    Commanders of Ephemera

The Commanders of Ephemera are actually three closely related legacies, each one dealing with a specific ephemeral entity: spirits, goetia, and ghosts.
Most Commanders of Ephemera focus on spirits or ghosts, as those are the most plentiful ephemeral entities found “in the wild”; and for most of history the existence of Commanders of Ephemera focusing on goetia was mostly a hypothetical or a joke, but with Mages living in locations like Los Angeles and other cities where goetia do more regularly manifest Commanders of Ephemera focusing on goetic entities have sprung up.
The Commanders of Ephemera also have many regional permutations, the legacies are an amalgam of similar traditions from all over the world rather who originally banded together for political clout within Consilia and Convocations.
Commanders of Ephemera occasionally come into conflict with Werewolves, who view the Binders as poachers, or Sin-Eaters, who view the Binders as slavers.
Below are the most common attainments learned by members of the legacies.

    Origins
    Parentage:
    Obrimos, Silver Ladder or Mysterium
Nicknames: Binders, ephemerists, gym leaders (by Libertines).
Background: occultists, spiritualists, ghost hunters, clergy.
Appearances: Religious garb is common, as are symbols or clothes that evoke rulership or leadership.

    Doctrine
    Prerequisites:
Spirit/Death/Mind 2, a Familiar of the type appropriate to the chosen Arcanum, Occult 2, and one of the following skills at 2 dots or higher: Empathy, Persuasion, Politics, Intimidation, or Expression.
Initiation: Initiates must prove they are capable of controlling the appropriate ephemeral entity and making it submit to their will: some masters are fine with a pupil “taming” a placid entity, where others demand the pupil and the pupil’s familiar(s) dominate the entity by force.
Organization: The Legacy is primarily a master/student relationship, though members of one “branch” will recommend prospective candidates for another.
Theory: The ephemeral realms are always beside us, replete with Mystery and capable entities, those entities should be harnessed for the good of humanity and we, with our connection to Truth, are the best equipped to do so.

    Magic
    Ruling Arcanum:
    Spirit or Death or Mind
Yantras: religious symbols or symbols of leadership (+1), salt (+1), incense filled room (+2), chanting a prayer or issuing commands (+2, cannot be used reflexively).
Oblations: ritual purification of oneself or a site, leading a meeting or holding court.

    Attainments
    First: The Invisible Revealed
    Prerequisite: Initiation
The Binder can always sense the entities of their focus, this Attainment acts as Exorcist’s Eye with reach spent on Advanced Duration, but is keyed to only entities of the appropriate type for the Ruling Arcanum gained from the Legacy.
    Optional: Prime 1
The Binder always knows the direction and distance to the nearest source of Essence appropriate to the type of entity on which they focus as well as the resonance of that Essence. By concentrating for a turn the Binder can tune to a specific resonance rather than just looking for Essence in general.

    Second: Divine Protection
    Prerequisite: Spirit/Death/Mind 2, Occult 3
The powers of ephemeral entities are often dangerous, this Attainment wards the Binder from the powers of the ephemeral entities they are most likely to encounter. This Attainment acts as Mental Shield, Ghost Shield, or Ephemeral Shield as appropriate with reach assigned to Advanced Duration. This attainment also affects a number of the Binder’s familiars equal to half their dots in Spirit/Death/Mind (rounded down).
    Optional: Prime 2
The resilience of a Binder’s shield against their brand of ephemeral target is unparalleled. Even should the initial Clash go in the attacking entity’s favor the Binder can activate Prime Mage Armor against a damaging attack without having to spend a point of Mana or can attempt a second Clash of Wills on their next turn if the spell has an ongoing effect.

    Third: Flesh over Ephemera
    Prerequisite: Spirit/Death/Mind 3, Occult 3, a Rank 2 familiar
The Binder can equip their ephemeral entities with tools capable of affecting those not in Twilight or make it so their own tools work on entities in Twilight. With a scene long ritual the Binder attunes an item to the frequency of Twilight for the appropriate ephemeral entity for a duration equal to their dots in Spirit/Death/Mind on the Advanced Duration chart; when the item is corporeal it fully affects Twilight entities of the appropriate type, when in Twilight it can be used on corporeal objects and people. Items enhanced via this Attainment that are in Twilight can be seen by those without the ability to see ephemeral entities with a Wits + Composure - the Binder’s Spirit/Death/Mind. Items under the effects of this Attainment do not lose their material form when taken into Twilight, the Shadow, the Underworld, or the Astral (as appropriate).
    Optional: Prime 3
Items altered by the primary Attainment work on all ephemeral entities, rather than just those of the appropriate type.

    Fourth: As I Will
Prerequisite: Spirit/Death/Mind 4. In addition to the Occult 3 requirement from the previous Attainment, the Exorcist must increase the other Skill used to meet the prerequisites of the Legacy to 3, or must attain 2 dots in a second skill from the list of possible requirements.
The Binder speaks and ephemeral entities obey. This Attainment acts as Command Spirit/Ghost/Goetia with reach assigned to Instant cast, Advanced Duration, and Sensory Range and potency equal to Spirit/Death/Mind.
    Optional: Prime 4
A Binder at this level can use their familiar as a potent magical item. A Binder can spend a scene to bind a spell to their familiar as if creating an Imbue Item (removing or swapping the Imbued spell likewise requires a scene). The Imbued spell does not take up the Binder’s spell control, and the familiar can hold a number of spells equal to the Binder’s Prime dots via this attainment; if the Binder has more than one familiar than the total number of spells across all familiars is limited by the Binder’s Prime dots. The familiar is not limited to having only one Contingent spell imbued.

    Fifth: Ephemeral Master
    Prerequisite: Spirit/Death/Mind 5, Occult 4.
The Binder’s familiar becomes Rank 3 but still retains the familiar manifestation; if a Binder has more than one familiar then only one becomes Rank 3 immediately, but the Binder can have a number of Rank 3 familiars equal to their dots in Spirit/Death/Mind. Additionally, the Binder can spend a point of Mana to gain dots in Status towards ephemeral entities of the appropriate type for a scene equal to their dots in Spirit/Death/Mind; if a powerful (rank 4+) entity already holds sway over the area then this Attainment can be contested with a Clash of Wills.
    Optional: Prime 5
Should the Binder so desire, the entire area loses its distinction between physical and Twilight, everything is treated as fully solid. This Attainment mimics the effects of the spell Ephemeral Enchantment with Instant cast, Advanced Duration, and Advanced Scale: Area.

My only complaint is that fluff-wise they’re rather generic compared to other Legacies like the Clavicularius. But the attainments are solidly written. I approve.

Of course, the logical conclusion of having variations for different flavors of ephemera would be a Fate-primary version that goes after angels 😛 (the attainments would require conjunctional Prime).

The longer I study science the more I am convinced that it is functionally indistinguishable from what our ancestors would refer to as sorcery. And I would know, being both scientist and sorcerer.

Yeah, unfortunately really nailing down a solid flavor on something spanning three potential primary Arcana (or more!) is a bit difficult.

The only issue there is you can't force G-M "angels" to go against the G-M, but if there were a location with a high density of G-M "angels" then such a branch might develop like the Commanders of Goetia developed in places like Los Angeles.

Speaking of solid flavor, I think you should take the monicker of "Gym Leaders" and just run with it. Commanders would take ephemerals under their wing, developing a mutually challenging relationship. They would train their wards, but also train themselves to remain worthy of loyalty. This could take the form of a journey or intensive training in a fighting dojo. It would be a very Adamantine Arrow philosophy. You could crib liberally from Pokemon, with the added benefit of exploring aspects that the franchise glosses over. For instance, are you truly the best, if only your wards improve? How do their particular needs alter the trajectory of development for a trainer? Do Commanders that stay in the back, shouting orders, breed resentment in their 'Mons? You can deconstruct and reconstruct beloved games and cartoons, so there's real heft to than concept.

Heheh, Gym Leaders — gotta agree with Teatime above on that one.

We could even do TMs and HMs via spells that copy and transfer Numina.

I like this. I like this a lot. Especially since it carries a risk of accidentally creating a Magath, or an outright Ghost/Spirit/Angel/Goetia hybrid.

Wouldn't a Rank 3 ghost familiar already be a Geist ? In such a case, wouldn't there be an ever present risk of them terminating the familiar bond in favor of striking the Bargain ? Because at the end of the day, ghosts have a strong fixation with whatever business they had with the living and a Bound might let them experience it again.

New experiences are the font of creativity, when seeking inspiration, break your routine.

The Agathos Kai Sophos, an Acanthus Legacy of strategists (Mind/Time)

I’d say that external sources of power, Supernal or otherwise, can exalt a ghost to Rank 3+ without the transformation into a Geist/Reaper.
