An now a suggestion for this thread, with a small apology to anyone who was working on Janus:

      Alebrije

Marching through the Primordial realm is a strange procession of creatures unlike any you've ever seen. Some have wings, some have feet, some have arms, and some have no limbs at all. The only thing this absurd menagerie all have in common is that their bright, garish coloring and a single word they all cry out, "Alebrije!"

Perhaps one of the strangest denizens of the Dark Mother's realm, some Primordial scholars believe that the Alebrije are not in fact, creatures of fear, but rather monsters born of fever dreams and madness. Such seems to be the only real explanation of these maddening creatures. Alebrije endlessly wander the Primordial Dream, never seeming to tire or rest in their endless parade. However, attracting the attention of these absurd looking animals is dangerous, as they quickly charge anything that has the misfortune of catching their eyes. For whatever reason, the Alebrije are attracted to areas were madness reigns; a high concentration of them can be seen as a portent of a particularly maddening monster's presence: Insatiable's Schisms, Promethean Wastelands, a Mad's experiments, or a spirit of Insanity manifesting; any of these could draw a vast number of Alebrije to a single location, which is why particularly savvy Begotten pay close attention to the presence of Alebrije in the Hive...

      What do you guys think?

Well, feel free to take the initiative if desired - I don’t get ample time for homebrew these days, anyways.

What I was thinking is calling them Masquers. They awaken by overcoming extreme stress with excess psychic power, representing by exceptional success on a breaking point. Experiencing the Primordial Dream without becoming any of its other creations is guaranteed to qualify for ‘extreme stress.’ They’d have access to their Masque (Persona), which gives them the ability to impose Lair Traits (Skills!). I’d reckon they need something to incentivize gaining of Social Merits that represent relationships with other people (Social Links/ Confidants). Maybe something from Touchstone mechanics?

Admitted, I'm not too wise on mechanics, though it does sound interesting, and there definitely should be a means to leverage Social Merits into power...

A template feature that gives a Beat for every dot purchased in a Social Merit, and another that give Beats for interacting with Touchstone equivalents?

To make this more relevant to Beast, maybe we should merge Persona Users and Palace Rulers into one concept. But we already have Dark Lords here, courtesy of Leliel, so that might not be a good idea.

              Two inspirational ideas:
              • Primordial Dream-based predators that hunt Horrors. Not Insatiables (who steal Chambers) but actual critters (animal intelligence or not) that hunt the Horror itself.
              • [cross posted] Dungeons - super-Chambers in the Primordial Dream with "depth". The Beast needs to enter at the shallowest layer and clear the depths to claim it (with some extra bonus). Like a Lair on its own, without a Horror (though it might be populated by other fearsome inhabitants). Beast-specific dungeon-crawls!

Yossarian: "And lo, it was optimal."

That's an awesome idea Vent0! So are the dungeons something you earn and become part of your legend? Like once you beat it, it's now part of your lair, and it keeps the creatures you have slain to opt as obstacles for a hero foolish enough to enter the dungeon. Finally are the predators supposed to represent antithesis to specific horrors, or are they just beings that try to take the horrors hunger, starving him

Could be? These are the outlines of ideas, for others to build on. I don't have anything concrete in mind yet.

New idea (which may need to be split off into a different thread, as it isn't strictly Primordial Dream focused): A Beast minor template that represents the semi-monstrous offspring of a Beast - tentative name Caliban. Unlike Horror-spawn, they are the issue if the human side if the Beast, not their Horror. Probably they inherit an Atavism, and maybe some other Traits. Will develop more later.

                    • If they're the human side, perhaps they get a nightmare or two?

Could, but I was already working on Humans-with-Nightmares as the Formidolosii. Also, this was specifically for a Humans-with-Atavisms concept, hence the tentative name choice of Caliban (described as "half human, half monster"), for a more visceral feel. I'm thinking they get an Atavism (option to buy more?), get a Hunger, and retain Virtue, Vice, and Integrity. Their Integrity is treated as Satiety for the Atavism's purposes - possibly with more material expression of what the Atavism is at Low Satiety/Integrity, for visible monstrousness. Let them spend Integrity in place of Satiety? But feeding via the Hunger lets them recoup it?

If their ancestor's Horror gets Unfettered, they stand a good chance of inheriting it for their own Devouring.

I was thinking about doing Persona Users as creating/summoning/invoking Goetia reflected in the Sympathetic links between the user and others. The strength of the link (Withstand-Connection) determines the Rank of the Goetia.

For the Wild Cards, yes. But what about the ‘normal’ Users?

With regards to the Beast sub-splat thread, I suppose Persona Users/ Palace Rulers can be the Lair Trait specialists, compared to the Atavism/Nightmare specialists.

As far as discrete sub-splats for Beasts, I can see:
                              • Atavisms
                              • Nightmares (+Kinship?)
                              • Lair (Chambers, Traits) (+Primordial Pathways and Skeleton Key?)
Atavisms I'm pursuing with Caliban. Nightmares seem ideal for a more Lore-based Sorcery-like setup, seeing as they are already learned, and leverage a tie to the mortal realm. For Lair stuff, one would have to bond with and control a Chamber - possibly one they themselves created.

But that's just my take on things.
