Description: Often mistaken for a Hedgebeast by Seattle's changeling population, the Fog Kraken holds far stranger origins than the other monsters running freely in the city's Hedge. It is an Unfettered Horror, and its Hunger has been exploited by the True Fae, Magog, to discourage any attempts by the Lost to carve out a foothold in the Hedge. To date, none have encountered it and lived to tell the tale, and the number of changelings who have fallen to its predations continues to grow.

The Fog Kraken differs from many of its kind with its continued use of a Lair. The Retreat did not lead to its Chambers' collapse, and the Unfettered uses them as its refuge whenever it isn't roaming through the Dream or the Hedge. This anomaly may have been the result of the original Beast failing to become an Incarnate, or perhaps it is due instead to a potent connection to the Lair. Whatever the reason, the Unfettered has retained control over the elements raging within it, and it readily evokes them in its hunts.

Appearance: True to its name, the Fog Kraken takes the form of a massive octopus. It appears to have transparent flesh, and is constantly enveloped by a thick cloud of frigid mist that saps the life out of those who stray too close. A pair of lambent green eyes rests above its tentacles and beak-like maw, mesmerizing those who lock gazes with them.

Storytelling Hints: The Fog Kraken is an Unfettered devoid of the original Beast's personality, but it has retained a great deal of cunning and intelligence ffrom the Retreat. It chose to aid Magog for the opportunity to sate its Hunger, and has grown more powerful and dangerous over the years. Indeed, its continued survival has been a chief factor in the Others' influence over Seattle, and thus its destruction can potentially give the changelings leeway in organizing themselves at last.

    * -- Imposing Lair: The Fog Kraken can impose Lair Traits as if it was a Beast with an effective Lair equal to its Rank. Furthermore, it may spend five points of Essence to impose a given Trait in a non-resonant location.

** -- Monster's Arsenal: The Fog Kraken can use any aspect of the Atavism, and spends a point of Essence and Willpower to invoke the effects of Satiety Expenditure.

*** -- Waking Dream: The Unfettered warps the psychoactive landscape of the Hedge as if it were a changeling, substituting its Rank in place of Wyrd. Furthermore, it can Warp the Hedge with a dice pool of Power + Finesse + Rank.

Inspired by a small bit in the Changeling segment of Splintered City: Seattle, found in p. 65. As always, critique is welcome and appreciated.

Even the most powerful of monsters can be felled.

The bans and banes of the Shadow's spirit lords, the loopholes in oaths sworn by the True Fae, the touch of Paradox anathema to Supernal entities, and the myriad weaknesses of many other higher beings all give proof to this one statement. And the Unfettered that is the Fog Kraken is no exception to this rule.

Those Children who have studied the Horror know that it still makes use of its Lair even when its Retreat had been so long ago. They are aware that this has allowed it to retain the ability to impose its Chambers in places resonant to them. That Seattle and its local Hedge growth is receptive to its influence only heightens the danger this poses to any marked by its Hunger.

The true cause behind this holds the key to its defeat.

The Lair itself is another way to strike at the Kraken. It continues to be an anchor for its essence, as it had been before the Inheritance. If any seeking the Unfettered's demise were to discover this secret, manage to endure the Lair's many dangers, and breach deep enough to collapse its Heart, they could quickly shift things in favor of Seattle's Lost. Actually learning this, though, is easier said than done, as Magog is privy to the Lair's value and will work to derail any endeavors concerning it.

      -- --

A Heart in Mists -- The Fog Kraken's stats are unchanged, save for the addition of the Price of Power and Camouflage Numina. In the case of the former, the Heart of the Unfettered's Lair is its second Bane. Whatever harm is inflicted upon it directly affects the Kraken itself, thus making it an alternative route to victory in hunts against the Horror.

One way to achieve this is by collapsing the Lair. This uses the dice pool and mechanics found in p. 100 of Beast: The Primordial, with some exceptions. The Beast's Rank is treated as its Lair rating for the purpose of determining the time between rolls. The Fog Kraken also rolls its Resistance in place of Resolve, and is always conscious of any dangers to the Heart. Every success an attacker scores above the Unfettered's, he deals a point of aggravated damage to its Corpus. If enough successes are gained that the Kraken's Corpus is reduced to zero, it is permanently killed as the Heart begins to collapse.

Bringing iron harpoons into the Heart is even more direct and destructive. The weapon is treated as having +1 to its damage rating, and each success scored in attacks to any part of the Heart is treated as if they struck the Unfettered. Such attacks are not penalized by its Defense. However, if the Kraken still has other Chambers active, it will quickly respond by using their Traits to make the Heart as hostile an environment to intruders as possible.

Which begs the classic question, how does it have a reputation at all?

A good question. Either I'll probably amend that or add a small section that tackles that question. I have been meaning to get some story hooks added for my take on the Kraken.
