  • Night Horrors: Conquering Heroes errata

Please list any errata you have found in Conquering Heroes.

Usual rules apply: this is about actual errors. Typos, obvious inconsistencies, text covered by images, missing material, etc. If there's a sentence you personally would have worded differently, that's not errata, that's opinion.

Willpower is not a stat you add to die pools. Page Specifics coming soon.

    EDIT

Pg. 98: Primordial Seas: The Insatiable suffers a -2 penalty to Willpower and Social rolls but gains an additional dot of Strength and Wits.
    Resistance Rolls, maybe?

Pg. 100: The Storyteller then makes an extended and contested roll using the Insatiable’s Strength + Satiety versus the Beast’s Composure + Willpower.
    Resolve, I assume.

pp. 2–7, opening story: Some of the text is supposed to be bold and/or italic, but the font doesn’t represent it, or it got lost in layout; there’s a few places where the text just doesn’t make sense without some kind of visual differentiation. Mostly it's from page 3 onward, but there might be words before that that are meant to be emphasized. (I think the same error came up in the core with the full page stories; it's the same font). I imagine there's a raw draft to check, but just in case, I think these are the parts that should be offset:
      • Count the seconds after the thunder.
      • Vince had time to think but you’re dead, Mom before he realized she was dead.
      • Count the seconds after the thunder, and you can tell how far away the storm is.
      • Yes, his mother said, that one.
      • So many storms, Vincent.
      • No, said his mother. But they’re near. Count. Count the seconds, find the storms.
      • I’m scared, Mom.
      • What?
      • You have nothing to be afraid of. They aren’t really real.
      p. 8, Credits: The Editor’s name is missing.
      p. 13: The Walt Disney attribution should have an em-dash to conform with the other chapter quotes
      p. 13: "Two themes pervade this book;" – should be a colon
      p. 13: "Instead, those who take on these monsters are the heroes and the creatures found within these pages are the ones who need conquering." I can’t parse this. There might be another “who” missing between pages and are?
      p. 20 and 21, sidebars: The font for the headers makes the colon characters invisible.
      p. 25: "...her mistress’ mental control..." – should be mistress’s
      p. 64: Heart of Darkness should be in italics
      p. 94: Warm Bodies should be in italics
      p. 94: Behind the big chapter header, there’s another visible header that also says “Chapter Three: Insatiable”
      p. 98: "...minus -2 penalty to Willpower and Social rolls..." – Willpower isn’t rolled; should be Resolve + Composure? Edit: From what Satchel wrote, I think it's supposed to be Resolve.
Back cover: Ugalla should be Ugallu

p.48: "Shepherd's Gaze" references Nightmares triggering when a sleeper wakes; unless the wording in the Beast core rulebook was meant differently, a delayed Nightmare takes effect when its target next goes to sleep. Also, the dice pool for the power does not specify whether the Finesse Attribute used is the Hero's highest Finesse Attribute or uses an Attribute that is fixed when gaining the Gift, and as a contested power the Beast's Lair should contribute to the opposing roll.

p.74-75: The Empyrean Swimmer has Bane Sense, but its bane as described is not a valid bane as the ephemeral being mechanics define it and it cannot be used in most of the ways banes are used — most notably, it is not something that the Swimmer can touch and suffer damage from. As written, it's an extra ban.

p.98 and 100: Willpower is listed as an individual component of multiple dice pools; most "Willpower rolls" in the established system are rolls of Resolve + Composure, as Willpower is not normally a rolled Trait and rolls that use the Willpower pool's current total, though rare, are typically explicit about this rather than risk confusion by naming an Attribute Task with a derived Trait. Further, the pool to contest Subversion of Contentment is listed as Composure + Willpower, which is unclear as to whether this means Resolve + Composure + Composure or Composure + Current Willpower.

p.98: Apart from simplified feeding criteria and the narrative effects of warping their surroundings and attracting supernatural beings, "all the bonuses that a Beast gains during the Merger" are part of a variable set of benefits whose number is determined by the former Lair rating of a Rampant Beast, including any bonuses to detecting ambushes; the Insatiable specifically have a Lair rating of 0 unless they have stolen a Lair from a Beast. If they acquire these bonuses dynamically with the acquisition of a Lair, this should probably be specified.

p.99: "Impossible Anatomy" refers to "extraordinary success," which is not an existing systems term. Should be "exceptional success."

p.101: "The Insatiable and the Ephemeral" sidebar references ephemeral beings gaining the ability to "sense the presence of the area." Unless there is a missing word or part of this sentence specifying how this relates to the usual state of Twilight and/or Manifestation Conditions, this phrase does not denote any modification to the normal abilities of ephemeral beings in an area.

p.102: "Cast Aside" references the Staggered Tilt, which does not exist in any other books and does not have its mechanical effects described. "The Burning" does likewise with the Paralyzed Tilt. Existing Tilts like Stunned or Immobilized or Insensate may be mechanically analogous, but new Tilts should ideally have at least some mechanical description.

p.103: "We Can See Your Insides" references the "Sickened" Tilt. If this is not mechanically analogous to the "Sick" Tilt (as inflicted by entering a Den) or the effects of the "fetid aura" imbued by Foul Mess, this is the same problem as exists in the Esurients listed on p.102 above.

p.105 and 112: Terminological inconsistency in character descriptions. "Horrific form" instead of "Horrible Form."

p.112: Colette's Moment is listed as "Frozen Hell" despite that Moment being called "Freezing Hell" everywhere else in the chapter.

Bookmarks: The first bookmark titles the book as "Night Horros"
          p. 9: the Silversmith -- the should be capitalized
          p. 9: —Lightseeker -- needs a space after the dash
          p. 9: —the Dream Killer -- space after dash
          p. 10: the Sentinel -- caps
          p. 11: the Unrelenting Clown -- caps
          p. 11: the Blitz Boy -- caps

          p. 100: "The Storyteller then makes an extended and contested roll using the Insatiable’s Strength + Satiety versus the Beast’s Composure + Willpower. For each point of Satiety above 5 the Beast has, her player receives a -1 penalty to her roll, and for each point below 5, he receives a +1 bonus. For each success the Insatiable achieves, they move the Beast’s Composure or Presence down by 1. When both Attributes reach zero, the Insatiable successfully subverts the Beast’s consciousness and gains control for one hour for each point of Satiety the Beast has."

It's unclear what the Beast's contested roll is meant to do here: is it meant to subtract successes from the Insatiable's successes? If so, that isn't the default resolution for contested rolls (the CofD core actually specifically says that's not how it works). It doesn't say what happens if the Beast exceeds the Insatiable; as written, the Beast isn't actually doing anything. And technically, this should be a resisted roll (subtracting a Resistance Attribute from the Insatiable's pool) since number of successes count; that's the rule of thumb.

Also, as Satchel noted above, Willpower is almost never rolled, especially paired with one of its own constituent Attributes. Perhaps it's meant to be Resolve + Composure (Resolve + Lair would also make sense, as it's more fitting with the way contested powers usually work).

Edit: From the system on the same page below, it seems that the intent is that the Beast is subtracting successes, but it should probably be clarified for the above (and what happens if the Beast wins), as it comes first. And Willpower + Lair is probably meant to be Resolve + Lair?

Pg. 24: The subsequent media coverage of her untrained, but astute, massage of victims’ emotions became a hit.
That should be message, though I'm having fun figuring out what exactly is going on with this particular phrasing.

Pg. 26: During a busy lunch rush at a diner, Danny found himself sharing his booth space with a stranger who seemed to be allergic to silence, a cute twentysomething who introduced himself as Ben.

                  EDIT: Apparently not a typo.

He's a Rampant Beast, so no. They lose those in the Merger.

The sidebar on p.112 makes it look like the Ventrue vampire suffers from the Masquerade weakness (specific type of prey) rather than the actual Requiem one (aloofness making it easier to lose touchstones).

It's been 12 years lads. Time to update your notes

Edit: not sure if it belongs in the errata or not, but how is Colette suppose to freeze her victims to death? Her Moment doesn't give her any such powers. One way around this would be to give her a Lair with the appropriate Trait, but since she needs to steal one, she couldn't have it when she killed her parents.

                            p. 5: "Somewhere in room he couldn’t see..." -- missing an a
                            p. 25: "When she does profile an innocent-seeming brood, childlike Beast, or unobtrusive Lair..." -- Lairs can't really be obtrusive, as they aren't physical places in the material world; they're only in the Primordial Dream. If Candy profiled a Lair, it would be overtly magical and otherworldly, which would be out of tone with her concept.
