More classical Demons and Angels setting hack

This is my second take on making Demon: the Descent more game about monotheistic angels and demons and less about technospies hiding before the enemy. Those elements are all still there, but more classical feel of angelo- and demonology is add with this hack to the game. I’s loosely based on my first attempt, so if you like, you can read previous take based on Supernatural TV series. Notice: This hack use realms of Empyrean and Inferno in World of Darkness as backstory - for more information on those you can read in Inferno, Imperial Mysteries or Promethean: the Created.

    1. Covers aren’t new human beings created for God Machine angels. Instead, they are living mortals that Infrastructure make G-M angel posses. When they Fall, they take possessed human with them. Switching between Covers is in reality switching between humans you possessed. Burned Cover is mortal who is freed from angles or demons possession, becoming Stigmatic and probably having flashbacks of his action under angel or demon control.

( From now on is mythic history, that no character in WoD knows for certainty. It shows just the way things now operates in cohesive narrative )

2.There are two ancient, god forces in this version of World of Darkness - the Creator ( i.e. Monotheistic God ) and Demiurge. God Machine is not the Demiurge or Creator!

    3. Both Creator and Demiurge made the world. They created Heaven ( Empyrean ), Earth ( World of Darkness ) and Hell ( various Lower Depths realms, especially Inferno ). God wanted it to be as his image of it. He made part of him to break out from him and work to this idea - the Principle - as well lesser beings that were to become his servants and messengers. We call them angels and they response directly to the will of the Principle that want's the world as it was envisioned by Creator.

    4. Other force - the Demiurge - wanted to steal the world from God. Knowing he can’t defeat Creator, he tainted his angels, tempt them to rebellion. The angles started it and those that were revolting, were send with Demiurge to the Lower Depths, were they soaked with imperfection of those realms. First fallen Archangels become spirits of weakness they shown in mutiny and transformed in to Demon Princes of Inferno, commonly known as Hell. Demiurge became the dark mirror of Creator, always wanting to twist his creations.

    5. Aeons later Creator made a humans. Angels, by the Principle, were sent to watch and care for young race. But as angels were multidimensional beings, they needed to find a way to walk with humanity. God Machine were created by the God so it could preper Infrastructure for new angels to materialize, both in they true form, and Covers made from living humans dedicated to Creator. And it was good.

    6. But later something happened - maybe Adam and Eve were tainted by Tree of the Knowledge, maybe Awakened humans created Abyss - and conduit to Demiurge were open. He twisted God Machine in to abandon his work as Gatekeeper for angels of Principle, and made him in to sustaining the Lie.

    7. Creator has been lost since those time - it is said that he made embittered on his creations and left. Or that he looks for the way to defeat Demiurge once and for all. Whatever the truth is, Principle don’t know were the Creator is and can’t contact with it. Empyrean Angels are largely locked in Heaven without the help of God Machine to materialize. They can come down in to Earth only on very specific occasions ( Infrastructure events, in reality ).

    8. God Machine, unconsciously, works for the Demiurge by abiding the Lie in to strictness sense. It creates “angels” - that are really only intelligent shells for true Angels to interact with material reality- and send them to fulfill it’s new “mission”. Those that fall, they become self-aware and free willed. Some of Unchained join Principle in it’s search for God. Some join Fallen from Inferno, and want to be on top of new status quo. Most is unaware of true history and just fight with God Machine that want’s them all back. They never knew literal Heaven and Hell desire them as they agents.

For this setting hack I made two new Agendas - one for Unchained who join the cause of Fallen Masters from Inferno. And second for those who join Principle in it’s search for Creator and maintaining the World of Darkness in it’s original form.

I hope it’s cool addition to the Demon: the Descent setting. Any comments are welcome.

There seems to be a certain implication within the text that Covers from God are effectively metaphysical surgical transplants that get their connections from the Machine's many harvesting mechanisms, I'd like to note.

Other idea to think about: If we are using Infrastructure as choosing people to be possessed as Covers for the Angles and Unchained, not making fake lives - what happen when Unchained lose all his Cover? He run only in Demonic Form, and God Machine is all the time sending Angels after him? Or maybe become like black smoke, in Supernatural?

Well, going by your cosmology, the first of the Dukes of Hell were corrupted Angels, and the God-Machine's hollow, soulless angels should be easier to corrupt. I don't know what would happen, I'd gather they'd Fall like an Unchained though.

Question on this cosmology: If Inferno can corrupt spirits, ghost and astral beings, should it be able to corrupt ephemeral God-Machine's angels before their Fall? Those angels are also ephemeral beings.

I know they probably looks as only Virtue conterparts to Fallen, but here are Exalted. If you think you can make them way cooler - just write.

    Exalted
    Where is God?

Demons were angels. In reality, they still can be. Word “angel” means massager, and once God Machine creations are surely herald of his will, even if they aren’t from literal Incarnations. They make his volition in to reality. And all of them need purpose.

After the Fall from God Machine, often lonely and scared, newly Unchained look for their new mission. Most develop or join normal Agendas. But there are those that look for something greater. And they get the sign from the God itself.

To those fresh demons comes Principle, God or state of universe, it’s force that by Old Testament image of pillars made from fire or burning bushes say’s it needs the Unchained and it has the Plan. It says about world in it’s more pure, more virtues state. And that it need’s demon to become angel once more and fill it’s Will.

Many turn away, blazed with imaginary or madness of those visions. Other feel they identity, they individuality is too important. But many crave this unity with things bigger than themselves. They were created by false God that is Machine. But now they become one with thing that is closes to real God. And it’s ask to them to help it make world better with they Virtues. Or to find the real Creator of all that is. All for promise to join Heavenly Hosts after their demonic bodies death.

The Descent: Exalted want to return to true state of reality. They want to change World of Darkness in to World of Truth. And to do this, they need to reconcile Virtues in people. But in this world, Virtue is not the same thing as Good. Justice is not Forgiveness. Prudence is not Mercy.

The Principle wants to fulfill her will, but here orders are often very hard and demanding from Exalted. Like Isaac was told to sacrifice his son, Unchained following this path will made very taught decisions. He will spread influence of his guidance Virtue, even if the whole world will tell him not too. And maybe, someday, he will join Principle and find true God.

In the meantime he needs to follow orders and convert as much Unchained as possible be. Of course, in this situation God Machine is enemy of Heavenly Host, but Exalted are not unanimous is it should destroyed, or maybe converted to work for Principle. To them others Unchained Hell is to finally return to Heaven.

Organization: Exalted join in loose cults dedicated to one of Patrons. They idealise Seven Heavenly Virtues, working to sustain it in the world, and by it, empowering Principle and they Descent for Heaven. From time to time they make loose alliances between cults, especially, as they local mission dictates help from in name of many virtues.

Archangels Patrons of Exalted in Empyrean:But outside they misions, they are totally free. Most join rest of Unchained in they rings, becoming priest- or advisor-like figures, encouraging cohesion and common purpose of demons. Of course, they orders are most important, so they lie to they comrades, but helping them in the way most of the time. All they do is for making Earth as it should be.

Many Exalted are ex-Integrators, now converted that God Machine is false god, and they need to work for higher calling. They understand they work can be very difficult, but they firmly believe, they will join real angels when it’s done.

    Fallen
Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heavan

Demons are sinners. They sinned against God-Machine as angels, and were cast away in return. They sin to protect they Covers, or sin against them. And they sin like any other human, even if they aren’t ones. Truly, to be a demon, is to be slave to the sin. Fallen are it’s masters.

In World of Darkness, sin is power. People feel better if they do “bad things” in name of they Vice. Monsters of the night rave in they darker side, gaining strength in return. Fallen are demons that after rebelion against God-Machine were confronted with existence as creature of Vice. After the Fall, they could empower by serving it. Also, sinning is so sweet.

And then they find there is literal Hell. Not metaphorical dimension of freedom most demons looking for. But real, Old Testament type Hell. Many call it Inferno. But to Fallen it’s called home. Or at least they want to. For now, it’s place were they Demon Prince patrons live.

Those ancient beings, old as humanity itself, are very interested in once angels, now demons. They send they lesser servants, spirits, ghosts and other things transformed by the sins they serve. And those massangers are preaching to Unchained so they coud join in Inferno. Some of them do. And so Fall lead to the Fallen.

But of course they don't forget about God-Machine. As false tyrant that once rules they lives, it should be stopped. Or at least every beautiful angel he makes been brought to Inferno's Hosts. And Fallen will make them Fall.

The Descent: Most Unchained wants freedom. They look for Hell in what there aren’t any masters and slaves, only themselves. But without other beings, there isn’t any sociaty, there isn’t hierarchy. Hell is empty and all the devils are here - like they say. But Fallen don’t want to be alone. As once angels, they crave for belonging, orders, purpose. But they can’t return to the God-Machine. They found human side in themselves, individuality, identity. They don’t want to loose those precious gifts of Fall. And so they decide they will reign in literall Hell instead.

Fallen are both masters and slaves. They work for one of the great Patrons, doing “his work”. But always dreaming on the day when they walk in to Inferno, and took the throne for themselves. They will finally be those that send commands, not obeying them.

But for now, they join with rest of Unchained. They forging Vice in to powerful tool of they both inner strength and influence on others, They preach to demons about they own free will, and that they should rule. They tempt angels in to Fall. And of course, they hide outside of eyes of God-Machine, as it hunts the like the rest of the kind. But at least they have purpose in they life. Someday, when they will be powerful enough, they will Descent in to Inferno and be it’s masters. Now will they gather the sins of the world.

Organization: Fallen join in loose cults dedicated to one of Patrons. They idealise Seven Deadly Sins, working to sustain it in the world, and by it, empowering themselves for they Descent. From time to time they make loose alliances between cults, especially, as they local mission dictates help from in name of many sins.

Demon Prince Patrons of Fallen in Inferno:But outside they misions, they are totally free. Most join rest of Unchained in they rings, becoming priest- or advisor-like figures, encouraging individuality and free reign of demons. Of course, they play and scheme they on they're comrades, but helping them in the way none the less.

Many Fallen are ones Integrators, now converted when they see that beside God-Machine they will be only soulless drones at best, destroyed at worst. Confronted with existence of Inferno, they choose they own side. Now have order and missions they lingered, but also work on they own terms. They will join hierarchy, once more, only it is they who would be in charge of it.

    Sterotypes

Inqusitors: Your knowledge don’t lead you to power, if you don’t take actions.
Integrators: Our misguided brothers and sisters, it’s pity you still don’t see your are just slaves.
Saboteures: Still playing this silly wargame with God-Machine? Your choice, but I’m focused on more grander undertacking right now.
Tempters: Hedonism is good, but you still need commitment to achieve something.
    Vampires:
Werewolves: One needless rage is a tool in others great plan.
Mages: You command the “demons”, yet you can’t master your own sins.
    Changlings:
    Human:
