abyssal Currents, and the Sirens that follow them are known as Abyssal Sirens.

Acheron: The Current of the Void decided that it's time for everything to end. They believe it's best that nature and humanity should die and fade away.
Cocytus: The Current of Dark Wisdom is like it’s counterpart, but it searches deeper and darker than the Current of Wisdom would search. The Current of Dark Secrets searches for taboos, things heresy to harmony and occult secrets all others fear to touch.
Lethe: The Current of Mankind's Victory believes that Mankind is in the right, that petty boundaries of harmony and nature shouldn’t keep humanity’s ambition shackled. They seek to destroy nature under a wave of pollution.
Phelegethon: The Current of Dark Passions seek to indulge in their darker passions. Rage, hate, fear, despair, anything that gives power to a destructive impulse.
Styx: The Current of Primordial Darkness believes that mankind’s time has passed, and that it’s better for nature to gather itself up and reclaim itself before it’s torn apart by the mud monkeys.

    Morality Stat: Lucidity
Lucidity (once known as Serenity) had been argued that it should represent harmony, the boundary between civilization and nature or to represent irreconsilable opposites (absolutes would be loved by Sirens), but the round up post explains it best, that it should be some mixture of the three.

    Supernatural Advantage: Akashic Record
As far as I've looked, nothing wholesomely covers what Akasha can do, but from snippets on the thread ideas are that it governs how much Breath you can have, how long you can remain in mermaid/human form, how drawbacks on 6 dots and up can include requiring to stay in water for an amount of time.

    Fuel Stat: Pneuma
Sirens are known to attract many a sailor in myth, as well as stealing voices or souls because they lack their own. Pneuma is what Sirens use to power their Verses, their abilities to transform themselves and the like. A Siren regains Pneuma from a human by either stealing his voice or killing to regain all breath (this covers a Succubi trope as well as Siren). It has been talked about to regain Breath through transforming when you desperately need it, at the cost of feeling your siren nature take over. Pneuma may also be regained by partaking in a type of love. What it is, it doesn't matter, so long as the Siren can at least see some significant manner of it, she can regain Pneuma. For Pneuma is the Breath of Life.

The Siren nature taking over part has been discussed. It is known as Maelstrom. When a Siren partakes in a love she has, she endangers it by the level of intensity she can love it. It's more than just love. It's obsession. It's a reason why Sirens are enamoured with humanity and keep themselves away from it, because one night she might grow obsessed enough to take their beloved and drown them in the nearest lake until the bubbles stop coming...

    Powers: Verses
Powered by Pneuma, the Sirens form their powers on the basis of song. Verses are what Sirens use for powers to affect certain parameters. How much they target is decided by the Introduction of the Verse. What they're affecting or targeting is decided by the Opus of the Verse. How they're affecting it is decided by the Conclusion of the Verse. Introductions include Self, Object, Target, Group and Area. Opuses include Water, Sound, Beauty, and all Opuses the Waters favor. Conclusions include Protect, Restore, Calm, Travel, Sense, Disturb, Transform, Control, Invoke, and Destroy.

Antagonists: The Abyssal Sirens serve as one, even against each other. But even darker things exist in the depths…

Within the Deeps of the Deluge lies a great sunken ruin. Many Sirens live here, darkened and deadened. They speak in quiet snippets of song while monstrous things follow them, heeling and playing like dogs. All of these are Echidna’s children.

Nobody is sure of what the great Echidna is or came from. Some say she is a Siren whose lost all Serenity, or something altogether stranger. Whatever the case is, she seeks sea creature and human alike to tear and splice apart their DNA to breed a new monster to bring more people down to her. Those who follow her speak in quiet tones, praising her as a god while dragging everything screaming to her until they too are changed…
Why is she doing this? It’s out of love. She says she’s breeding a new race out of humanity. She says that it will survive the apocalypse.

Other than Echidna, there are also the Flensers and the Furies. Flensers are made up of mortal fishermen and women who have knowledge of a dirty secret....of how Sirens flesh can sustain their youth. They also embody mankind's ambition to transgress all boundaries no matter what the harm can be caused. They know what they do makes more Siren surface....so they do it to hunt them down to keep up their immortality. On the other hand, Furies are filled with Nature's rage at it's own defilement, they seek to let nature recover from mankind's intrusions and when too much has been invited onto an area, they, along with whatever else they command (mostly beasts) seek to destroy all that enters save nature, at least until their rage cools.

The Deluge: This is where all Sirens see upon surfacing. It holds every possible future, every timeline....and it's also the end of time and where Echidna resides. This is a future that is preventable however, but it'll take alot of work to do so...

The First time I saw this I had only one thing in mind: The Deluge is the Future. The Earth is doomed to be destroyed by the seas, and the Sirens can tap (Time Travel even) to a dimension where the World is Drowned, a future where the only inhabitants of the world are the Abyssal form that grew to conquer the World. As I see, The Deluge is the Future, the unstopabble end.

P.S: at least that was my thougth

Actually, it was discussed abit in the forum thread that the Deluge could both be what everything once was and what everything could be. It was also said that, with the Deluge looking like everything covered in water that it takes the theme of Harmony abit further. The Deluge is what would be if you wanted to bring things together but it would only end in ruin. So yes, it fits the "once past and maybe future" part.

If it further helps, the darker and deeper parts of the Deluge would be called "The Deep", which is supposedly where Echidna resides and could be an exploratory part of the game.

I liked the Idea of Time Travelling Sirens, I'd buy that... With the Idea of Current and Tides making refenrece to oceanic aspects as much as Time aspects. Harmony is harder to achieve when you realize the future is fucked up. So, you need to work hard enough to prevent that future.

Also, Echidna/The Dark Mother living in the depths of the Deluge would be such a nice thing.

Have there been any concrete rules for Streams? Because I have a semi-sorta idea for how you could do a "keep them balanced" thing with them.

I have decided, after some thought, that I don't really feel happy on these forums. I might decide to come back to post. Who knows - but right now, I'm gone.

So good bye, good luck, and have a nice day.

Hrm. I'm sorry if I'm sounding bad and not getting the point you're trying to make (Sirens being tied to Time as well as the Oceans because most of the WoD lines (Fangames included) have some basis for the powers based on real life stories/myths on the creature, but there's almost nothing on Sirens and a connection to Time. Almost.), but I've gotten an idea from it after abit of looking up. To make this not TL;DR, I'm going to put them into spoiler boxes.

This idea is abit based off of the idea of Aphrodite's birth in the sea, which came when Khronos/Saturn (the Greek God/Titan of Time) cut off Ouranos/Uranus's reproductive parts and from the blood dripping into the sea came Aphrodite.

Ideas on the Deluge being a "Cut off Future":
What if the Deluge was a cut off future? What if it's a "What if" scenario when it comes to everything being mashed together, being exactly what the Sirens (at least, all of the sane ones) would want to avoid? It's essentially what the world would look like before the end and if drowned, hence why Echidna wants to create a new race of beings/sirens is to survive it.This fits the "Cut off by Time" theme. I don't know how to explain it further, or if it needs explaining, especially since one great theme to go along with oceans would be "Mystery". I still kind of like the one idea of "Sirens version of the Astral Plane".

Idea on Deluge being how Sirens see the Astral Plane:
Actually, that could also be explainable. The Astral Plane doesn't translate at the same time that the real world does, and with the three examples I mentioned, the plane differs depending on the supernatural looking at it. Princesses see it as where everything is connected and changes on a second to second basis (for those who don't know, Magical Girls in the WoD). Mages see it in three-five different sections and everything connected only by symbology. Changelings see it as interconnecting threads between both human dreams (meaning in Mage terms that they go between Oneiros alot). Perhaps one theme that remains constant is that the Astral is the soul of humanity and every thought, dream, idea, and part of it, and that it changes depending on the splat looking at it. Perhaps more importantly, it also deals with how the splat in question relates to humanity.

The idea here is that, bringing the idea of "cut off from time" and stuff, what if the Deluge is how the Sirens view the Astral, except it's much more heavy into the "Anima Mundi" part, which emphasizes the world's soul as a whole (humanity's impact on the earth? The Deluge shows the world, everyone and everything as being drowned underneath loads of water because it's dealing with the world as a whole rather than individually, and as such is actually showing the damages it's suffering. It still fits with the "Cut off from time" theme, if due to it not running at the same time as earth time does. Perhaps it also still fits with the "bad future" idea too, since as the world as a whole percieves it, this could be how the world's soul percieves that it's gonna end up: Drowning under it's own filth and waste. It also adds some emphasis to Echidna's desire to help humanity survive.

Suddenly new idea. The Deluge has sections. The Surface is the top of the Deluge with an endless sky filled where human thoughts come up to like bubbles rising up. The Reef is where the lines of human history lie like stories or books, each reef growing as history goes on, and all kinds of material can make it up. The Twilight Zone is where the light above begins to die, as well as where a Siren usually enters the Deluge. And finally, the Deep/Depths/Abyssal Zone, where Echidna holds some provinces and the Abyssal sirens retreat to. I think the Surface and Reef themes fit well if in connecting to Humanity as well as "The Little Mermaid" story.

Idea on Echidna fitting into all of this:
So about the cutoff by time theme. It's not ultimately said or explained what Echidna is at all, just that she's connected to Sirens and creates monsters by mashing together fish and human DNA. Here's something I would find fitting as an idea for Echidna. She's the Ouranos in the story above, and whomever is patron/matron to the Sirens is the Aphrodite. It's said in the forum that Echidna only takes the people she's captured and fish and puts them together, often into different combonations to see what would result. In other words, she can rearrange and change, but she cannot truly create new things. Like Ouranos in the story, she might've been rendered unable to reproduce.

Perhaps I shouldn't say anything on her due to lack of a proper backstory on Sirens, but ideas I have currently are based around the "Khronos(???) usurps Ouranos(Echidna) and makes him unable to reproduce, the last remains of his ability to do so becoming Aphrodite (Sirens). Any further thoughts?

As for Streams. There's no official powers or rules made for Streams really, only generic guidelines. Perhaps the closest to any powers comes the Antedeluvian Symphony, in which the very last post on the first thread for Sirens only has a generic outline of what each power level would do. Perhaps to note, like with all gamelines, the powers needs to be fitting for the splat to have. For example, nowhere will anyone see any powers dealing with fire for Sirens as no material on them has them being able to do that. Other than that, feel free to shoot your ideas up. :3

I'm so sorry if I'm doing bad in responding, this is my first time bringing up ideas and leading a fansplat, so please tell me if I'm doing something wrong at all.

And I should totally be studying for finals but I got ideas after seeing the messages being posted. And studying is soul sucking.

I get it, maybe i'm the one that am going too far. I like to make connections between the gamelines and something that is completely new to the creature, not originaly related, (Prometheans and Alchemy, for example). Now, the Sirens try to bring Harmonia to the world, a little bit like the Werewolves, but differently. I thought that, their connection to the water and Currents, alongside with a little extra (Currents of Time) and the World being Drowned by the Deluge, they could access this time in History (Drowned Future) by their connection to the water currents and the Time River (just references). For me, Water and Time can be related, like suggest some philosophies and such.

As for the Idea of the Deluge being the Astral Plane: I don't believe that one is exclusive to the other. The Deluge IS an/the Astral Plane hence it still did not Happened, but it MAY be a representation of the Future. The Sirens may be sure that it is the Future and that they need to stop it, which may or may not be the truth.

Echidna as an Antagonist and Her Creations being a deformed version of a Siren (Cacophonies) is a idea that's been around my mind,

And I'm also new at this, but you're doing great.

AH. Now I see from the comparison of Prometheans and Alchemy. It would also make much more sense with the Siren's power stat being named Akasha, whose definition is an etheric field where past events are recorded. Alright, I can see your reasoning and it working, sorry for the confusion on my part.

Perhaps Cacophonies serve the same function as most antagonist splats (Pandorans, Darkened, Clockstoppers) do? Hrm...if I may suggest as an idea, what if Cacophonies is the name of their powers and Vodianoi are the name of the children proper? The name "Vodianoi" comes from the name of Slavic water spirits who lived in palaces of sunken ships, were covered with hair, scales and slime and hated the boldness of humans to which they'd drown them and keep a few as slaves.

And yes, there's a tad bit of overlap with Werewolf the Forsaken, as they both somewhat deal with conservation themes. I believe the difference brought up was that Sirens ultimately deal with mundane concerns over the spiritual ones that all Werewolves deal with. Another idea was the idea that not all Sirens had an "Aquatic Form" like wolves do with their forms. I don't like the latter idea to be abit honest.

Good, I like the Vodianoi idea! Still thinking a way we coul use banshees.

I believe that every Siren would need a mashup with some other form of oceanic life. And I believe they should have a Aquatic form, but that they could only manifest under water or in the Deluge, or with a proper Cacophonie.

I Was wondering, do Sirens start off as humans and find out their origin after, like a lineage? or they are born inside the Culture.

                      I'm glad you like it.

As for the said mashup, I've been thinking on that. Given that the Inherent and Social/External Axises were posted as they were written, I was toying with the idea that maybe Oceans should serve as the Internal Axis and Currents could be the Social Axis. Sirens could take features of animals most known for living in said oceans (like Arctica Sirens having some natural antifreeze like fishes do down in the Antarctic Ocean that makes them immune to cold environmental factors). Not to mention since Social Axises can be changed, it just sounds better to have Currents be them, since Currents are known for moving about and exchanging etc etc. The only problem then becomes the Abyssal Currents and what to do with them. Perhaps renaming them to "Abyssal Rivers/Oceans" and rename them after mythical rivers/oceans? I can imagine them being named after the Greek Rivers of Hades.:

Dark Passions: Phelegethon, the River of Boiling Blood - As emotions boil the blood of others, these sirens seek to make the vessels burst forth in destruction.
Dark Secrets: Cocytus, the River of Lamentation - The gain of knowledge is a loss of innocence, and these sirens seek to lose it all in search of their secrets.
Mankind's Victory: Lethe, the River of Forgetfulness - Just as mankind forgot about nature after the Industrial Revolution, so too do these sirens believe they must forget nature and wipe it all out.
Primordial Darkness: Styx, the River of Hate - These sirens have boiled to hatred of all civilized society, and in turn they seek to wipe it all away so nature may cleanse itself.

It's not quite clear how Sirens come to be. What I do get is that Sirens hear "The Song" which calls them to their nature. In a sense, it might be somewhat like how Werewolves experience the first change, but not as violent? I don't have any ideas for this.

EDIT: Perhaps the most obvious thing that all Sirens have is the ability to breath underwater indefinitely. And after reading the one thread, I got an idea for a Stream. Perhaps it should be a Stream the Current of Dark Passions recieves.

Stream of Dead Tales: The Sirens ability to command the dead and force them to cough up their bounty.

Here comes my two cents and overral critics of what I find of the Splat (know that first I read all the discussion on the other thread):

                        Theme: Irreconcilable Balance
                        I Like it. Lots.

                        Mood: Tempting Absolutes.
I believe it needs Work, the Absolutes may truly be tempting, but they would not define the urge to stop the "may be" future that is the Deluge, I believe that it this aspect could be worked on as we progress.

                        Inherent Axis: Oceans
Didn't like the names and at first they didn't sound that Inherent to me. I mean, nature rarely changes, but sometimes you take a diferente approach on your objective. I don't know, maybe i'm being silly. I Mean, an Atlantic Siren may be a Warrior already, so the Conflict Current becomes redundant. I Suppose people are BORN Sirens, they just don't know, therefore, they have ancestrals that were Siren. What if the Inherent Axis would be Ancestrality? Like, What Clan, Subrace, Species of Siren do you descend from? that way we could give real inherent differences because of the "genetics". Don't know, just an idea. So if your ancestral Family comes from the Artic, you have Aspect from the marine fauna from there, and so it goes on...

                        Social Axis: Currents
Liked, they seem very good, would work on the Names, tough. hehehehe.

                        Morality Stat: Serenity
I would go further, Why not have Harmony as morality?

                        Supernatural Stat: Akasha
Yes, that's what I mean, although none of the guys went with the Time Travel, Time River thing. As we could work Sirens are creatures inherently connected to the Time River (The Khronos in our Story), and swim trough it. Akasha coul represent the connection to the Past and Future, or something like this.

                        Fuel: Breath
I don't have an opinion about it yet.

                        Powers: Streams
Actually, I would divide the powers in two sets, one: The Streams are the powers that range from 1 to 5 and need to be bought progressively. The other set of powers is like the Demon form in D:tD. You buy a group of aspects to be your Aquatic Form or True Form: Tentacles, Eletric pulse, Bioluminescence, etc...

                        Antagonists: Vodianoi, for now.

The Deluge: I'm preparing a big document on it.

Damm, one second too late. Was reworking the Abyssals and saw your post. Also nice touch with the Greek names. I'm bought.

Also, my rework of Streams, critics needed.

                            Stream of the Sunken Ship:
The Siren’s Song. The ability to control human minds and Desires, Emotions.
Stream of the Underwater Senses: The Siren’s Sight. The ability to enhance perceptions of the World for herself and others.
Stream of the Rusted Iron: The Siren’s ties to Time, the ability of aging Human tech and Rusting Iron to easily destroy objects.
Stream of the Breaking Waves: The Siren’s Arsenal. Turn the wrath of the sea onto your enemies.
Stream of the Choleric Sky: The Siren’s Ability to command weather and Storms.
Stream of the Raging Earth: The Sirens influence on the movement of the earth.
Stream of the Healing Waters: The Siren’s ability to Heal itself using any body of water
                            Stream of the Flood:
The Siren’s ability to interact with the Deluge from reality.

Mostly name changes, but some core changes that I thougth would fit... also, for the new Abyssal Rivers:

Dark Passions: Stream of the Boiling Blood: Blood is a lot of Water, of course we can control it.
Dark Secrets: Stream of the Sunken Body: Control Emotions is never as powerful as controling the Deep Fears
Mankind's Victory: Stream of the Ironborn: Polluting is the solution.
Primordial Darkness: Stream of the Raging Nature: Floods, Tsunamis, even Drought. Humans had their time, Let the Deluge come.

Hrm, I know that a few of these are renames of some of the current streams, but to be honest, I sort of liked the older names abit better. Also, there's fewer Streams than the ones posted.
Sunken Ship: I liked the name of "Sunken Melody" abit better, if because it does show the connection between Sirens and song. The name is abit misleading, implying that it has to do more with capsizing ships than controlling human minds and emotions.
Rusted Iron: I believe that originally this was meant to be something having to do with controlling technology and the like. It would be amazingly useful if not only your song lead to sailors coming towards you, but also using this to make their ship change course without any input from the sailors to you. I also believe that the Time aspect could be made into it's own stream.
Breaking Waves: I don't have any complaints, the name change is better I feel.
Choleric Sky and Raging Earth: Renames to Indefatigable Cycles and Geological Schism. On one hand, I like the old names, but on the other it may be annoying to spell out "Indefatigable" for some people.
Healing Waters: I take it that it's a redo of the Stream of Submergence? Perhaps the only problem I have is that it can affect less than it once could. Although then again I can see making a separate Stream dealing with "Submerging" aspects of things, even bringing people along.
Flood: Antedeluvian Symphony. Sort of the same issue with Choleric Sky and Raging Earth.

I think I'll make a Google Doc for the supplement.
