    01000111 01101111 01100100 Plot Hooks

Demon: the Descent has been out for long enough now, so I figured people would have some nifty ideas for plots and stories including Demons and their interaction with the God-Machine.

    So, let's hear 'em

    211) The Demon/Ring is approached directly by Angels. They aren't here to fight or bring them back, but instead have an offer - Help the God-Machine completely some Infrastructure in a place Angels have difficulty operating (such as the Hedge) and they will be greatly rewarded.

    212) Demons have learned of a dire plot - a contagion will soon be unleashed that will slowly kill off humanity. But, and this is perhaps more troublesome, Demon-blooded - even Latents - are immune to it. The God-Machine wants to ensure only the offspring of its former agents eventually remain of humanity. Why, and how can It's designs be stopped?

"Darn Right it is full of potholes! Do you have any idea what the Creator could do with that much energy? Or what it would have been funnelling it towards? Just do the job and dig up the road at the designated spots on the map, unless you want the Agency to cut you off!"

Like a city scale glyph these routes of travel are beginning to have essence and aether flow along their routes but it's still warming up. There is still time to act before the output is produced. And so, the local unchained are scrambling to respond before it is too late.

Final Destination? That was kind of genius.

    207) Unintended Chaosquences: Various pieces of infrastructure, all connected by a God-Machine cover company based around storing and transporting goods, have recently started to rapidly, and randomly, oscillate between extreme levels of efficiency and being almost completely shut down. No one in the local demon community knows the cause, and rumours of the Machine’s own agitation over the issue are also spreading. It falls to the PCs to go in and investigate the cause, and whether it could become a threat to the Unchained. Or perhaps even an asset?

Twist #1: An autist who recently joined the company in an administrative function is the cause of all the ruckus, born of their various genuine attempts to streamline the company’s ability to respond to what they see as the rather strange orders of some eccentric client/customer or another with suitable speed and efficiency, to varying degrees of success and failure. They also, at least outwardly, seem to genuinely believe that the company is a mortal, if odd, organisation.

Twist #2: The autist has managed to piece together just enough to realise that something weird is going on, and is investigating out of a desire to ensure the company’s ongoing safety and profitability. Can’t have people skimming money off of the tops of contracts or anything like that!

    208) The Aetheric Shrine: Rumours are abound of a strange piece of Infrastructure built in a fashion evocative of a shrine or temple. What makes it so strange is that it seems to have no purpose beyond harvesting the local essence, converting it into Aether and subsequently storing the generated tech-gnostic energy. No-one knows what to make of it, but a mixed team/ring of Inquisitors and Saboteurs has been sent to investigate it as either a possible trap, or a valuable resource to be subverted against the God-Machine.

Well, there is some Bioshock in there. It was just that I kinda wrote it down first, then thought "Hey, I accidentally did a Bioshock", and kinda went back to edit things to fit that reference a little better.

206 - Our Lady of Rapture
We have spent a lot of time and effort tracking weather, building ships bigger and stronger and mapping the ocean, yet ships still go missing. They founder in storms, run off-course, suffer catastrophic breakdowns. And sometimes, those who make it out of such a disaster spy, far-off, a tall, dark tower with a light at the tip. Lifeboats row towards it, hoping for rescue, but when they reach the strange lighthouse they find it empty, and stairs only leading down into the craggy rock on which it stands. A strange, siren song, modulated precisely to stimulate curiosity and suppress fear, draws them downwards into the depths of this strange Facility. Space bends, and before long beyond the portholes the stranded men see spires belching black smoke into the water - somewhere between chimneys and volcanic vents. Strange creatures swim outside, lit by the red fires and the stark lighting of the Facility. Finally, they are met by the inhabitants of this domain, the machine-angels who will be the caretakers of their transformation, and by then it is too late. They will be tranquilized and modified, electrodes inserted carefully into the skull to stimulate activity and counteract the effects of soul-loss, while those extracted souls will be put to use as components in the the more esoteric products of this deep-sea factory.

At the heart of all this sits the archangel her brain-numbed minions call the Principality of the Abyss, the Cold Ocean Womb, or Our Lady of Rapture. She - insofar as she has gender - presides over all the workings of this Facility, and acts as a holy medium between the God-Machine and Its undersea operations. Her children manipulate the courses of sea-storms and hurricanes, and mine resources from the sea-bed to build the Machine's great projects. She is privy to secrets of the Machine shared by few others, and her power is enormous. If she could be destroyed, or made to Fall, though, what a Hell her Facility would make.

    205 - The Nail
It's common knowledge that the obelisk downtown, carted in from Egypt back in the 1910s, is Infrastructure. It's got that aura of Aether, and it's got an urban mythos around its 'curse' that the Unchained have long since linked back to a guardian angel assigned to it. No new sightings or instances of 'the curse' have been reported in almost a year now, though, and all signs point to the disappearance of the angel. Fallen, maybe, recalled or something else. Whatever the case, the Infrastructure seems to be open to suborning.

That's the rub, though. Obviously, it could be some kind of trap, but if that was the Infrastructure's only purpose that's a hell of a wait for a payoff. And there's news reports from around the time of the obelisk's installation of disturbances, disappearances and even sightings of some kind of monster in the area. There's been no disappearances or sightings yet, but the city has suffered multiple low-level earthquakes over the last year. The only real way to know, would be to descend into the sewers and other tunnels beneath the streets, and find out what it is, exactly, that the Nail was meant to pin in place.

    204 - The Infant Motor
Have you ever heard of John Murray Spear? He was a clergyman, an abolitionist and a spiritualist, back in the 1850s. He claimed to claimed to be in contact with a group of spirits he called the 'Association of Electrizers'. Under the direction of these spirits (mostly various dead scientific personalities, including but not limited to Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson) he and a number of followers went to a town in Massachusetts to start building what they called alternately 'the New Messiah', 'the New Motive Power' and 'the Infant Motor'; a mechanical Second Coming meant to usher in a utopian era. They built the thing over nine months, then had a 'New Mary' (we don't know who this woman was) ritualistically 'birth' a spirit for the contraption they'd put together.

It's obviously a God-Machine plot; the Association of Electrizers were clearly angels or an angel, and the Infant Motor just reeks of Infrastructure. After it was 'born', though, all it seemed to do was occasionally move some of the spheres it was composed of - plenty of disappointed witnesses attested to such - and eventually it was destroyed by a Baptist mob who thought it was heresy, after it was moved to New York. Or so Spear claimed.

    204.a: All Grown Up
Spear lied. The New Motive Power was never destroyed; it was just moved to some secret location, and it remains an important piece of Command and Control infrastructure to this day. Its exact location is hidden, and undoubtedly it's guarded by angels and stranger things besides - but perhaps its location can be traced from Spear's later writings. Something like that's got to be important - and at the very least, keeping tabs on C&C Infrastructure is never a bad thing.

    204.a.1: In the Beginning
The Infant Motor is far more than merely C&C Infrastructure. It was the infant form of the God-Machine itself, born under the hands of spiritualists, and saved by its nascent designs. Any signs of its activity prior to this point are either trickery and Concealment Infrastructure at work to obscure the timeline of its vulnerable, embryonic stage, or the result of the Machine propagating itself through time. If there were some way to return to this point in time, however, there is nothing that could not be accomplished - or risked. Who can say what enslaving, kidnapping, destroying or altering the infant God-Machine would result in. Perhaps deliverance. Perhaps annihilation.

    204.b: Scapegoat
The New Messiah's purpose has long since been fulfilled. It was never meant as anything more than a sacrifice; an effigy of the God-Machine, built to attract attention and to be destroyed, the news of this destruction supernaturally magnified and embedded into the human psyche, inuring mortal minds to the idea that a God-Machine remains. If its plans could be uncovered, and the Infant Motor rebuilt, though, perhaps that might undo its effects, revealing sections of the Machine's workings. Whether this is a good idea is a debate in itself, but its implications could be anything from a new crop of Stigmatics to a backlash against the Machine great enough to make a real change.

204.c: There Will Come a Child
The Infant Motor wasn't a creation of the God-Machine at all. Rather, it was the first, faltering attempt of a Ring, Murray's 'Association of Electrizers' at creating their own Infrastructure, using a mortal puppet to create an extra layer of deniability. Their machine failed, or was sabotaged, or destroyed - but perhaps if you could track down their designs (or maybe even the Electrizers themselves, if any still survive) the project could be attempted again. Perhaps the Unchained can make their own savior.
