  • Memento Mori Extras

So I don't know if any of the other folks working on Memento Mori ended up over-writing for it, but I totally did, so I figured I would hold on to the main thing we got cut-extra Regalia- so we could have a little gift for my internet home town, and also talk a little bit about my philosophy on Regalia.

So, here are the Regalia that got cut.
    Ducat the Voice
Senator Alexandria Ducat is one of the most vocal opponents to the institutions of power in America today. Proudly calling for societal reform on several layers of society, the Founders Reformational Association have weaved so many of her addresses into their scriptures she became their law-goddess.
    Effect
    • The character can apply a bonus she or an ally gain in the scene to a number of allies equal to half of the Krewe’s Esotery (rounded-up).
    Possible Sources
    • Regalia Ceremony
    Resolution
    • Act in opposition to a Krewe Doctrine, Virtue, or Creed. Gain the Guilty Condition.
    • Change one Aspiration of a number of individuals equal to half the Krewe’s Esotery (rounded up) to one belonging to the character. They gain 8-again on rolls made in pursuit of it.
    • Resolving this Condition grants a Krewe Beat.

    Kala the Night
All things in Samsara shall pass through the hands of Kala, for time knows and takes all things. To Sin-eaters, they seem the personification of the Ocean of Fragments, where in all knowledge can be found but is rendered meaningless, though there are always those who believe that the Dark Night is their greatest ally in guiding all to Nirvana.
    Effect
    • The character gains the Encyclopedic Knowledge Merit, or may instead gain +2 to an existing Encyclopedic Knowledge she already possesses.
    Possible Sources
    • Regalia Ceremony
    Resolution
    • Act in opposition to a Krewe Doctrine, Virtue, or Creed. Gain the Guilty Condition.
    • Everything within yards equal to the effective Rank of the character takes damage to their Structure equal to half of the Krewe’s Esotery.
    • Resolving this Condition grants a Krewe Beat.

    Dandolo the Serene
If funding a Crusade so that the rival city of Constantinople is sacked for your benefit doesn’t qualify Doge Enrico Dandolo for the title of merchant king, it’s unattainable. In the proud spirit of Venician history, the Miami krewe Scar-Crowned pilfered this history from a rival krewe, added it to their death cult, and called it dope.
    Effect
    • For Social rolls, the equipment bonus of Cash is +2 higher.
    Possible Sources
    • Regalia Ceremony
    Resolution
    • Act in opposition to a Krewe Doctrine, Virtue, or Creed. Gain the Guilty Condition.
    • The character declares something they want up to an Availability of 5. Within a number of days equal to the item’s Availability, the item will arrive into the character’s ownership, though not always favorably.
    • Resolving this Condition grants a Krewe Beat.

    Marianne the Loyal
Marianne has always been a proud French symbol of liberty, and the Flambeau de la Liberté look who bears the name well. Marianne Cohn is a fond example for them, smuggling Jewish children out of France during the Nazi occupation, and for that she is a worthy psychopomp.
    Effect
    • The character gains a +2 to relating to hiding and misdirecting anyone away from information, item, or person they possess or are escorting.
    Possible Sources
    • Regalia Ceremony
    Resolution
    • Act in opposition to a Krewe Doctrine, Virtue, or Creed. Gain the Guilty Condition.
    • The character may allow the recipient of anything delivered to them to feel the emotion the sender wished for them to feel upon reception, imparting a Condition that reflects the emotion.
    • Resolving this Condition grants a Krewe Beat.

    Algorithm the Elect
There are numerous systems that calculate what you Netflix and expire with, and professionals are always talking about how each algorithm works. The krewe #futuretodaygames go beyond the imitators, seeking The Algorithm to assign importance to products they use to build better afterlives.
    Effect
    • The character may treat her Allies, Mentor, and Status as two dots higher for the purposes of favors.
    Possible Sources
    • Regalia Ceremony
    Resolution
    • Act in opposition to a Krewe Doctrine, Virtue, or Creed. Gain the Guilty Condition.
    • The character may roll her Krewe’s Congregation + the highest of her Allies, Mentor, or Status, designating an idea, brand, or product when she does. Whatever she designates becomes popular within a number of miles of her equal to her successes.
    • Resolving this Condition grants a Krewe Beat.

SO in designing Regalia, I wanted to really dig into the weird ideas of what is actually sacred to people, what they might take to the grave and have chopped up into pieces of the afterlife with them. I broadly started with the idea that major icons would be drawn from Mythology(including Folklore, Urban Legends, Fairy Tales, etc.), History, Pop-Culture, Living World Figures, and Weirdness(because the psychospiritual mantles that krewe-mates can wear should always become odd at some point). The Living World was quickly nixed in my case because as a professional we need to be mindful of how representation matters to individuals, and since I was rooting Pop-Culture in references to Chronicles media(Barring Akiko, who was originally the protagonist of a magical girl series, but whatever), that ended up with two of my five categories being oblique references to various other books, but nothing says that you, as a possible homebrewer, are so limited: I had one idea of doing RIchard Dawkins as both the Marvelist and the Racist(alas, I never got around to writing up Antagonist Regalia as spare additional content), as an example.

I regarded Regalia as being to Sin-Eaters what Deathmasks were to Reapers, as well as a venue to explore the fact how most people's iconography for what they value, what they really worship, is wild and weird and personal but always possibly transcendent. That's why things like comic book characters(Constance Lions/Veiled Guardian from the Cabal was an early pitch) and the Cassini Probe were in the original script-because it's those sort of things that I saw remaining as the outside fetish of faith I could see lasting when confronted with the Underworld. The world and the people in it are, again, large and wild and weird, and I wanted the oddness and vitality of the worship of and in the living world to contrast the assumption of the mantles provided to Reapers in their worship of the Cthonic Gods and fundamentally fatalistic nihilism.

I've also long regarded Regalia, incorrectly I admit (given their limited quantities), as the functional "sub-y splat" in that while the y-splat of other splats might describe what you do, your societal role as it were, Krewes reserved that sort of role for Regalia, that the wearing of Regalia says what you do in the Krewe. For Example, I started off with the Furies by saying there was a need for one person to act as a Judge, another as a Jury, and another as an Executioner. Despite some of the errors in my thinking, I think it's still a handy way of thinking about the main spiritual figures of a Krewe.

Soooooo yeah. Hope you enjoy the rough material and a little of the way I spent thinking about it. Who knows how much of it will be useful going forward.

Were there any Haunts that didn't making the cut? or is that of stuff reserved for showing up in a later book?

I wasn't in charge of Haunts, and in fact the draft for that never got across my board-and even if it did, I'm not sharing things from other authors. You'd have to ask Vera.

I don't, namely because I cut the Regalia I did because a lot of my Ceremonies were big word count things that I couldn't chop out.

Later on in the week though, I might talk Ceremony design philosophy as I approached it, and toss a few examples.

I would definitely be excited to see this. Ceremonies are one of my favorite things to come out of Geist 2e and I would love to make some of my own, but I'm not confident in my ability to balance them.

*Side-eyes Rockin' Angra Mainyu's Jacket, where in you could change the wording of Old Laws*

Balance will definitely be an interesting discussion.
