  • My understanding is that its all a matter of catering to different niches. Spirit 1 can probably get you an exceptional success, but you still need one success for it to work. Plus its restricted to using tools only.

Exceptional Luck can guarantee success in most mundane tasks by granting boon Conditions. But it can also add a dice bonus to spellcasting for extra Reach. Its not bound to tools, so its a harder Practice, but more flexible.

If I read Miracle correctly, its big selling point is that it can be used on absolutely anything. Casting a mana consuming spell ? Cast Miracle before to get an exceptional success and you can get your mana back plus a bonus point or you can bypass Withstand or even get an extra Reach. Scrutinizing a Mystery with Mage Sight ? Miracle can help. Your Obrimos cabal mate is dreading using up a lot of mana to make a Hallow ? Miracle can fix that. Miracle uses up no mana to give you all that, which is huge.

    • Idk, still seems a bit much for one dot, but ehh, whatever.

Coming to think of it, it's not a fair comparison at all... your spell just gives the "side effects" of an exceptional success, as opposed to actual successes.

Perhaps add a note that conditions gained from exceptional successes that result from this spell don't grant beats unless the spell itself was an exceptional success?

Next question: how much forces would you need to allow you to lift objects that normally wouldn't be able to lift without them breaking under their own weight, or simply because you don't have the leverage, and how would you write it out?

      Comment

      • Its just a normal XP beat, mages care more about Arcane Beats. You get one per scene this way. Anything beyond that is due to exceptional roleplaying or story milestones. And like you said, you might need to use Willpower, spells or any other means in case its a skill where your dice pool is not great. So long as you stick to that 1 beat sanity check, everything else is just for narrative effect, which I say is fair enough.

Regarding Forces, the elegant and precise solution is Telekinesis at Forces 3. But maybe you can use a Control Gravity from Forces 2 to make the center of gravity an object falls towards be your destination point. Problem is that the object is falling towards that point, so fragile ones would be at risk. In addition, if the point is too far away, inertia will make the object overshoot the goal, effectively colliding it at high speed against whatever is nearby.

        • What arcana would be needed to absorb the contents of a book directly into your mind?

Mind arcana technically lists language and communication under its purview, but everything you read on it implies that this only applies to working with actual minds, rather than anything in the physical world.

Probably just a Matter 1 Knowing spell to know the contents. If you flipped through the book physically you could use Mind 1's Perfect Recall, which explicitly mentions "words written on a piece of paper" as one of the things you can recall, if you wanted to peruse the book later.

            • Flipping through the book and using Perfect Recall does have some drawbacks. First off it takes a significantly longer amount of time than casting a non-ritual spell since you need to get a good view on each page (but certainly a lot shorter than actually reading the book). Secondly, it's more akin to storing the book in your mind rather than absorbing the contents of it. You need to cast the spell and "reread" the book in your memories to access the information rather than just storing it. It being a purely mental process should speed it up, and with One Mind, Two Thoughts it wouldn't even take time away from other activities.

A spell that actually transfers the information would be Matter for the physical medium, and possibly Mind because of the type of information you're getting information from (language and communication in the form of the written word). I can see arguments both for and against Mind and I'm undecided about whether it's necessary or not.

If it's only Matter Knowing I'd give the player some cursory information about the book, and with a Reach or two (maybe even a Mana) grant a simplified version of the contents; Matter is not for this kind of communication and Knowing doesn't usually grant that much information.

If it's a Matter/Mind Knowing spell I'd grant a number of facts or pages of transferred infromation based on Potency and information density. Two Reaches and a Mana might grant the entire book directly.

              • A book is obviously a form of communication and a representation of language. The material aspects of a book's symbolism isn't what you want to interact with for this spell, anyway. Mind can do that without help. Seems it would be a straight Knowing effect.

Matter is the one that is arguable. Solids and shaping are the only purviews that apply to a book. Knowing the meaning of squiggles, lines, and whatnot is language and that is not on it's list. (Spirit would be an easier sell since a book's spirit involves communication.)

Reading a book without needing to open it is certainly a Matter Knowing effect.

I lean towards a Reach option to divide time required to read it by Potency and another that requires Mind 1 which renders absorption instantaneous. Could apply these to Discern Composition if you'd like to use an existing rote.

Ed: In hindsight, pure Matter should simply speed up reading by removing the material constraints, so something like multiplying the reading rate by around a flat 3x seems better than a Potency based multiplier. All books affected, though, would be accessible from anywhere, so casting over a library would make everything within available on a whim. That's pretty darn cool. Research would be similarly multiplied by not needing to move to look at another book and would this would render such an action entirely mental if all the materials in question were present. That's still a mighty nifty effect to have handy.

                  Withstand: Composure
Suggested Rote Skills: Expression, Intimidation, Persuasion

The mage compels a sleeping target to begin dreaming, and do so in a vivid and psychologically compelling fashion. The caster does not dictate or even influence the content of the dream, he merely causes them to have one. To do this, she should cast Dream Reaching (Mage: the Awakening, p. 160); otherwise the Storyteller controls the nature and subject matter of the dream.

In the state of this intense dream, the subject may experience Breaking Points and collect Beats as though they were awake. The entirety of the dream counts as one scene.

+1 Reach: The dream is extended in the subject's mind. It lasts for an additional scene. Each additional scene requires the use of another Reach.

                    Withstand: N/A
Suggested Rote Skills: Craft, Expression, Academics

This extracts the taste or smell of an object into up to [Potency] small spherical objects around the size of a marble. The ones containing smells are meant to be popped and release a foul flavor when eaten. Those containing flavors are meant to be eaten and release foul odors when popped. Seers and hubristic Ladders are very fond of them, offering them to visitors. Those without the means to know which kind they were given often need to ask the mage or risk embarrassment, feeding the caster's ego. More artistically inclined mages are also likely to use them, a musician may provide special scents or tastes to complement a symphony or chef may use them in molecular gastronomy. Its rumored some casters even create stink bombs or a cheap approximation of tear gas (using onions and the like).

+1 Reach: Potency can instead be allocated at a one to one ratio to increase the number of flavors/smells the touch stone contains.

Thanks, it was inspired by the ones Jerec used in the SW: Dark Forces. But now that you mention it, yeah, I can see it as well. Not sure if the 1 Reach effect should remain so or just be the result of increasing the Scale.

A savvy théarch knows that the first step to climb the ladder of existence is to know how to use their time wisely. This grants the Good Time Management merit and allows anyone affected to use it in teamwork mundane actions with anyone else who also possesses the merit.

+1 Reach: A unifying vision drives creativity and efficiency further up, granting [Potency] dots of the Vision merit. For an extra Reach and a mana, it can exceed 5 points.

+1 Reach: Also grants the targets the ability to purchase the Good Time Management and/or Vision merits.

Being able to keep a centered mind amidst chaos is invaluable to an Arrow, using magic to aid the process even more so. This grants [Potency] points in Meditative Mind, or extra points in case the target already has it, up to a limit of four points.

+1 Reach: A warrior may be called to duty in the Astral. In such cases, being able to forego the need of Hallows reduces vulnerabilies. This grants the Astral Adept merit.

+1 Reach: Also allows the purchase of the Astral Adept merit, provided the target is an Awakened or Sleepwalker.

Sometimes a mage doesn't have time to pour through pages upon pages of arcane lore to find the tidbit they're looking for. This spell allows the mage to sift through the contents of text much like a document viewing program can search for specific words or phrases in a document. For each level of potency the mage can ask a question regarding the contents of a book, scroll, manuscript or any other similar object of text and absorb relevant passages and where in the text it is located directly into their mind as if having freshly read them. If a mage targets multiple texts with this spell they are aware of which text the passage belongs to.

+1 Reach: The mage may simply absorb the full contents of the target(s) into their mind as if having freshly read it in its entirety from beginning to end.

                              ----------

This is my first time making a Rote based off of the question I asked previously regarding absorbing the contents of a book directly into the mind. It was inspired while reading Broken Diamond by DaveB, when he had pondered on the very topic of such a spell and what arcana that would require. It captured my own imagination and had me thinking on it for a good while before posting here to confirm if Mind would simply be sufficient thanks to its dominion over language and communications.

This spell assumes that the Mind Arcana does not simply limit itself to the confines of the human mind, but stretches out to envelop the construct of language and communication that humanity has collectively built and passed down over thousands of years by taking sounds, symbols and ideas and forming sympathetic connections from them to people, objects, places, and abstract concepts.

Let me know if or where I went astray on this one.

Edit: Included information in the case of targeting multiple texts. Tidied up the wording.

Tapping into the temporal patterns of the world, the mage alters the current season. When cast on an area, the targeted location's climate changes to match the desired season; the mage might create a spring garden in the middle of winter, or call on the monsoons of the rainy season during a period of aridity. When cast on an individual, the target behaves as if the desired season were in effect; a plant might reach its peak height in summer, for example, or a metal lamp-post in winter might turn cold and develop a veneer of ice. On human targets, this spell allows the individual to reduce the severity of Environmental Tilts caused by the weather by the spell's Potency.

+1 Reach: The mage can apply an Environmental Tilt to the affected area relevant to the desired season, with an effective strength equal to the spell's Potency. If cast on an individual, the target suffers from the Environmental Tilt as if it were a Personal Tilt, and the spell is Withstood with Stamina.

Add Space ••••: The mage can change the season to one not normally experienced in the target location (such as monsoon season in Alaska).
