    Frog's Kiss: Not all monsters are cursed to be forever alone. Many legends involve such creatures being able to cast off their hideous visages in exchange for being shown an act of compassion or love from humanity. With this Nightmare, the Beast can make themselves appear more charming towards others and convince them to lend aid to the monster. But just like the story of a princess kissing a frog, such compliance may not be socially acceptable in the eyes of others.

    Mechanics aren't planned out, but I'm thinking it would help the Beast during persuasion and seduction attempts.

      The Alien Allure Atavism kind of covers that. That said, an alternative Nightmare could work.

      For effects, perhaps it's something which involves the Charmed and/or Swooning Condition? Also, here's some flavor text to go with that.

        I agree that alien allure Covers that... Unless you can Designate Someone Else As the Object Of infatuation, effectively playing evil Amor. Such passion, especially if you are in a happy relationship atm, and Suddenly developed intense feelings for someone (or someTHING) else would be a nightmarish experience. Bonus points if it's a mix of disgust and love- in the original fairy tale, the Princess threw the froh against a wall rather than Kiss him.

        • Ooh ooh! What about an Acanthus Kinship Nightmare that makes the victim think they're trapped in a loop? Doomed to repeat the same sequence of events until they surrender completely to their fate.

            • Another idea for an Acanthus, Arisen or possibly Changeling Kinship: It Is Written. Causes the victim to believe that something is fated/certain to come to pass, and thus does nothing to resist it. The Nightmare creates a self-fulfilling prophecy, so to speak.

              I guess that might be better handled as a reskinning of You Must Obey, though. Meh. Whatever.


              Is it presumptuous of me to ask for alternating male/female pronouns?

                I disagree that it's just a reskinning of You must Obey.
                The fear of something going to happen and being unable to do anything against it, perhaps even ending up helping it along?
                Something like this maybe:

                It is Written (Arisen/Changeling/Acanthus Kinship)
                There is nothing you can do: it will happen. It has to. It is destiny.
                Roll: Intelligence + Satiety vs. Composure + Supernatural Tolerance
                Effect: The Beast decides on a certain development: you will break up with your girlfriend, your wife will find out about your affair, you will get fired, you will get the promotion you don't want to get because it would mean you will have to move to the other side of the continent.... For the next 24 hours, the victim is unable to stop it: the victim gains the Delusional Condition, and cannot spend Willpower. Rolls to go against his 'fate' do not have the 10-again quality, rolls to give in and pursue his fate gain the 9-again quality.
                High Satiety effect: Bit by bit, the victim gives in: in addition to the normal effect, any failed roll is treated as a dramatic failure AND the victim loses a point of willpower for the enourmous effort it takes to go against fate should he roll a success.
                Satiety Expenditure: Despite his wishes, the victim appears like he is really intent on achieving the development: he gains a penalty to acting against his fate that is equal to the Beast's Lair. Should he give in and try to fulfill his fate, this will become a bonus. In addition, any roll that is not an exceptional success is treated as a failed roll, as his denying wanting the promotion is seen as humbleness, and his denying of having an affair comes across as a really lame lie.
                Exceptional Success: Rolls that give in to his fate enjoy the 8-again quality, and the effect lasts 48 hours instead of 24.


                This nighmare can be stopped early by resolving the Delusional Condition.

                  I like the way that this Nightmare could be used both to help an ally, or against an enemy. Wouldn't be nice for either of them, but a 'glorious fate' would be an interesting one.

                  • Thanks. Needs some balancing though - the stacking of the high satiety effect and the satiety expenditure would be overpowered. Maybe instead of making any non-exceptional succes a failure, it should detract 2 Successes.

                        You don't matter:
                        Intelligence + Satiety vs. Resolve + Supernatural Resistance
                        Nothing you do has meaning. Why even try? Why not just stop struggling at all? Just lay down and wait for death...
                        Normal: The victim gains the Lethargic condition, and loses access to his specialties as well as the 10-again quality. Those would mean that they are somehow special and can contribute, after all.
                        High Satiety: You have no impact. When participating in a team effort, expectional successes yield one success. Normal successes are treated as failures. In addition, the target cannot fall asleep for the duration of the Nightmare.
                        Satiety Expenditure: The victim's Resolve is considered to be 1 for the duration of the Nightmare. In addition, since the victim is preoccupied with pondering the meaninglessness of their efforts, Wits-related rolls are penalized by the Beast's Lair.
                        Exceptional Success: The Nightmare lasts 24 hours

                        • You Are Wrong: A Nightmare that makes it impossible to relay a fact/prove something to others. Testimony is dismissed out of hand. Evidence goes missing in a hundred silly little ways or else becomes obviously false. Eventually, even you come to doubt whether or not you just made a mistake.

                            You Are Filler (Hero Kinship)
                            Did you think you were the hero of this story? You're not. You're not even the villain. You're just the spear-carrier, the mook, the faceless extra in the background. Now shut up and let the stars play their roles. There is no room in this tale for a nobody like you.

                            Roll- Intelligence + Satiety vs Resolve + Supernatural Resistance

                            Normal Effect- the victim understands that they are not the main character in the story of their life, and they act according. For as long as this nightmare affects them, they must make a reflexive Resolve+Presence roll (and beat the beast's successes) to do anything that would draw significant attention to them (attack someone, make a speech, destroy something, etc)

                            High Satiety- The victim knows their role is to respond, not to act. They need to make the reflexive roll to initiate things that draw even minor attention to themselves. Starting a conversation. crying for help, pointing out the intruder- all of these are for the major players, not them.

                            Satiety Expenditure - The mook's role has always been to die for the hero. Record the number of successes that the Beast rolls. For as long as the nightmare continues, if the beast is damaged they can trade the a success to transfer a point of damage to someone affected by the nightmare. By distortions in perception, the attack hits the extra instead. They cannot use any defenses, mundane or magical, against this- however, if they survive, they are instantly freed from the nightmare.

                            Exceptional Success - The reflexive roll has a -2 penalty.



                            You Are Just An Animal (Insatiable Kinship)
                            Look at you hairless monkeys. You think you are the rulers of this world, the pinnacle of evolution. But the sea and the sky, the earth and flame and void, they know the truth. There were "pinnacles of evolution" before you, and there will be after you. For all your arrogance, ape, you're nothing more then another species of prey.

                            Roll- Intelligence+ Satiety vs Composure + Supernatural Resistance

                            Normal Effect- The Illusion that is civilisation fades away from the victim, as they start slipping back into the primitive thought patterns of the first hominids (or at least, what we think the first hominids were like). Any actions that would require concepts more complex then a smart animal could grasp take a -2 penalty*

                            High Satiety- Humanity relies so much on their machines. Yet another sign of their hubris. For as long as the nightmare lasts, any machine created less then (10 x number of success) years ago simply doesn't work for the victim. No matter how hard they try, it simply doesn't respond to their instructions.

                            Satiety Expenditure - Humans were once just another beast in the field. They will be again. A single human victim immediately reverts down to the state of a wild animal. Their intelligence drops down to 0, and they are incapable of using language or performing any action penalised by the normal effect.
                            In addition, the beast can give the victim one instinct that they will attempt to act out to the best of their ability. This can be any behaviour seen in the animal kingdom. It doesn't necessarily have to be an animal related to humanity, but it does have to be an instinct the victim could biologically fulfil.
                            This power lasts for the rest of the scene- once it is reversed, the victim only has vague and fragmented memories of what happened. Unless they see evidence, the memories quickly fade.

                            Exceptional Success- The victim also loses 10-again on penalised roles.

                            *(Note that animals aren't stupid- dolphins can grasp basic maths, apes can comprehend melee weapons and virtually all social animals can manipulate or deceive. This penalty applies mostly to actions like complex technology, academia, politics, crafting and otherwise clearly "human" actions)


                            Also, a helpful nightmare!

                            You Are Feared (Common)
                            Look at you. Beaten down, cowering, fleeing from monsters on all sides. Don't you wish you knew what it was like to be the powerful one, to be the terrible thing that the weak quiver and weep at the sight of?
                            Here. Let it never be said monsters cannot be kind.


                            Roll- As base nightmare (see below)

                            Normal Effect- The beast uses another nightmare on the target, with a -2 penalty. If it succeeds, the "victim" gains the ability to use that nightmare for the rest of the scene.The victim can only use the normal effect, and must pay either a willpower point or 2 supernatural fuel points to use the nightmare. Beyond their store of these resources, there is no limit to how often they can use it. The manifestation of the nightmare remain the same as the original beast's, but the beast has no control over how the victim uses their new power, and cannot remove it prematurely.
                            This nightmare cannot be used on another beast

                            High Satiety- The victim uses the nightmare as if at high satiety (this effect remains even if the beast drops in satiety before the nightmare runs out)

                            Satiety Expenditure- The victim can spend double (i.e. two willpower or 4 supernatural fuel points) to use the nightmare's satiety expenditure effect.

                            Exceptional Success- The beast is immune to the victim's nightmare, and can make a contested resolve+supernatural resistance to preemptively remove the power if they wish.

                            • No comment on the mechanics right now, but I think the ideas behind both of those nightmares are AWESOME!
