  • Getting rid of a friendly ghost!

So my characters accidentally managed to summon up a ghost that doesn't want to remain. She's gotten fettered to one of the characters through some unfortunate events. How would one go about sending it back to whence it came, sorta thing? Is exorcism the only way out?

Well, there's the traditional "unfinished business" route where you help the ghost figure out what it is that it didn't resolve in life and finish that to help it. There's the idea that the ghost needs a guide to find a way to the light, and somehow sees your character as the way to do it, or that the ghost is somehow barred before it can move on. It could be the spirit needs to be cleansed/purified, as exorcism is to ghosts what a shotgun is at close range to a human body.

Or you could do Research on it, and find out his Bane, to destroy it, once for all. Rules on those are in CoD Rulebook, page 139.

In addition to exorcism. If it's Fetter, the ghost can use Unfetter. Otherwise you can use Abjuration to nullify the Anchor prereq, which would eventually have the ghost spiraling down into the Underworld. Abjuration is not quite exorcism.

This seems accurate, page 140 Chronicles of Darkness, though if the ghost was summoned from the Underworld it's hard to picture it actually wanting to go back, even if the ghost is nice, I can picture some rather pitiful pleading and wretched begging for the mercy of not being sent back to the dark cold pit filled with less pleasant restless spirits in the Chronicles of Darkness's canonical afterlife.

Bonus points for becoming the Ghost's Bane during an exceptional success on Abjuration and then using your blood to form a Warding/Binding.
