  • [New Legacy] Phagocytes

    Note: The format for this Legacy is borrowed from proindrakenzol.

    The world is alive, and very sick. The restless dead abound everywhere, haunting the living like parasites. Not only that, strange afflictions often fester in haunted areas and people, as the entropic touch of the dead spreads all sorts of plagues. This results in a vicious cycle where unhealthy souls and bodies feed into each other, leaving both worlds corrupted and foul. The Phagocytes are the immune response to this malady. Their mission is two-fold: firstly, they purge the rotting influence of the dead on the living by excising unwelcome Resonances and similar phenomena. Secondly, they keep the living healthy in body and soul to excise the symptomatic manifestations of the restless dead in the first place. By doing this, the Phagocytes combat the roots of many evils and create a healthier, saner world.

    Origins
    Parentage: Thyrsus, Adamantine Arrow
    Nicknames: Rot Eaters
    Background: Healers with a morbid edge and an interest in unorthodox methods of curing the body and soul.
    Appearances: Phagocytes generally dress in a professional and pleasing manner. Their Legacy Attainments and overall magical talent allows them to maintain a rigorous hygiene despite their gruesome modus operandi. Their Nimbuses also manifest vermin, corpse gases and bony protrusions.

    Doctrine
    Prerequisites: Death 2, Medicine 2, Occult 2, and a Specialty for Thanatology or other appropriate field.
    Initiation: One must be infected with a horrible disease, and survive it while documenting the entire process. You are accepted into their ranks if your thesis is considered to have yielded useful information that could only have been gained by experiencing all the pus and blood. Those who balk at potentially dying do not deserve to master Death.

    Organization: Phagocytes gather into loose quarantine units focused on clusters of especially nasty plagues, often subdividing based on their areas of medical expertise. Newer members are assigned to less dangerous outbreaks, while the veteran get to select teams for the more serious cases. Experience and overall rank in this Legacy are measured not just by sheer amount of reactive treatments, but also by active research performed on bio-pneumal afflictions and thanatology. The highest ranking Phagocytes are morbid savants who often develop unusual traits for their bodies and souls. This Legacy is considered Left-Handed in a fair number of Consilia because its members have been known to use its Attainments in pursuit of Lichdom.

    Magic
    Ruling Arcanum: Death
    Yantras: Medical equipment, including vaccines and other inoculations (+1), necrotic tissue (+1), ectoplasmic residue (+2), graveyards and other frequently haunted locations (+2)
    Oblations: infecting oneself with and studying diseases, observing and assisting in exorcisms, exploring the Underworld

    Attainments
    First: Bio-Pneumal Diagnosis
    Prerequisite: Initiation
    The Phagocyte must identify the root cause of the malady she wishes to cure before anything else. This Attainment works like Soul Marks, with Reach assigned to Instant Casting.
    Optional: Life 1
    It's no use knowing how to cut out a tumor if the cancer still exists. This Attainment works like Analyze Life, with Reach assigned to Instant Casting.

    Second: Immunization
    Prerequisite: Death 2, either Medicine 3 or Occult 3
    The Phagocyte must protect herself from the infection methods of the restless dead. This Attainment works like Ghost Shield, which is cast as a Ritual and with Reach assigned to Advanced Duration.
    Optional: Life 2
    The Phagocyte is not under risk of death from illness even when performing the most dangerous experiments. This Attainment works like Purge Illness, with Reach assigned to Instant Casting.

    Third: Devour Impurity
    Prerequisite: Death 3, both Medicine 3 and Occult 3
    The Phagocyte feeds on ghostly incursions to power her own magic. Her senses are attuned to a Death version of Shadow Sickness (see Book Of Spirits, page 79) that happens as a result of ghostly haunting. She can absorb such maladies through touch and roll Stamina + Resolve + Death to resist them. For every 2 Toxicity she suffers, she gains a +1 Yantra on any Death spell (maximum +5). Upon absorbing such ailments into herself, the source is suppressed for Death dots in days. During this period, the Ghostly Sickness will not infect anyone and is thus easier to study.
    Optional: Life 3
    The Phagocyte likewise feeds on earthly maladies, rolling Stamina + Resolve + Life to resist them. For every 2 Toxicity she suffers, she gains a +1 Yantra on any Life spell (maximum +5). Furthermore, her body becomes a potent source of antibodies: whenever she purges an illness from her system, she may roll Gnosis + Life. Each Success grants 1 unit of anti-bodies, which can be administered to a living subject with a mundane Intelligence + Medicine roll. This reduces the effective Toxicity of the associated disease by the Phagocyte's Life dots, down to a minimum of 1.

    Fourth: Quarantine Outbreak
    Prerequisite: Death 4, either Medicine 4 or Occult 4
    Phagocytes know that ghosts can be driven to stay in this world and haunt the living indefinitely, and so must often act with a strong hand. This Attainment works like Command Ghost, with Reach assigned to Instant Casting, Advanced Duration and Advanced Scale (Subjects).
    Optional: Life 4
    The living themselves are often unaware of their status as vectors for diseases until it is too late. Phagocytes learn how to steer their behavior to minimize risk of contagion. This Attainment works like Lure And Repel, with Reach assigned to Instant Casting, Advanced Duration and Advanced Scale (Subjects).

    Fifth: Thanato-Genetics
    Prerequisite: Death 5, both Medicine 4 and Occult 4
    The Phagocyte may create her own Ghostly Sickness. This is considered a Death Making spell analogous to Life's Contagion, which is cast as a Ritual and with Reach assigned to Advanced Duration. Phagocytes often design Ghostly Sicknesses to affect themselves and gain Arcane Beats, which are then used to buy unique Merits.
    Optional: Life 5
    The Phagocytes who reach the pinnacle of their Legacy discover how to manipulate the blueprints of living beings. This Attainment works like Transform Life, which is cast as a Ritual and with Reach assigned to Advanced Duration and passing the traits to descendants. By performing experiments that combine the Ghostly Sickness with genetically-engineered life forms, the Phagocyte may create true wonders and horrors in the name of science.

    Pretty cool, I like that you changed up the second and third attainments a bit from when I saw the original. It makes them actually better healers, but has a good benefit for them as well. The latter attainments take their knowledge to sort of selfish ends I think, but I don't hold it against them.

      Optional: Life 1
      It's no use knowing how to cut out a tumor if the cancer still exists. This Attainment works like Analyze Life, with Reach assigned to Instant Casting. It also gives the Informed Condition (Subject's Biology) with 1 Mana. This counts for microorganisms as well.
      Granting a positive condition out of whole cloth is outside the capabilities of a 1-dot effect, even if you spend a point of mana.

      Second: Immunization
      Prerequisite: Death 2, either Medicine 3 or Occult 3
      The Phagocyte must protect herself from the infection methods of the restless dead. This Attainment works like Ghost Shield, which is cast as a Ritual and with Reach assigned to Advanced Duration. Clashes of Wills involving this Attainment achieve automatic Successes equal to Death dots.
      Clash of Wills rolls do not get automatic successes for being attainments, they are rolled as normal: source. Do keep in mind that CoW rolls do benefit from extended duration (+1 to +4) and advanced reach (+1) [M:tAw2e pg 118].

      Optional: Life 2
      The Phagocyte must get used to the feeling of disease ravaging her body, for this process is a valuable source of knowledge. This Attainment works like a Life Compelling effect that urges all microorganisms within the targeted area to quickly move in the same direction. This can transfer diseases from current hosts to the Phagocyte or a suitable container in her possession. Reach is assigned to Instant Casting and Advanced Scale (Area).
      This doesn't really make sense.

      1) Microorganisms don't "quickly move."
      2) How does this transfer diseases? The microorganisms have no way of escaping whatever they're in, and even if they did they can't move outside a host.
      3) If you removed all microorganisms from an animal, that animal would die.

      I'd just make the ability Purge Illness with instant casting.

      I would remove the "ignoring Gnosis-derived limits on Yantras" bit. That limit is only on the number that can be incorporated, not the dice bonus, and gaining access to a +5 yantra is a huge boon.

      It also seems a bit clunky, but I'm not really sure how to pare it down because I'm not familiar with Shadow Sickness.

        Really love the concept of the Legacy, i don't have any mechanics commentary as i'm not that familiar with Legacy just yet, but this is some good stuff !
