  • Chinese Huntsmen?

hi there! I there anyone in here who knows enough about Chinese mythology and folklore to suggest a mythical creature/god/demon/being/you name it which could work as an Huntsman of some kind? I've made a quick search in Wikipedia and google, but haven't found anything which felt "right", as there is nothing I can find which is similar enough for a "Wild Hunt" kind of thing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A good start would be the various yaoguai/yaogui/yaojing that bedevil the pilgrims in Journey to the West. IIRC Huntsmen are presented as uplifted elementals of some kind, which kinda suits the yaoguai as corrupted spirits of the natural world. Things from Buddhist folklore, and Hindu stuff that passed into the Buddhist worldview, are good. Rakshasas and hungry ghosts have a sense of "manifestation of a larger evil force that preys on good people." The hungry ghosts aren't the root of the problem, but the system that created them.

White Bone Spirit would be a good Huntsman, her thing in Journey to the West was all about making Sun Wukong's allies distrust him and think he was evil, separating him from his support network.

e: Japanese not Chinese, but Kubo and the Two Strings has a pair of sisters who would work great as Huntsmen sent by a celestial True Fae, or as angels of the G-M for that matter. If I were running a Changeling game in a Chinese cultural milieu, I'd use wicked and merciless functionaries of the Celestial Bureaucracy with auspicious titles as Huntsmen.

e2: this isn't really Huntsman material, but wuxia fiction would be great inspiration for Courts and Freeholds in such a game. Jin Yong's novel "The Smiling Proud Wanderer" is basically the story of someone who gets fucked over by the conflict between nominally "good guy" and "bad guy" Courts. Imagine a Freehold in mainland China that got destroyed by purely mortal intervention in the Cultural Revolution, and those left behind create a new and completely fictional set of "traditions" in the 70s derived from the pop culture image of rival schools and sects of the jianghu.

I am not incredibly up to date with my Changeling 2e information, but I do know a bit about Chinese mythology. The more major Gods hanging around in China are a bit tricky for Huntsmen, a bit cosmologically 'large', but there are some amazing Keepers in there. I would really like to echo Caladriu's suggestion of tapping into the idea of the lower level bureaucratic entities of the Celestial Bureaucracy. Chinese Mythology is a bit... well, no, it is incredibly complicated after various periods compounding religious traditions, various ethnic groups, and foreign traditions incorporated into the larger system. But, an idea that shows up is the Celestial Bureaucracy, where you get various Deities slated into a massive number of ministries which oversee various functions of reality. So, for example, The Ministry of Wealth and Luck has two Departments. Civil, which has Bi Gan as the Minister, and the Martial which has Zhao Gongming as Minister.

So, you could look through various governmental positions within the Imperial Chinese bureaucratic system(s) and whip up a really arcane and fanciful title to base a Huntsman on. So, you could have something like Senior Supervising Secretary of the Ministry of Celestial Portents and Terrestrial Internment. There is a really great collection of Ming Dynasty terms and titles that you can find here if you want to get some more inspiration.

Edit: I didn't actually check if that article has free access. If it's too much of a trouble to get your hands on and you're interested, just let me know and I can go through and collect some of the more interesting titles and their translations for you.

The concept of Hell is also a fun place to mine ideas from. Chinese mythology has both Taoist and Buddhist influences - add the two together, and you basically get a public prison where the prisoners are the damned and the jailors are the demons, called the yaksha. They're originally from Hindu mythology, and are nature spirits who are usually benevolent to humanity but sometimes get violent. In Asia they're described as demons, though, especially the aforementioned Hell-demons.

You could have a Gentry whose theme is being the warden of such a Hellish prison, with the changelings being the escaped prisoners. Huntsmen would be the jailor yaksha - heck, with yaksha orignally being nature spirits, this also lines with Huntsment being 'spirits' of a sort in Arcadia. Hmm... in this direction, you could do a pseudo-crossover with Kindred of the East from WoD.

These guys seemed suitable as deities of fortune and as escort for the dead into the Chinese underworld and/or Hell.
