  • Sample Mysteries

"Any magical puzzle, any lingering spell, any otherworldly
enigma is potentially a Mystery. The Storyteller decides on the
particulars of the Mystery, which break down into three parts:
Opacity, surface information, and deep information." (p. 93)

I'm starting a new game, but need clarity on coming up with specific Mysteries. Every Order has some samples, but they're very open-ended. For Storytellers and Players alike, what Mysteries are you planning to insert in your game?

I like the idea of staring with everyday mysteries and then extrapolating them in to something crazy.

Why do your socks keep disappearing in the laundry?

Because a spirit of socks is trying to build itself up to a spirit of cloth. Or maybe your washing machine occasionally opens a micro portal in to an unknown realm devoid of socks.

You can start with a haunted house story and make it either classic (haunted by a ghost) or non classic (someting weirder)

An old leather journal with various correct and incorrect physics equations; for each equation read, the laws of physics around the character changes to the incorrect one while somewhere an Annunaki grows stronger and closer to the Fallen World. (Currently two of the characters have, after rolling a d10 for severity, "Ice is more dense than water" and "metal does not conduct electricity, but glass does", on things roughly within an arm's reach of them).

(In an alternate-timeline New York City) A massive tower is being built on the grounds of the former World Trade Center, and an architect PC working for one of the firms building it has discovered it contains arcane patterns and geometries. Patterns that, thus far, when transcribed onto paper and connected in any meaningful way brand their skin with tattoos.

An "amethyst" geode found within the abandoned under-infrastructural (lower case i) that a player has grown unreasonable attached to. . and when he turned into a Beast, it shunted into his Lair and turned into a multi-faceted Obelisk, showing brief visions of terrible things on every flat surface.

None of these have been in a Mage game yet, and all have occurred in a Mortal game (except for the last half of that last one), but as the campaigns are all connected, my Beast game will be running into my Mage game and they will all be relevant.

A mage who may have ventured too far seeks to answer a single question, can a creature like a werewolf be replicated? A werewolf is said to be a physical being with a soul of spirit so what if two claimed bred? Could their offspring potentially be like the wolves? Even if they are not a stable lineage could another breed be born? (Mystery driving an antagonistic mage in a mage x werewolf game.)

It has come to the attention of some mages that there are mortals going about their daily lives without souls. These soulless mortals are not feeling the negative effects of their condition, why? Have the seers gone about removing souls to prevent awakenings they have foresaw at the orders of their masters or is it something else, something worse? ( Could be anything from the god machine, magic or even the fey)

I've posted this a few times, but the gist of the Mystery is that the Nimbuses of dead mages flare up around freshly Awakened apprentices and long-lost Legacies seem to spontaneously appear. These effects on the Awakened are relatively subtle, but many local Sleepers suffer much worse; fugue states, extended periods of missing time, and psychotic breaks where they act in archaic manners or babble in tongues. Something in this city is causing the past to return piecemeal, and whether it's the memories of past lives becoming oddly apparent or a compete breakdown of Death and Time, none can say.

•Children are vanishing. At first, their guardians claim that they've gone to camp for the week. Soon, they forget they had kids at all. And that's when the post cards begging for help (and which Sleepers cannot see) start coming in...

•Authors and writers in the surrounding area are having moments of sudden inspiration which compel them to write gripping dramas of all genres like a man possessed... and where the individuals and societies are obviously groups and individuals involve in the local supernatural community.

•A strange radio announcer's morning show hops from frequency to frequency, and not only seems to speak directly to the listener, but to offer prophetic threats,

Someone or something has had Temporal Stutter cast on them with an indefinite duration at some point in the distant past. What will the players find if they dispel it?

An aging rock star who happens to be a Sleepwalker with pull in the Consilium believes that the recent deaths of David Bowie and Prince were unnatural, and that he's next.

We don't allow mages to cast spells, since this is the most unbalancing rule of all.

-A spreading computer virus seems to be... adapting to new protection techniques. Further inspections reveal it to be sentient. It's already infected most of the city's computers. What's its goal?

-A new energy drink allows people to be awake 24/7 without any sort of down. It also seems to be highly addictive.

-Sleepers all around the city start to report common dreams. Not just similar ones, common. They had the exact same dream and were both in it.

-A small earthquake tore open a perfectly circular hole which seems to go down for a loooooong time.

-A fireplace in an abandoned house cannot be doused. It always burn brightly and strong. People are starting to venerate the Flames.
