  • Changeling in other languages

    Let's get homebrew translations going.

I think I'm not the only one who has run Changeling in a language other than English (in my case Swedish) and I thought that maybe I'm not the only one who has translated the specific words of the game, the lexicon, or at least some of it, to that language. I searched for a place where maybe that was already covered, but I found none, so I made a topic for it here. Feel free to use these, and submit your own versions. I'll update this original post with any contributions in any language.

    Notes!
I contract the submissions to words, conjugations and really relevant stuff to keep down word count and stuff.

I'll turn it around in order so if anyone is looking for what Fae (or whichever word) is in Arabic, they'll be able to search for it alphabetically.

Since most fairy tales find their origin in Germanic folklore (or at least got popularized in Germany by the brothers Grimm), I'll throw in the translations to German, in case anyone is interested:

        Arcadia - Arcadia

Changeling - Wechselbalg (which literally means 'switched baby')

        Court - Gericht

Fae, True Fae, Fairies - Fee, Wahre Feen, Elfen

Fetch - Geholt ('Geholt' is the literal German word for 'fetch', but this is not an accurate translation. The accurate translation for 'fetch' would be 'Wechselbalg', the same word used for changeling, because what we call a fetch in CtL is the changeling in Germanic folklore.)

        Freehold - Freier Halt

Gateway - Tor (gate), Durchgang (gateway) or Zugang (entrance)

Goblin, Hobgoblin - Kobold (yes, I know on most modern western fantasies Kobold are different creatures, but originally "goblin" was the English translation of the German word "Kobold".)

Hedge - Hecke, Einfassung ('die Hecke' is an accurate translation, but I personally feel that 'die Einfassung' is a more elegant translation, it captures what 'the Hedge' is better.)

        Hedgespinning - Heckenspinnen

        Hollow - Hohl

        Keeper - Betreuer

        Mask - Maske

        Mien - Miene

        Trod - Getreten

Disclaimer: I'm not German myself, I'm Dutch, but I have studied German and it's the 3rd best language I speak, read and write. If any actual German person reads this and has any issue with my translations, feel free to correct them.

This is true for Swedish as well, but I'm thinking that the human and the fae lingo differs. Humans just have no separate words for the two, because from their perspective, they're indistinguishable.

It can be hard to find perfect fits in French so I tend to take a bit of creative license on occasions for some of those terms to sound more appealing. Would love some recommendation from any French speaker out here

Arcadia - Arcadia (personal preference although Arcadie is the French name of the Greek region)
              Beast - Bestial
Bedlam - Tumulte (From the old official C:tD French translation, had to change that Crown 'Tumult' contract to 'Tourmente' [Torment])
Bridge Burners - Coupeurs de ponts
              Changeling - Changelin
              Clarity - Clarté
              Cold Iron - Fer Froid
              Darkling - Sombre
              Durance - Captivité
              Elemental - Élémentaire
Entitlement - Attitrement (That one was super hard to find, I'm a little afraid it might sound a bit like a silly made up word but it does appear in an 1845 dictionary. For first ed I just went with "noble order" [ordre noble] but that won't cut it anymore)
Fae - Fae (Medieval French but it sounds way more relevant to C:tL than the current form "fée" which has a bit of a Tinker Bell connotation)
              Fairest - Sublime
Fetch - Simulacre (If you have to translate it but I just keep the same term in my games, it just works better)
              Freehold - Fief
Gentry - Aristocrates or Aristocrates Arcadiens (Imperfect but I think it works)
Glamour - Glamour (Unfortunately in French the term only has the modern connotation so some might prefer to translate it with something such as Féerie)
              Goblin Contract/Fruit/Market - Contrat/Fruit/Marché Gobelin
              Hedge - La Haie
Hedgespinning - Tisser la Haie (Imperfect)
Hedgespun - Tissé dans la Haie or just Tissé (spun) to make it less clunky (Very imperfect)
              Hobgoblin - Gobelin
Hollow - Refuge if small or Domaine if bigger (Never was able to nail that one)
Keeper - Maître (To make it sound more like "keeper of a pet")
Kenning : Acuité (From the old official C:tD French translation)
Kith - Kith (Never managed to translate it and it's been a problem as the French pronunciation makes it sound either as "kit", "kiss" or "kiffe" [slang for liking something])
              Lost - Égaré
              Loyalist - Loyaliste
              Mantle - Manteau
              Mask - Masque
              Mien - Apparence féerique
              Motley - Cercle (Imperfect)
              Oath - Serment
              Ogres - Ogres
Touchstone - Pillier ("Pillar", as the litteral "pierre de touche" just doesn't work in French)
              Pledge - Promesse
Portaling - L'Évasion (Very imperfect but everything else I came up with sounded silly)
              Privateer - Esclavagiste
              Seeming - Aspect
              Thorns - Les épines
Token - Artefact (Never managed to coin that one either so I just fall back to plain old artifact)
Trod - Sentier (From the old official C:tD French translation)
True Fae - Vraie Fae or Vraie Fée
              Wizened - Flétri
Wyrd - Estrange (Medieval form of "étrange" which means strange. Sticking to the more modern "weird" connotation rather than "fate" although I'll sometimes throw in "Estrange Destinée" to salvage the concept as much as possible)

I also always refer these wonderful 1e kith translations which come almost entirely from user Monsieur Chat on a French message board from a decade back, they're a great help to this day.
