  • VALKARIE and Vampires, an alternative take.

    Back in the Cold War America had a problem: Russia.

    Task Force: VALKARIE believed this problem was worse than even Senator McCarthy knew. A new political ideology had been spreading through the Witchcraft community since the dawn of the 20th century; while it was distinct from mortal political movements it's tenants were strongly socialist. The Witches had gone red.

    The political climate elevated what should have been merely a "cause for concern" into true terror. At the time you were not considered unreasonable if you believed that a network of magical bridges would be bringing the Russian invasion onto American soil any day now.

    VALKARIE had relatively little experience in fighting Witches and in their desperation they made a decision that still shadows them to this day. They turned to form an alliance with a group who had both the supernatural power and the organisation to oppose the witches. They turned to the Vampires.

    In exchange for turning upon the Witches Task Force: Valkyrie provided the Vampires with access to training, weaponry and government clout to veto investigations into up any unfortunate "accidents".

    It worked, but when you ride a tiger the hardest thing to do is to get off. VALKYRIE covered up some terrible crimes, and to keep those crimes in the dark they perform more cover ups that must be kept in the dark.

    The Vampires are also riding a tiger. A whole generation climbed to power on VALKYRIE backing. They got in too close, now VALKARIE knows who's in charge, where the money comes from. They don't know everything but enough to hurt all the major players quite badly. So the Vampire's play nice, they cooperate with VALKYRIE's Masqurade, and every now and again they mention that they know of VALKYRIE's crimes.

    They're in too deep. Each party could do tremendous damage to the other, so the cooperate and sink deeper still.

    It's not a stable situation. Sooner or latter some pretty blond blue eyed pre-teen Ghoul is going to escape and bring correspondence between her abductor and VALKYRIE onto prime time television. Some VALKYRIE general is going to grow a conscience and decide to cut out the infection before pleading guilty to all charges. Some vampire is going to go to far, make a play against the government and refuse to back down. Every day VALKYRIE covers up it's past just makes the inevitable ending even worse.

    =======================

    So this is inspired by the relationship between America and Afghanistan. TF:V is naturally enough, America, while the Vampires are the Taliban. A group who's ideals are opposed to America, but who America supported in their rise to power as a proxy play against the Russians.

    I don't think there is a direct parallel for TF:V's present situation but it's designed to set up an event like 9/11. Something that could radically change the political landmap. Afterwords VALKYRIE could easily surge in and win the "war" against vampires but leaving behind a mess like post-war Afghanistan on American Soil.

    This I think is a far more fitting dark secret for an organisation based on the American military/intelligence community. Monsters didn't outplay them and take over, they created their own monsters through dark deals, cold war paranoia and arrogance.

    I really like it. Any thoughts on how much impact this scenario has on the Free Council?

      My hope would be that this scenario fits nicely into the existing back-story of the Free Council. Maybe it teaches them the value in keeping their head down and so serves as a catalyst for them transforming from firebrand revolutionaries to the respected member of the Pentacle they are today.

      However my knowledge of Mage just isn't good enough to say if that fits the existing material.

      Thinking about it. I should replace the explicit reference to the Free Council with something more generic. That way people are free to use the Council if they want but they don't have to contradict the text if they'd rather keep the Free Council out of their hunter game or Hunters and Vampires away from their Free Council.
